Presumably the component software version mention via the original link (https://support.youview.com/youview-box/software-updates/humax-software-update-27-46-0) is incorrect and it should read 3.1.148 not 3.1.146.

It was 27-45-0 that included 3.1.146.

The new interface is a major retrograde step that has made actually using the system much harder and removed useful features like the mini TV in the guide. Worse I have had to reset the box 4 times today already. I think it will be bye bye BT and hello Virgin Media.

If you have a problem with your box Keith please start your own thread so more people can see it.
I'm now happy with the disagree icon, because its gone.

It's very disappointing that no-one from YouView is responding to all these comments. Presumably you set up this thread because you intended to read what people have to say about the software change (I don't think we should call this an "upgrade"). It really should be clear to you by now that:

    - The change has been a disaster. Customer response is overwhelmingly negative. To the extent you did any consultation/research before implementing this change then it was sadly inadequate. If a small bunch of people told you this was a "good idea" then the likelihood is they were secretly working for Sky.

    - The customers are not simply a bunch of conservative philistines resistant to any sort of change. We like change if it is an improvement, but people don't like this because it is materially worse than what went before. The comparison to Windows 8 is spot on.

    - It's so bad that it will threaten the ongoing popularity of YouView. I chose it after careful thought because it was the best platform. This is no longer the case. You can't afford to behave like this when others are upping their game.

Please could someone from YouView respond to all these comments and confirm when and how we can reverse this change and get back the platform which had virtually nothing wrong with it?

I hate the new software. When I want to watch recordings, I want a list of their names not little pictures! I takes forever to scroll through the programmes and when you delete one they jump all over because of the way they are "listed". We need to have the chance to revert to the old system.

What moron designed this user interface? I hate it. It's clumsy and confusing. I just want to see my recordings in a list. I don't want to see pictures but I do want to see the details that used to be there in the old interface. And why is one programme on every page four times the size of all the others? Doesn't make any sense.

GIVE ME THE OLD INTERFACE BACK.

I agree with you completely - what can we do to change this?

27.46.0 What an absoulte load of rubbish. If your not careful you could very easily delete an entire series of a recorded programme and searching through the recordings to find one to watch is almost impossible. Please sort this out so that it is back to the previous version for the recordings listing, at least that way we get a full programme title and more importantly search either by date or programme title.

Update 27.46 came in without me saying yay/nay which seems a bit off since it's a major change. I miss the box upper left with the channel preview but my major gripe is reserved for the recordings list with those little confusing images and incomplete text. Can I *please* have a simple text list of my recordings. If I had the option I'd revert to the old software simply on this issue. But I don't have the option - see above for installation/imposition without permission. I do like the other features I've seen though - clearer settings options & much better contrast of text to background in listings spring to mind . One difficulty I'm having is that BT player doesn't seem to be working at all - simply "loading..." followed by a blank screen when it's selected. I have BT as ISP but I don't have a subscription to BT tv, which might be the problem. Please keep the updates coming!

Like so many others on here, I joined purely to voice my opinion on the monumentally terrible changes that have been forced upon me as a user.

I bought my Humax box after careful consideration and testing in John Lewis. Many of the features that I specifically bought the box for (such as alphabetic sorting of a text list of recordings) have been removed. I find it unbelievable that YouView do not allow the users access to re-flash the old firmware back onto the boxes that they bought. At least when MS foisted the "upgrade" to Win10, they allowed users to revert back to Win7 if they wanted.

I also find it unbelievable that YouView's response to all their customers' feedback is: "La, la, la, we can't hear you. A few people in our office thought it was great, so that's all that matters".

There are so many things that have turned my Humax box from something that was frankly perfect, into what is now a TERRIBLE USER EXPERIENCE. All of the below are due to the update that YouView forced upon it without my consent:

    1. In MyView, we have Pictures, with less words.
This is by far the worst update. (As voiced by MANY others). We are not in playschool. We can read. We want words, not pictures. Where you have put words, we do not get the full programme title. As most new programmes now begin with "New: ", the few words that we do get are no use, as you have to click on each picture to read what the programme is.

    2. YouView have removed the ability to sort recordings alphabetically.
We can't even attempt to get around the lack of useful programme description (as per my point 1) because YouView removed alphabetic sorting. Why did YouView remove this useful feature?

    3. YouView now does not automatically find alternative programmes if it detects a clash when you attempt to record 3 programmes at once.
Previously, the box would suggest an alternate time if I attempted to record 3 things at once. Now it does not do this. So now one has to manually search through all the other "+1" or "+24" or other "repeats" channels in an attempt to find a copy of the programme that you are trying to record that clashes. Another very useful feature has been taken away. Why did YouView remove this feature?

