Nick - maybe I got it wrong but I thought Piers said it's Humax that has to be asked to support this.

Sam - We also have a Humax box at our house so it would be interesting to find out their spin on this.

Nick - I'll post here (in this same thread) when I get a reply.

Just for clarification purposes, the YouView Main user interface and updates are written and updated purely within the YouView operation, and Humax, AFAIK have no direct involvement with this. Humax purely provide the hardware, and nucleus manufacturer software on which this YouView software operates.
Humax provide the core device software (and presumably Huawei also provide similar for their boxes), above which the YouView software operates. This is the user interface that we all, who use YouView, interact with. Each update of the YouView software requires a specific level of the Manufacturer software (as some requirements for the YouView development may involve the manufacturer needing to update their component of the system).
So, the updates are actually issued by YouView, along with any necessary compatible manufacturer software required to make it all work.
I am happy to be corrected if I have the wrong end of the stick here, but in this light, it makes sense for YouView to maintain control of the update procedure, and not the respective manufacturers.

Nick and others - there are some good ideas posted here, but the system we have works well for most people, and as designed should work for everyone who has an internet connection.

YouView boxes download new software in the background, verify that they got it correctly, and stores it in a spare software "bank" so you can't damage a box by turning it off during the process. From reports on the forum, we see that it's not working perfectly for some Humax customers, and we're already talking to their engineers about those problems.

    Hi Piers

Can you clarify this a little for me please? Which process can't you/shouldn't you be able to damage a box by interrupting the power to it? Just the update download, or the actual update process itself, or both?

In theory, both. The process is supposed to be entirely "atomic", and the new software image won't be booted until every single byte is in the right place. We may not have got their quite yet with our current manufacturers.

I would also like to see the option of disabling automatic updates. In the event of a bad update being released this could stop the situation getting worse. Plus over time a feature could be released that people are unhappy with - I recall years back on the Topfield / Humax where 'series link' disabled the auto padding feature (memory a little rusty these days) and many wish to keep one to forgo another.

Furthermore, I support the 'update by USB' request. Agreed that updates should be perfect when released, but by making them available by another means could lead YouView Support to recover failed boxes by talking the owner through a process rather than resort to costly swapping boxes over / collecting boxes.

While not everyone is computer savvy, people can achieve a lot more these days than they could 10 years ago, plus nearly every family has a 'computer expert'!

I rang Humax but was just told to contact Youview.

I might try again when the next update is released.
