No Output from Youview box

Over the last week my YouView box has been tempremental.
When turned on the Humax screen appears, then the YouView screen, but although on the box itself it says it is on a channel, and we can change channels, nothing actually appears on the screen.
Our first thought was a dodgy HDMI cable. We've replaced that but it's the same.
Tried doing a reboot in Maintenance Mode, but again it gets to where it should be in maintenance mode but all we have is a black screen.

Then randomly it will work perfectly, or sometimes it seems to be working, but the YouView screen is flickery red and then the program comes on also flickery red or just sound.

Any suggestions?

We got our box as a free trial so I don't think we're entitled to send it off for repair :(

Sounds like a dodgy connection. Have you tried using a SCART lead to see if it is the HDMI output rather than the rest of the circuitry?

The usual warranty for Humax boxes is 2 years however those in the pre-launch trial had a one year warranty from the date of delivery. Was this the "free trial" you refer to?

As a general observation, the last firmware update seems to have made the boxes a bit more fussy about the handshaking with the television although that would affect the sound as well. Have you tried another HDMI input on your TV? The other thing is to make sure your TV can accept the default setting as the box will revert to that if the handshaking fails. Some older sets cannot accept 1080p, only 1080i.

I also suspect that you are failing the HDMI handshake. It sounds like a box component problem. I predict that you will get a picture with a SCART lead.

I had HDMI problems with my trial box earlier this year. The sequence of screens commenced ok. In my case I got a tv screen but the HDMI handshake failed and I got an error message on HD channels which corrected itself after an hour or so of SD viewing. I tried an SCART connection which worked fine.
Over time the problems got more severe and I recently got a new box.

Hurrah, it works with a SCART lead. My 2 year old will just have to be a little more patient for a few days if he wants to watch a DVD as we'll have to do a little re-wiring until we can buy a new one.

My free trial was through Mumsnet. I checked and I've had it since March 2013 so I may still be covered on the warranty.
I have a horrible feeling I threw the box away about 3 weeks ago when I was having a sort out in the loft. Is this likely to be a problem with the update? Or is it a hardware problem so it's worth enquiring about the warranty?

You lost me on the 1080p 1080i thing I'm afraid. Our TV is about 3 or 4 years old so I'd hope it's okay.
