Consolidated list of bugs and faults

When I originally created the consolidated list of improvements and feature requests topic I specifically stated I did not see that as a topic to track bugs and faults as it is only reasonable to expect all bugs and faults will be given appropriate attention and timely fixes made available (be that as an interim maintenance software update or rolled into the main release cycle depending on whether a regular update is imminent and the severity of the issue to be addressed). Nevertheless as the number of forum post grew there were occasional references made to the value of having a handy consolidated list of bugs and faults beyond simply looking at the list of all problems (a feature of the old forum system and thus no longer available). In a similar fashion to the consolidated list of improvements and feature requests, I created a numbered consolidated list as an easy reference to bugs and faults raised. Over time as bugs/issues are identified and fixed I update this list to reflect the current situation.If you are actually more interested in a chronological changelog then you may be better looking at the consolidated list of updates and changes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Consolidated list of bugs and faults

The list below is largely drawn from the problem topics plus some that are phrased as questions. Note the list primarily includes clear repeatable problems rather than isolated incidents reported by one person.
  1. Regular loss of channels on Humax YouView boxes resulting in failed recordings and requiring repeated retunes {see [1], [2], [3]} Fixed in 21/11/2012 update
  2. Clipped recordings {see [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]}
  3. Incorrect disk full message {see [1]}
  4. YouView system gets slower and then freezes or periodically stalls if constantly on/in low eco mode for a long period of time {see [1]}
  5. Info screen hangs if you press the info button whilst the mini guide is on screen {see [1]}Fixed in 30/10/2012 update
  6. YouView box will not go into standby and remains constantly on and otherwise fully functional {see [1]} Fixed
  7. Volume problems: inconsistent levels between SD and HD channels, volume level inexplicably varying {see [1]}
  8. Occasional delay before picture appears when changing channel {see [1], [2]}Assumed fixed
  9. If HDMI and SCART are connected menus will only appear on HDMI output {see [1], [2]}Fixed in 4/2/2104 update
  10. Older recordings list items sometimes show incorrect dates such as 'today' or 'yesterday' {[1]}Fixed in 30/10/2012 update
  11. On startup from high eco mode box appears to have hung at 'nearly there' screen but if left several minutes eventually starts a second boot and comes up fine giving an overall startup time of 7-10 minutes rather than the normal 103 seconds {see [1]} New bug in 30/10/2012 update, fixed in 8/1/2013 update
  12. On startup (could be after a maintenance mode recovery attempt or some other fault etc) box fails with 'Boot Fail, Invalid Signature' after which the box does not work. So far there are about 15 reported cases and the only solution has been a replacement box (via Humax for retail boxes or via BT for BT Humax boxes). {see [1], [2], [3]} Fixed in 6/3/2013 update
  13. At boot up (when trying to recover from a problem) YouView box triggers the full initial setup process again with an end result that all recordings are lost (so far a rare problem) {see [1]}
  14. Regular occurrences of YVM104 network connection error message requiring a power cycle to clear {see [1], [2]}
  15. Fast forward, rewind and skip back/forward occasionally become stuck on {see [1], [2], [3]}Fixed in 23/4/2013 update
  16. HD channels and recordings can suffer from sound hiccups or crackle {see [1], [2]}Hiccup fixed in 8/1/2013 update, crackle fixed in 23/4/2013 update
  17. While watching a recording if you press play to see the playbar (e.g. to see how far through the programme you are) you then need to press it twice to dismiss it and then twice again before it brings up the playbar again {see [1]}Fixed in 23/4/2013 update
  18. EPG reports 'no information available' on all channels and shows the date is Saturday 1st January 2000 and any scheduled recordings also then fail. This occurs when the box fails to correctly set the time and defaults to 1/1/2000 and at present can only be cleared by power cycling the box whereas there needs to be a mechanism for the box to correct the time automatically with several retries over a short time period in such situation {see [1]}Fixed in 19/2/2013 update
  19. Scheduled recording (on Humax YouView boxes) for channels on COM4 and COM5 muxes will fail if also time shift watching another channel from those muxes when the recording begins {see [1]} Fixed in 18/6/2013 update
  20. Occasionally when pressing play to start viewing a recording a black screen is given and the box needs power cycling to restore normal operation. This black screen lock up appears to also occurs in other usage scenarios {see [1]}New bug in 23/4/2013 update, assumed fixed
  21. HDMI CEC TV standby-to-on and source selection feature not working as expected {see [1], [2], [3], [4]}Improvements in 18/6/2013 update but further improvements may still be required
  22. Fast forward/rewind speeds shown on screen do not match those shown on LCD panel on Humax YouView box {see [1]}
  23. When a series recording has initially been set the scheduled recordings page potentially confusingly shows both an entry for the next episode and then an entry for the series recording (after the first entry has recorded just the series record line remains but one might expect to only ever see this single line) {see [1]}Note this is not a bug as the behaviour is by design, however it has no apparent value to the user except to lead to potential confusion hence being on this list as an issue rather than a simple suggestion for improvement
  24. Unable to record from new Drama channel (channel 20) on Huawei TalkTalk YouView boxes {see [1]} Fixed in 25/11/2013 TalkTalk updated
  25. No sound immediately after turning the box on {see [1]}Assumed fixed
  26. Front panel display clock time is only set on full startup and hence does not change for the twice yearly daylight saving hour changes until the box is restarted (which if in low-eco mode may be some time) {see [1]}
  27. Front panel display timer decrements rather than increments after a rewind of live TV {see [1]}
  28. SCART pin 8 remains hot when in low eco mode standby which interferes with expected TV source auto switching behaviour {see [1], [2]}
  29. Recording indicator displays when no recording is in progress {see [1]}New bug in 3/12/2013 update, fixed in 23/10/2014 update
  30. Recordings fail when watching on demand {see [1]}New bug in 10/1/2014 update, fixed in 18/3/2014 update
  31. Part watched recording occasionally spontaneously changing from part watched to watched {see [1]}New bug in 18/3/2014 update