    4. If you have a series recorded, and click on the picture to open up the "folder", the default landing position is on the newest recording, with no shortcut to get to the earliest recording.
Nobody watches a series backwards. So you have to click through all the recorded episodes to get to the earliest recorded programme in the series. There is no shortcut to get to the earliest recorded programme in the series. Previously, there was. You've added countless more clicks to get to where we want to be. Why did YouView remove this feature?

    5. When Playing a Series Recorded programme, pressing Stop does not take you back to the Picture of the programme you were watching.
When you've finished watching an episode of a recorded series and want to delete it, on pressing Stop, it takes you to the picture representing the entire series. So then, you click on that picture, then manually click through ALL the episodes that have been recorded just to get to the episode that you were watching, just to be able to delete it. Previously, the box would default to land on the programme episode that you were just watching, so you could instantly delete it. (Or carry on watching it at a later time). Now we have so many more unnecessary navigation clicks to perform. Why did YouView remove this feature?

    6. The box does not offer you the HD option when you click to record a programme on an SD channel.
It's bad enough we can't remove or re-order the channels. Now if you want to record HD, you have to either know the channel reference number for the HD version, or scroll through tens of channels and press record. Why did YouView remove this feature?

    7. If you set a Series Record for a specific series, the box will record ALL episodes of ALL OTHER series of that programme on any channel
For example, if you select to Series Record "GPs behind closed doors", which currently has 1 new episode per week, the Humax will record all old episodes of "GPs behind closed doors" from old series repeats that are shown daily on other channels. So now I have to delete 6 of the 7 recordings, as they are NOT from the current series that I'm interested in. Series Recording is really messed up. Clearly it was not tested by YouView.

    8. YouView removed the ability to "cycle" through pages of recorded programs.
If you get to the last page and want to go back to the first page, you have to click back through all the pages that you've just been through, rather than just clicking again to get from the last page to the first page. Again, YouView has introduced countless more unnecessary clicks. They removed the ability to go from the last page of recordings straight to the first page. Why did YouView remove this feature?

    9. The Black Border that appears at the bottom of the screen when navigating in a recording is very intrusive.
9a.  - When you fast forward through a recording, the black box can obscure pertinent information in the picture. Most programmes in England have 2 minutes at the very beginning of the program where they show you what they're about to show you in a "what's happening in this episode" type montage. I find this pointless, so I like to fast forward through it. It's normally easy to see where the program actually starts, because you see the program title. However now the black bar is obscuring the programme title, so I can't spot that the programme has actually started in earnest. An example of this is "The Secret Lives of 5 Year Olds".

9b. - I often need to use subtitles. The black bar obscures subtitles. If you click the Play button to see how far through a recorded programme you are, the black bar completely obscures the subtitles. So then you have to rewind the programme to see the subtitles that YouView obscured.

With all these woeful, downgrade, painfully annoying features in the new "NextGen" firmware, I do wonder if any YouView employees actually use YouView equipment in their own homes. I for one am considering getting rid of the box, as it's become thoroughly unpleasant to use in every way. And that's a real shame, as when I bought it, it did everything I needed, and did it well.

It seems that YouView see this "NextGen" software as the bees' knees. They even have the laughable gall to call it a software "Upgrade". If their honest opinion is that this user experience is an upgrade to what we had on the "OldGen" firmware, then really that is a very, very bad outlook for the future for YouView customers.

Yes, 9, annoys me too. Another example ...  we watch Coast to country, and the first few mins are generic ramblings about the show format etc, so we would always FF that until the 'Coast Or Country' logo appears -  meaning that the new program has started. Now, this black bar obscures that logo so its impossible to see where it starts! Hardly an upgrade is it?  7 sounds very concerning,  not had that happen to me yet, but it sounds like a total fail on someone's behalf.    1 though,  is sill the biggest pain of all. I appreciate that "tiles are here to stay" etc, but within the settings why not just give us the  option of plain text?

Well summarised. I thought it maybe one of those annoying things that got better over time but no, the more we use it the more annoying we find it. What I can't understand is why remove functions that worked perfectly fine. Prior to the Youview we had a Topfield box, it never got the recognition it deserved. it was streaks ahead of any box on the market at the time but sadly not available anymore. We went to the Youview box because it came with our BT broadband package and prior to the upgrade it was a close match to the Toppy, not anymore time to dust down and restore the old Toppy I think.

