Damn auto correct. This should have read "disconnected the box".

Wow - had been waiting with hopeful anticipation for the update, and then it appeared this morning - great thinks I: new shiny stuff! Oh dear. Oh very dear.

TL;DR - the recording/scheduled program listings are horrible - you've lost features and made the UI for managing any sizeable collection much worse. Plus there are navigation disconnects, missing features and AFAICS no killer new feature. Advice to others - stop your box updating if you have a chance, wait for a few months and hope they fix this mess.

Update process was nice and slick, no data appears lost, slick intro video with what looks like a new timeline bar. Then it comes time to use it...

So let's try the guide first - hmm look pretty similar, lots of info, but have lost the mini-channel view which makes a massive disconnect between audio still playing but not having a visible picture (the transparent background *doesn't* count as a picture - so deeply faded and re-coloured that until I found the setting to turn it off I hadn't noticed it was on). Navigation around the guide was ok.

Now my recordings - hmm, one more button press to get to the list and then - WTF? A garbled mess of pictures placed too close to each other. No obvious order from big tile to little tile - no reason for big tile - last recorded? So what - and on page 2->N why is there a big tile? Can't properly see the titles of recording, can't see how many recordings in a series. Page button feels wrong way around too - not sure why but 'up' on listing pages should be page - and 'down' page +, hard to justify with a left/right interface, but definitely feels wrong.

Once I do find the recording I want to watch, somewhere on page 2, the selection then lays over a whole new screen to show the episode list. Pick episode + watch program. Is it me or does jumping forward leave the timeline bar on screen for much longer? And didn't it used to animate away rather than just disappearing? Maybe just that it is taking up more space (for no extra info) now.

Finish record and am back out to the picture list - press delete to get rid of the episode just watched and bang - prompted to delete whole series. WTF2? You can't pop us back up the navigation stack and extra level like that. So I had to dig into the series, select the right episode and delete it - more work, no benefit. [And the symbols for Delete and Lock episode don't match anything on my remote - can figure out that the DEL buttons deletes, but no idea what I need to press for Lock]

Let's have a look at scheduled recordings (the select between the two areas is better at the top than bottom +1 point there). Arghh! More picture mess - and with the old problem of a double entry for a new series record it looks even worse - daft big tile at 1 per page here as well. Why? What purpose does that emphasis provide on a dynamic page such as page 2 of next recordings?

The picture tiles all feel too tightly packed together too - which makes visually separating them even harder, but that's like discussing an ingrowing toe nail on a gangrenous leg.

Let's have a look at the 'Players and Apps' menu entry that has gained emphasis by now being what I need to skip over when getting to MyTV - Arrgh - my eyes! Put some space between the logos please! You must understand how hard it is to separate the images when they are pixel packed and blend into each other? Not like there are so many you are short of space - and having mentioned that why bother with a whole other page for the 'Apps' (you know - all three of them). And Mr. Big Tile didn't get an outing here??

Settings - err, yeah. Old one wasn't great was it, but a top level of over large icons that flow out of the page isn't a lot better than the previous carousel. Individual pages seem a bit slower to open, but meh - shouldn't need to be in the settings anyway if the system works well.

Mini-guide for MyTv - found this, nice linear list of programs - could solve the horrible picture wall, and you get the current TV behind - whoops: appears to not acknowledge series recordings and just play the latest episode.... joy. Oh and it's limited to just the most recent recordings, not all.

In summary this update appears to be have been designed by someone who doesn't really use one of these boxes. They've certainly not got an extensive library of recordings, with multiple episodes of multiple series. They are seriously lacking in UX design knowledge too - bad navigation paths, more button presses needed to get to key areas, navigation stack breakages too.

Performance of on box operations doesn't seem to have improved either, and the whole UI still looks like it is designed for a small screen running at 720p rather than a big 1080p screen - overly large boxes/images - which are often then crashed right into each other as well.

Oh and releasing without 'hide channel' - WTF3? How hard can that be to add in? What sort of crazy build schedule had that as 'sod it, ship this and we'll fix it later'???

Let's hope the promised 'we can upgrade this quickly' now comes to fruition and some of the damage can be undone. Would be even better if any new feature that justified the change would appear....

Final thought: Foisting this on people as a fait accompli without the option to revert is grim. What % of your user base will have even heard this update was happening? I'm the sort of geek that fills in registration forms and follows this stuff, but I bet for 90%+ the first they'll know about is there box has irreversibly changed.

Wow, that was very detailed but none the less very accurate. Sadly it may fall on deaf ears as far as customer support is concerned. However, with all the many others whom have commented similar feedback we can only hope the masses may have a loud enough voice.

Apparently I have just won 250 smarty points for my comment, can I redeem them for an undo on the update? Not sure what I need them for otherwise!