  32. Series linked recording of IP TV channels failing for back to back programmes (and possibly other related scenarios) {see [1]}New bug in 4/2/2014 update, assumed fixed in 1/10/2014 update
  33. Running Huawei YouView box operation freezes when an ethernet cable is reconnected {see [1]}Fixed in 18/8/2014 update
  34. Setup wizard may fail/restart unexpectedly on Huawei YouView box at postcode entry stage {see [1]}
  35. Ability to set series link recordings fails and scheduled recordings list empty: sometimes cleared by a power cycle, other times by a maintenance mode recover keeping recordings, but on other occasions a full reset/maintenance mode wiping recordings has been required {see [1]}
  36. On occasion on changing channel there is sound but no picture, changing away and back to the channel then clears the issue {see [1]}Fixed in 23/10/2014 update
  37. Some recordings listed as only being 1-3 minutes long. In some cases playing the recording a second time will reveal the full programme is there and can be watched, in other cases this 'trick' does not work. Issue become prominent since 23/10/2014 update although only affecting some users some of the time {see [1]} New bug in 23/10/2014 update, cause finally identified 22/1/2015, fix from Humax being tested 29/1/2015, fixed in 2/2/2015 update
  38. Surround sound setting unexpectedly changes back to stereo, appears to happen when pressing the subtitles or audio description remote control buttons {see [1], [2]} Assumed fixed for subtitles in 23/10/2014
  39. Audible crack sound when live channel or recording switches between HD/5.1 and SD/2.1 content (e.g. at start and end of ad breaks in an HD film) {see [1]} New bug in 23/10/2014 update
  40. Pink or blank screen on startup when using HDMI connection {see [1], [2]} New bug possibly from 2/2/2015 maintenance update?
  41. Box fails to tune any channels and tuning operation only lasts a few seconds {see [1], [2], [3]} Unconfirmed new bug (or perhaps hardware issue with T1xxx boxes) emerging June 2015; presumed fixed in 3/9/2015 update
  42. Channels failing to stay tuned, scheduled recordings list changing, coming and going. As a consequence of this many failed recordings then occurring {see [1]} New issue June 2015, appears to be affecting retail Humax boxes running the 24/6/2014 software update; issue may or may not relate also to item 41 above; elements of issue confirmed as a bug 30/7/2015; fix in final testing 5/8/2015; fixed in 3/9/2015 update
  43. Problem with Humax boxes setup in multi-region area, whereby in some circumstances, if you are tuned to one MUX, you may have issues with recording on another {see [1]} New bug reported late May 2015 and confirmed 15/6/2015; assumed fixed in 24/11/2015 upFailed/missed recordings on Humax YouView boxes when the box is in standby, that will pick up recording part way through if the box is brought out of standby {see [1]}date but issues appear to remain as of 24/9/2016
  44. Audio distortion on live TalkTalk internet channels when accessed from Humax YouView boxes {see [1]} Confirmed bug 25/1/2015; temporary work around is to pause for 1 second and then watch in chase play
  45. Netflix player buffering at 25% {see [1]} Under investigation as of 20/7/2015
  46. Cannot exit iPlayer on TalkTalk boxes, have to restart box instead {see [1]} Issue acknowledged 4/8/2015, fix in development
  47. Huawei TalkTalk boxes are truncating thttps://community.youview.com/youview/discussion/4610095/consolidated-list-of-bugs-and-faults/p1he channel list at channel 835 and in so doing cutting off RTE channels for customers in Northern Ireland, Humax boxes do not appear to do this {see [1], [2]}
  48. Cannot access Settings when there is no internet connection {see [1]} Fixed in 24/11/2015 update
  49. (Intermittently) recordings cannot be set on several channels (typically 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 13, 14, 24, 28, 33, 45, 102, 104, 105, 130, 131, and some radio channels) with the error message 'Sorry YouView cannot record this' {see [1]} New bug in 24/11/2015 update, fixed in 15/12/2015 update
  50. Audio description is heard on some programmes (e.g. on sky living) even when the setting is off {see [1]} Bug confirmed 11/1/2016 and fix in development
  51. Some stutter/judder on non 50Hz native content, e.g. 60Hz Netflix content {see [1],[2]}
  52. Netflix crashes/hangs at midnight {see [1]}
  53. In the absence of an aerial and/or internet connection there can be issues accessing settings (which would potentially allow an issue to be fixed if accessible) or some functionality that should not need such a connection (e.g. Netflix not working without an aerial connection when a network connection should be sufficient) {see [1],[2]}
  54. Next Gen: bounced out of MyTV on exiting a recording if 2 other recordings are underway {see [1]}
  55. Next Gen: EPG and MyTV transparency effect is pointless {see [1]}
  56. Next Gen: wrong programme found under tile when entering MyTV just as a new recording begins {see [1]}
  57. Audio restart delayed (approximately 1 second for each 10 minutes paused) after a long pause in live TV or recording playback {see [1]}
  58. Next gen: MyTV tiles blank images {see [1]}
  59. Next gen: incorrect series tile behaviour in MyTV overview after deleting a recording in the series; the series tile does not correctly show the drop by 1 in the number of items in the series until you completely exit and re-enter MyTV
  60. After using the netflix app an undesired sharpening filter/haloing effect is applied to all content. Issue is cleared by a reboot of the box {see [1]}
  61. Next gen: recordings in MyTV do not display a suitable symbol when they have surround sound, yet the same items in the EPG do {see [1]}
  62. Failed/missed recordings on Humax YouView boxes when the box is in standby, that will pick up recording part way through if the box is brought out of standby {see [1]}
  63. The T4000 Netflix app produces an error message if one binge watches enough episodes triggering the 'are you still watching' netflix message {see [1, 2]}
A fairly common type of problem report is issues with on-demand players but these issues tend to be isolated to individual instances rather than forming a pattern demonstrating a clear repeatable problem with any particular on-demand player.The list above focuses on the YouView system rather than the hardware. However, it is perhaps worth noting one particular hardware issue (that has primarily affected Humax T1000 boxes) whereby the box fails to boot and appears stuck showing a please wait message. This typically suggests it has failed to access the hard disk and whilst this can point to a hard disk failure appears to often point to a power supply issue. Such a situation may be recovered after successive reboots but the box generally gets worse until it becomes unusable and needs replacing (or in theory the power supply part repairing).

