The YouView YouTube channel has plenty of videos showing just how awful it is going to be. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI7H... Over the top Video on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W520_... I cannot say I like the look of the MYTV RECORDINGS LIBRARY (at 00:50 of 1:51) in the slightest. All photos and Windows 10 like cards. Where is the list? Please tell me it will be changeable in settings. (capitalised because that is how it is going to show on screen - it took me a moment to read what it said. Ask any postman/postwoman and they will tell you properly capitalised words are easier to read)

Thanks Ian, that paints a very different picture. So they are actually asking for extended triallist rather than actually fully releasing it as was eluded to.

Errr... Thats not what he meant, as if he was already a traillist, he wouldn't have to download the new firmware. He'd have it already.

Looking here they only started asking for triallists on 3rd November

    http://www.talktalkmembers.com/t5/Tal...

To sign people up, roll out the trial software, get feedback, fix issues and then go to public roll out in 3 weeks sounds a little hopeful to me.

    OK.
And what do you hope for your Ultra box with this new platform? An Ultra that stands apart form all others? Including a Q?

I would suggest they have been alpha testing for a while and they are now moving to beta testing. Exactly why they need to publicly state that is a bit beyond me..other than the obvious.

It may be closed but I would put money that only the people that signed up before it closed will get the new software in the next month. Let's wait and see I suppose
Like I said at the beginning, extended trial not full roll out.

Going back to your earlier question about what I expect.
I expect a box to do a few things better than q but mainly just to do the basics and a bit more well. The old YouView was close but still had room for improvement, I want this new interface to fix and update in a much faster timeframe. I don't expect a q beater but I think it has promise to at least run it close

We have fourteen devices in our house that are capable of showing a moving picture, and our YouView box is tied, by current design, to just one of them.

When I can choose which device I want to watch it on - maybe not all fourteen, but a reasonable sprinkling, certainly - then the YouView box will be a resounding A(nswer) to Sky's Q,

Not sure I understand that question, but this new app definitely works with the old software and the reference above to MyTV indicates that it will work with the new software.

Just had an online chat with TalkTalk...

I've seen a lot of press coverage about a Next-generation TV service being launched by TalkTalk today. If I sign up for a broadband and TV package from you will I get this new TV service?

Yes, you will get the new service, if you sign up for a broadband and TV package.

Can you tell me where I can find more information about this. I can't find any details on your website.

You will receive this with your welcome pack once you have signed up.

But I would like some information before deciding to commit to this.

I will send you the link to this.

Here's the link for you to process your order.

Thank you for chatting with us.

The link was to the TalkTalk Group website and didn't work.
But I did find this (which doesn't tell us anything new):

The NextGen software works with the existing YouView Apps, iOS and Android.

The App talks in real time with the central YouView server, which your YouView box polls at intervals, responds to, and then the server updates your App device, again in real time.

So the App can already communicate in real time; but it is not clear if a new App will be needed to support this functionality direct with the box, or if YouView can just tell your App there is a new server, and the server address is now your box, where NextGen mimics the existing server functionality.

This may be a big ask though, so perhaps there will be a new App built on the basis it can talk direct to your box.

Direct communication implies that your YouView box will become a server, though, unless YouView have done something very clever.

So shall we need to beware of black hats pretending to be our App, for nefarious purposes?

Now it can be told; from Roy using it,

I'd just like to compliment the chosen few who have been trialling the new software for managing not to give anything away. Roy's little slip above is the only slight giveaway that I've spotted :-)

And to clarify my previous post, by "as a triallist" I mean someone who has been involved in prvious trials. I only registered interest in the Next Gen trial about a week ago. The software downloaded last night. My kids are testing it as I type!

Not exactly a slip, as this information was deducible from the earlier published material.

But rather than pretend it was that, I waited to reply until I was free to.

Somebody - I think it might have been Joe - asked me earlier if I had NextGen, and I was going to go back yesterday, and finally reply 'Yes'.

But I can't find the damn posting again :-(
