Consolidated list of updates and changes (Travelog: looking back at the journey so far)

I thought I would create this topic as a companion to the two consolidated lists
The aim of this topic is to draw upon the information in those topics and the official update announcements to present in a single fairly compact form the evolution of the product. One could consider it to be a consolidated list of updates and changes as a useful single point reference topic :)
It should of course be noted this is a look at the journey so far and whilst this and the (other) consolidate list topics might at times result in queries, discussion or speculation about future developments (what some might term the roadmap of the journey ahead) that is confidential and is understandably not something YouView will be drawn on. In particular see point 18 in the community terms of use which discourages indepth discussion or questioning about YouView's confidential roadmap.
Introductions over, hopefully everyone is sitting comfortably in their back seats, so lets look out the rear window and see how far we have come, being mindful YouView are the drivers up front and they need to keep their eyes on the road so please do not distract them with questions about the roadmap they are following or 'are we there yet' questions for checkpoints on the way ;-)

If you just want to know what software version your box should be running then you may find this YouView software version page helpful!

If you are just interested in a list of channels and whether they are available on any YouView box or just certain ISPs see this lists.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As of January 2019 Vanilla have adjusted their systems such that the character limit on posts has dropped from about 65000 to 50000. Although I have asked YouView to investigate this with Vanilla (and I have proposed a work around), as of April 2019, I have received no significant response. As such this topic (which a number of people have noted they find very useful) is effectively frozen and unable to receive further content :(

  • New microfeature within the USB keyboard support - pressing the "i" letter key on a usb keyboard will also activate the info function as well as the "insert" key (unless your focus is in a text field)
  • A fix for a bug that prevented access to the Settings if there was no internet connection
  • A fix for a problem with Humax boxes setup in multi-region area, whereby in some circumstances, if you are tuned to one MUX, you may have issues with recording on another
  • A fix to prevent the YVM302 appearing for issues not related to signal quality

The above topic opener has been split across that post and this first comment due to the current database backend limit on comment text. Experience would suggest the limit is 2^16 (65536) characters. A similar limit was hit in the old GetSat forum system. GetSat kindly responded to feedback and increased the limit to allow for longer posts (even though such a need should be very rare). One might speculate Vanilla could change the backend database field from TEXT to MEDIUMTEXT type and thus allow for longer posts. Within the forum management area there is then a comment length limit that can be set for a given forum such that this change just gives more flexibility but does not mean all forums accept long comments by default.

    • New standby mode setting added to replace the old eco-mode setting. Whereas the old eco-mode setting had two options (high and low), this new setting has three options (smart standby, energy saver, always ready). The latter two options would appear to be equivalent to the old eco-mode settings. The new smart standby mode is now the recommended option (and basically seems to be the same as the old eco-mode low / new always ready mode except that the boxes is put into a low energy use state at night)
    • The YouView Help App can now be opened by pressing the Help Button on the remote control, a new Help option in the YouView menu, or by pressing Help whenan error message appears on screen

    • Some people thought this release had also exposed more Arqiva Connected Red Button channels. The list is now : 35 - QVC Beauty; 40 - Rocks & Co 1; 76 - Jewellery Maker; 135 - RT; 226 - CCTV; 239 - Sonlife; 240 - Motors; 242 - Vintage TV; 252 - ABN TV; 253 - Passion TV; 254 - Showcase TV

    • note outside of the YouView functionality, unlike YouView PVRs, these TVs offer wifi network connectivity, DLNA, back to previous channel from remote button, partial ability to reorder channel listings, stretchyvision, further FreeView IP channels (that use MHEG-IC and are thus not available on YouView PVRs), plus additional players/apps such as Amazon Instant Video, Youtube, TED, and the ability to download/add further Android apps, e.g. Plex

I don't think I can Like the original posting (can I? And if not, why not?) so I've Liked the 'As Ever'. And I encourage all right-thinking persons to do the same...

Two big fixes not mentioned in this highly praiseworthy magnum opus, I think, are the BFIS fix and the 'menus over SCART even when HDMI is connected'. I'll go a-hunting and update the thread if I can find dates for these.

    Edit:

10.6.0 in March 2013 brought the BFIS Fix:-
    https://community.youview.com/youview...