Please do use the thanks or like reactions at the bottom of this post if you wish to say thanks for the work that goes into maintaining this
to help get it reasonably well placed in the frequently asked questions list to make it easier for others to find and hence access the individual topics linked from here. [note the likes/thanks are very low since they did not carry over from the old forum system where it had gained many likes over the years :) ]

    Consolidated list of bugs and faults now located above

    The list now contained in the post above originally resided here within this first topic post. The list was initially created on 27/10/2012 and maintained within this post until 4/12/2013 when the forum software changed meaning the mechanism being used/exploited to manage this post no longer worked. YouView kindly granted me additional access on 3/6/2014 which combined with an adjustment/fix deployed by Get Satisfaction on 24/6/2014 enables me to both maintain such posts again and provides a little additional flexibility which I have chosen to exploit by maintaining the list within the main opening topic post going forward.

    As ever if you spot any errors or know of extra information that can be added to the above just add a reply to the topic and provided the forum software allows me I'll do my best to update the information :)

    No thanks is required or expected but always gladly received and, as per Roy's recent suggestion elsewhere, all (including YouView staff) are welcome to like this first reply post in such threads as recognition should they wish to ;-)

    In my opinion, item 1 is currently the most serious bug but a fix is expected imminently now. There has been no announcement so far that YouView have completed testing the fix so it seems likely it will not make it into the update for the 30/10/2012. However, given the severity of this issue it seems very likely that if that is the case then the fix will be pushed out as a maintenance software update in the near future as it cannot wait to be rolled into the following main release in 3-4 months time.

