What tips are there for using this forum?

I thought I would start a topic for people to reply adding tips on how to use this forum.

To start the ball rolling I'll add some of my own as a reply :)

I would suggest starting a separate topic if people wish to specifically discuss pros and cons of the particular forum system being used ;-)

Note there is a topic on What topics to read first? which may also be a useful starting point too.

There is also a separate topic on resources and options available for YouView user/customer support which you may also wish to read as this forum is just one place you can go to get help.

When you first enter the forum you will arrive at the main community page. This page defaults to showing the list of all conversations/topics order by recent activity. You can also access the sub-categories of topics from the list on the right.

Note the YouView software runs on several different manufacturer's PVRs (e.g. Humax and Huawei) and there can also be additional service specific software (e.g. BT and TalkTalk). As such if creating a forum topic to ask for help/support it may often be a good idea to also state which box you have and the software version information.

Here are some of my observations/tips on using this forum:
    1. The search box is your friend - It can be very handy to try to find topics that already exist so you do not find yourself duplicating threads or repeating points that have already been well and truly made (although you probably want to +1 it still and potentially follow it too). Having found an existing relevant topic you may of course still have something to add by way of a reply on that topic.
    2. Do +1/me too/vote for topics that you like/are important to you - They will then appear suitably ranked in the various ordered lists which in turn is likely to make it easier for new people to find things that are likely to be most relevant to them too. Greater interest in some topics over others may also help YouView to decide where to focus efforts at any given time. Note the get satisfaction forum system does not have the concept of sticky topics to force some items to the top of lists.
    3. Do use your profile/dashboard to see a list of topics you are following etc - You can find this at the top right of the page by clicking on your name (assuming you have signed in).
    4. When you start a topic think about what category it should go in - Is it a question (e.g. How do I do this?), is it a problem (e.g. This does not work or has stopped working?), is it an idea (e.g. Wouldn't it be good if it could do this or that were improved like this).
    5. Try to keep each topic to a single question/idea/problem so they are easier to track - You can always add a reply to a topic with a link to another one if they are separate but related issues in some way and you wish to draw attention to the link/relationship.
    6. If you see a duplicate topic add a reply with a link to the main topic tracking that issue - This will help to keep things more organised and keep everyone together and on topic.
    7. You cannot edit or delete a topic you start once someone has replied to it - Try to get it right first time, particularly the title. You can of course follow up with replies on a topic you started to add corrections or clarifications.
    8. You cannot edit your replies if someone has subsequently replied or commented on it
    9. Do use the 'like/good point' link to draw attention to particularly useful replies or say thank you for a valuable response
    10. Above all be nice! - Also see the Get Satisfaction Company-Customer Pact, YouView community guidelines and YouView community terms of use.
Note as mentioned at the beginning there is also a separate topic on resources and options available for YouvView user/customer support.

In the absence of a go to new posts function I go to the end of a thread (using the End button on my keyboard) then scroll back up until I see one I have already read then read forward from there. Not infallible due the "sub-threading" feature which means someone may have replied directly to a post way up nearer the top of a thread.

I also click the "Recent Activity" tab on the main community page, and the latest reply is at the top, then I make a mental note of the time when the last reply was made and by whom, then use your method Gomez, of hitting "End" and then scrolling to that persons reply/comment.

This means that if there are a lot of replies, you can hopefully find the latest one!

I like to right click on a topic, read them and comment if necessary then close and right click on the next one.

Well as expected a separate topic now exists discussing the pros and cons of the forum system being used.

Even though this tips topic is explicitly linked from the main overview page (on the right), one comment I've made in the topic mentioned above, but will add here too, is:

Something that would not really be the right solution but could help some people would be if lots of people vote for this tips topic (i.e. +1 it) which as a question would then quite quickly get it to the top of that list on the overview page and hence be a more obvious first read for people and help them use this forum better/more easily.

I have a few questions about the use of the forum on iPhone.

1- When you try to post a reply, you enter your email and password and it displays a page saying they are accepted but nothing else happens. How can I continue to posting the reply?

2- The forum home page does not have a search page. How do you find the thread you are searching for?

3- On the web forum you have replies and comments (under each reply). On the iPhone these are all displayed in a flat form. Why different and how can then one see what comment made to what reply?

    Thanks

Adding comments will also help keep this near the top of the recent activity list

I have just discovered that forum nicknames are not unique, and that more than one person can have the same nickname. This came from finding a reply from "Chris" that I didn't write! (no malice suggested - I am sure the other poster is also "Chris"!).

Fortunately, the Satisfaction software allows your Nickname to be changed, so from now on I will be Chris__M.

I agree with Gomez - this forum needs a 'Go to new post' function. With the increase in numbers on this forum there are going to be a significant increase in threads, replies, sub-threads.