It is there in your list, Keith, but under a rather obscure description, and we had to wring out an admission from YouView that they were talking about BFIS.

17.3.0 in February 2014 brought the SCART menus fix:-
    https://community.youview.com/youview...

It just says 'undefined bug fixes' above, but then aren't they all till we press YouView for details?

NB: smart new suit of clothes there, Keith :-)

Interesting to see we have gone from an average of 1 software update a month to 1 in six months this year (and a minor one to fix the recording issues created by the original)

It's interesting to see how the number of significant changes for all users shrunk over the months (postcode validation - Hmmm)... During the last quarter of 2013 the biggest releases were only for Talk Talk and BT from what I can see.

Where are the performance improvements that they promised last year as the EPG is extremely slow now and is actually making users leave Youview for other competitors.  What was in the Feb 2014 catch-all "Undefined bug fixes"?  Well... At least the BFIS nightmare was fixed last year :)

It's pretty quick on the new BT box.
    Time to upgrade?

Hi Roy - I've not yet got the fix I asked about on the GS forum (as per my comments there yesterday and also on the features and bugs topic which I think you've since seen) but given that GS have confirmed that will be coming I felt it was now safe to use the element that does so far work from the enhanced privileges YouView granted me at the start of the month. So for now I'll wait on GS to fix the 'full editing of my own posts functionality via enhance privileges' which will make it much easier to rework those other two topics cleanly :)

To be honest, this list of all the releases across all supported platforms is something that should have been done by the YouView team as part of their technical support documentation made available in the Q&A/support sections of the website.

On a more positive note you've done a fantastic job Keith in getting all this desparative data and notes together into a single, easy to read list. Good man!

To be fair, the first three months of this year there were uncertainties (renegotiation of shareholder agreement) which may well have had an impact on the update schedule.

Since then, there's been a recruiting drive. Advertising, interviewing, employing - these things take time.

Lol...I love to play devil's advocate. I actually really like the YouView service and am happy to defend it but I also think in these times a company should keep its customers informed at all stages...all these things are shouted about all the time and announced by the head guys themselves (so we can't pull the everything has to be secret card) but then when they don't come to fruition (as we all know can and will happen) it is extremely poor service to bury your head in the sand and pretend nothing is wrong...

    c c - you're adopting a more Panglossian view (and I don't mean that in a nasty way).
But I'm afraid I'm siding with the "bad cop".

By and large, I agree with the criticisms, but I do think a lot of the blunders and delay and secrecy are just due to too many partners. Which is part of the experiment and unavoidable.

I wouldn't upgrade now. I'd wait for Freeview Connect boxes personally. I guess they don't bother with EPG tweaks. Just release a new box and expect everyone to upgrade.

Stormy, If they don't get their finger out and release a ton of new features and requested functions soon I can see Freeview Connect being the FTA service that YouView was meant to be (instead of the pay walled BT/TT one we have at the moment).

Or freeview connect could get bogged down in delays and deliver a cheap second rate service with nothing extra to note a year later than YouView...

Aye, who knows what's going on in the world of Freeview at the moment... My personal preference would be that YouView is currently beavering away with their new fleet of developers and creating a monster pan-ISP release.

Hi Sanj - glad to hear you like this new topic. It has alleviated some of my withdrawal symptoms from YouView forum list creation and maintenance as well as being something that over time will hopefully build into a another very useful dynamic reference topic :)

My inbox has certainly been burning through the day with the subsequent lively discussions so hopefully everyone else has found it helpful too. I'll be looking forward to having something new to add to the timeline in due course, quite when we will all just have to wait and see :)

I will of course be giving the consolidated list of improvements and feature requests and the consolidated list of bugs and faults a face lift/polish too in due course (but not quite yet although they have had a slight polish of the topic opening post and revised links to ordered lists for those that like those sorts of things).

As ever no thanks is required or expected but always gladly received and, as per Roy's suggestion, all (including YouView staff) are welcome to like my first reply post in such threads as recognition should they wish to ;-)

On a peripheral note, I thought someone might comment on the fact I even put in an avatar for myself after nearly 2 years. It should not be too difficult to work out what it is and why it thus seemed relevant. Whether I'll stick with it time will tell ;-)