    To those that are suffering from lots of clipped recordings item 2 would also be understandably seen as a serious issue. There is much discussion as to how it should be addressed and whether it should be seen as purely a broadcaster fault that they should absolutely address or whether in the real world such a solution is never going to be perfect and hence an intelligent soft padding feature should be added as well.

    Whilst I am personally not suffering from the lost channels issue and also not suffering significant clipped recordings, a fix for the first and action to progressively address the second will be crucial to satisfying key customer concerns.

    Issues that I have suffered from are 3, 5, 6 and 10 and whilst none of these are particularly serious they can be inconvenient from time to time. No doubt though they and all the other issues will be addressed, if not in the update on 30/10/2012 then in subsequent updates. Likewise hopefully if further bugs are identified and added to the above list in due course then they will equally be addressed in a timely fashion.

    There are now two of us who have completely lost On Demand as a result of applying the recent update. The symptoms were identical; the box works in all ways, including reporting itself connected to the internet,and responding to pings and externally mandated changes of IP address, except:-

    (i) There is no On Demand of any kind
    (ii) Attempts to re-establish the internet connection result in constant YVM104s
    (iii) Attempts to restart the box in Maintenance Mode fail with 'Invalid Signature; failed to reboot'

    There is no consumer recovery possible, and the unit has to be returned to Humax.

    One occurrence might be a coincidence; two does not quite establish a pattern. But given the severity of this issue, I believe it should be on the list.

    Hi Roy - that issue is now in the list as item 12. Whilst I would not wish to see others suffer the same problem it will be interesting to see if there are further reports or comments from YouView or Humax etc so we have a better understanding of the cause and likelihood of occurance of the issue.

    I've updated item 1 in the bugs and faults list above to highlight the fix now available for the channel loss problem on Humax YouView boxes (although as noted it is currently only available to retail box owners, including trialists, and not to those who have got their Humax box through BT).

    Keith - many thanks for putting this list together. We do look at every post on the forum but it's very useful to have a list in one place for everyone to see, and it's a reminder for me to check the status of our bug tracking tickets regularly.

    I've just noticed that number 10 (Older recordings list items sometimes show incorrect dates...), is marked as fixed in the 30th October update, but the tracking ticket didn't have the right "flag" to make it to the release notes. We'll do our best to prevent this from happening again.

    Thanks Piers - I was starting to suspect that one was fixed since I had not seen it happen since the update :)

    Biggest annoyance for me is item 7 in particular the extremely high volume of the BBC iPlayer.
    I know this has been referred to the BBC, but they deserve a major kicking over this.
    I've had a Roku streaming player since March and this exhibits the same problem.
    I am just astonished that this problem has still not been fixed!

    Hi Keith,
    I would have through the issue with random network disconnections being including in this list and having to reboot the box to find the network again would be included?

    I've added an item 14 about regular network connection problems (YVM104). If the references I've given there are not the best/correct ones let me know and I'll adjust it further :)

    Obviously 11.

    A PVR that can't even boot is as much use as a chocolate teapot.

    On the topic of 14 regularly get this but you don't need to do a power cycle. I go into the Internet settings, manually change the dns setting. But cancel and the box then the box automatically resets the ip and works again.

    I have a 1GB box which has had the updates on the 30th October and in November, I'm still getting around 80% error "your disk is full" then all my recordings seem to fail (rerecorded with +1's etc). A power cycle removes it temporary! Will it be fixed? Tried support each time a standard response.

    Yes the number of reported cases does seem to be rising slowly but steadily. I've adjusted the item slightly with a new estimate of the number of people who have reported the issue.

    Could you add an item for the bug where you need to press the Play button twice when viewing a recording (to see the remaining duration etc) as it ignores every other one?

    My bt supplied humax has the dreaded 104 error / no on demand / Maintenance mode invalid boot signature failure.

    It was on the jan 2013 firmware.

    Just had a number 13 (unlucky for me)
    - box froze when changing channel
    - first re-start failed
    - second re-start went to maintenance mode, prompting a software reset ("recommended")
    - went through full initial set-up sequence, all recordings lost
    - software is 9.5.0/1.2.6

    Perhaps this one isn't quite so rare....

    I had number 18, now reported fixed, but it did get my series recordings over the week it was wrong, albeit it stored them separately from their rightful series folders.

    And the timer did run, so it was 'Jan 7' when I spotted it, returning from a holiday.

    Hi Craig - I've corrected the text of item 9 to correctly say the menus are only visible via HDMI when HDMI and SCART are connected. If only the actually technical problem could be fixed so quickly :)

    Looks like a good choice if the bundled package of online services match your needs. No ITV, C4 or Five catch up but there is Netflix.