Indeed; who wants to watch HD anyway?

I agree with much of above but the lack of padding is hugely concerning. I've yet to have a recording start at the beginning of the programme under NewGen. All start 20s in. Folder organisation is fairly trivial next to missing the full recording.

Hi Jonathan - the chances of YouView introducing any padding feature to compliment or instead of the accurate record method are about zero to non-existent based on the position they have firmly held for the last almost 5 years now.

If you want to look back over this long running issue then some reference topics are linked from idea 22 in the consolidated list of improvements and feature requests or item 2 about clipped recordings on the consolidated list of bugs and faults. For completeness I noted there is no change on this matter with next gen in my next gen first impressions post (in the niggly list) :)

That's worrying. The system isn't accurate!

I'm currently moving from Sky and in a transition. So you guys have just got used to missing the start of BBC programmes?!?

Also I've had more failed recordings in a month of Youview than 10 years of Sky. Still doesn't justify Sky's costs...

"So you guys have just got used to missing the start of BBC programmes?!?"
I've never suffered from a clipped BBC recording.
"Also I've had more failed recordings in a month of Youview than 10 years of Sky."
This sounds like a personal problem with your kit. Is your aerial reception ok?
I'd start your own thread as you'll get more help that way.
I'm now happy with the disagree icon, because its gone.

Good for you regarding the BBC recordings. I have 6 clipped BBC shows still on my box. I deleted the others and watched them on iPlayer to get the start.

As for the aerial, it's perfect and recently checked by an engineer. The box is also showing perfect reception.

    "All start 20s in."

That would suggest that your box is receiving the signal to start recording, but not getting going quickly enough. It's always worth trying an eight second re-set if a YouView box misbehaves:

Press and hold the YouView button on your box for 8 seconds, then let go. The box should restart.

We have had our YouView box for over four years and it has never clipped or missed a recording, but I appreciate that it happens. Some broadcasters are better than others at Accurate Record.

CBS are the worst offender for clipped recordings. The BBC recordings should never clip. I would second trying the 8 second reset then if they still clip after that maybe try a maintenance mode reset. Also have you checked for transmitter works in the area. Last time I had clipped recordings on the BBC there was engineer's at the transmitter. As soon as they finished all was well.

It's good that you read the forums and take the time to let people know that you're listening, but i'd wager that the depth of feeling here - much of which comes from people who have registered specifically to ask you to revert the software - is at odds with whatever your user testing is telling you.

Even then, it would be a moot point if you simply gave your customers control over which software load their unit is running. But you won't, which is just a little shy of lunacy.

If you won't allow customers to opt-out of future updates, won't allow customers to revert this update, and if you cannot accept that your UX, design and UI teams (assuming they exist) have got it 'wrong' this time, then I will not be a customer for much longer (I'm looking for a replacement this weekend, as it goes).

When I do find a replacement for my almost-new Humax unit, I'll be sure to leave an appropriate one-star review on Amazon (where I bought it from), and I'll also leave corresponding reviews on mainstream retailer websites across the UK.

That might sound vindictive, but the truth is that I don't think anyone should have this sort of **** foisted on them by Humax, and given that elements of the UI are now almost unusable, I think it's the responsibility of your spurned and ignored ex-customers to let others know what sort of business model Humax is running, and what sort of UX and CX they can expect.

Roy and Visionman are incorrect in applying their analogy
    - the DELL + Windows analogy does not apply to Humax + YouView because anyone can "Flatten" a laptop/PC and install whatever Operating System they want, be it Window XYZ or Linux or whatever,  none of us can install the previous version of the YouView software.
Semantically the analogy is correct, in reality it isn't.  (As a systems developer I have to explain this sort of thing to our 4,000 users most days).

But that Humax have built a box that runs YouView, but that it only runs YouView is irrelevant here; the Dell/Windows analogy is to illustrate the relationship between the two parties, and what a third party can or cannot do is of no consequence here.

The point at issue, as was always the point at issue, is that you cannot blame a Humax for a YouView update any more than you can blame Dell for a Windows update.

Unless of course, you think that Humax should never have agreed to build YouView boxes under those limitations; but that is a rather more esoteric ethical argument.

I honestly don't care. I find such esoteric ethical arguments pointless. Its here and its staying. No matter how good or bad it is.

    ***UPDATE***

Hi all - From today, we'll be rolling out this release to more T2000 customers. We'll also start rolling out to Humax Retail T1000 / T1010 boxes.

If only I'd known I would have disconnected the boss from the internet. Hindsight is a wonderful thing eh?
