Future recordings

As I understand it I can only record up to 7 days in advance. What do I do if I'm on holiday for a fortnight? I know there's an App but I have a windows phone for which there is no App. Even the old Vision box allowed me to record 14 days in advance.

If it is a series you can of course use Series Link to record episodes more than 7 days in the future.

For programmes that are first shown more than 7 days in the future you may be able to use catch-up players to watch them online when you get back.

Otherwise as you say you need a mobile app, or else get someone in to set the recordings for you closer to the time.

But agreed, manual recordings should have been enabled ages ago.

The 14-day EPG on the old BT Vision boxes was a BT special, and required BT to construct the EPG accordingly, and send it out over the Internet, not the air. Pretty complex.

Perhaps you can get someone in your family, or a friend, who does have an Android or iOS (Apple) device to set up the YouView app and sync it to your box before you go on holiday?

Then, they can set recordings for you remotely, no matter where they are, when you tell them what you want from that second week.

But as Ceejay says, if you set a Series record for repeating programmes, like East Enders, this will get them in the second week as well as the first. So it's only new one-off programmes, or new series starting only in that second week, that you have to worry about.

Another possibility is if the programme can be reserved using trailer booking. Trailers for some programming more than a week ahead has a green "book me" button option shown in the top right corner. Pressing the green button on your remote control while the prompt is on screen will tell your box to book the recording.

Thanks, that's all logical and things I'd already thought of. Its not the stuff for series record (not that I watch Eastenders!), its one-off documentaries and dramas that I'm likely to miss. The Trailers option sounds like a good one to investigate. I guess I was really thinking 'why does this not do what the old one did?', not realising the point about the EPG. Hopefully BT will invest in a Windows App soon - most developers seem to concentrate on Apple, then Android and maybe Windows at some point later. I do have an Android tablet, but don't always take it away with me. Oh well, good to know its not just some feature I've missed. Thanks all

My advice is to keep taking the tablets :-)