Are you referring to this TT forum comment from an OCE? -

"The good news is we are exploring the introduction of the list view for recordings and we will bring back the hide channels feature but this will likely land in Feb or March.
One of the reasons for the image led UI is throughout testing customers actually cited it was easier to find their shows hence making the whole of the UI image led. We also have some exciting enhancements to My TV which is really just at the starting point. We want to add continue watching and bookmarking in the next 3-6 months which will make My TV and much more useful area of the experience. Beyond that we are planning to bring the subscriptions (boosts) into this area too so you have a one stop shop for the stuff you want to watch but that is a little way off right now."

How many people exactly stated that they prefer the busy confusing tiles, to a clear written list which could be listed in date or alphabetical order? After reading through other customer comments, it appears NO ONE likes them, so what was the average age of the people who preferred the tiles? 10yrs old !!!

Not quite NO ONE; Daniel likes them :-)

But expect this forum to self-select for Listers even worse than the people on YouView test panels asked to make an objective choice between the 'old, out-moded' CurrentGen and the 'bright new shiny' NextGen.

Or more likely, asked to choose between this tiles presentation and that tiles presentation; whatever the outcome, YouView could claim, "Hey, everybody likes the tiles" :-)

Well I'm somebody and I hate them. So that rules out the 'everybody' assumption. Still, as long as Daniel is happy that's what counts.

I have created a new account on this site purely to express my outrage (especially as regards the new supposed enhanced MyTV section ) at what has turned a superb user interface into a pile of poo.

Reading this thread, many others have already eloquently identified a morass of issues with which I heartily agree and I intend to offer no more comment beyond give me my old software back and I want to cry .....

I must take exception to the comment likening the NextGen update to a 'pile of poo'. Taking a poo can often be a pleasurable experience (especially if it's a one wiper) and relieves oneself of built up pressure.. Using this UI is neither pleasurable or relaxing.

Yes, but taking a dump should be confined to the development phase of the software....

I LOVED my You View box. I thought it WAS perfect. Now its completely changed and I hate it.

    Please return:

    1) List of recorded programmes not tiles

    2) When I have finished watching a recording, take me back to where it is the list so I can delete it. I now have to find it all over again to delete it

    3) This box WAS perfect and simple for the elderly. Now its really difficult to read & use. Not intuitive.

    4) Map the clicks back to how it was before. The actions have changed & dont make sense.

    5) Give us the option to put it back as it was. This isnt the box I bought. Highly dissatisfied. You have delivered us half a product thats not been tested well.
    6) On the Guide, when I get to the bottom of the list, go back to channel 1. Dont stop at the end of the list!
    7) I have lost some channels & Im frightened to use the " unhide" function because it says "once you unhide, you cant hide again". Millions of subscribtion channels im not subscribed to cluttering my list.

    Thanks

Like so many others on here, I joined purely to voice my opinion on the monumentally terrible changes that have been forced upon me as a user.

I bought my Humax box after careful consideration and testing in John Lewis. Many of the features that I specifically bought the box for (such as alphabetic sorting of a text list of recordings) have been removed. I find it unbelievable that YouView do not allow the users access to re-flash the old firmware back onto the boxes that they bought. At least when MS foisted the "upgrade" to Win10, they allowed users to revert back to Win7 if they wanted.

I also find it unbelievable that YouView's response to all their customers' feedback is: "La, la, la, we can't hear you. A few people in our office thought it was great, so that's all that matters".

There are so many things that have turned my Humax box from something that was frankly perfect, into what is now a TERRIBLE USER EXPERIENCE. All of the below are due to the update that YouView forced upon it without my consent:

    1. In MyView, we have Pictures, with less words.
This is by far the worst update. (As voiced by MANY others). We are not in playschool. We can read. We want words, not pictures. Where you have put words, we do not get the full programme title. As most new programmes now begin with "New: ", the few words that we do get are no use, as you have to click on each picture to read what the programme is.

    2. YouView have removed the ability to sort recordings alphabetically.
We can't even attempt to get around the lack of useful programme description (as per my point 1) because YouView removed alphabetic sorting. Why did YouView remove this useful feature?

    3. YouView now does not automatically find alternative programmes if it detects a clash when you attempt to record 3 programmes at once.
Previously, the box would suggest an alternate time if I attempted to record 3 things at once. Now it does not do this. So now one has to manually search through all the other "+1" or "+24" or other "repeats" channels in an attempt to find a copy of the programme that you are trying to record that clashes. Another very useful feature has been taken away. Why did YouView remove this feature?

    4. If you have a series recorded, and click on the picture to open up the "folder", the default landing position is on the newest recording, with no shortcut to get to the earliest recording.
Nobody watches a series backwards. So you have to click through all the recorded episodes to get to the earliest recorded programme in the series. There is no shortcut to get to the earliest recorded programme in the series. Previously, there was. You've added countless more clicks to get to where we want to be. Why did YouView remove this feature?

    5. When Playing a Series Recorded programme, pressing Stop does not take you back to the Picture of the programme you were watching.
When you've finished watching an episode of a recorded series and want to delete it, on pressing Stop, it takes you to the picture representing the entire series. So then, you click on that picture, then manually click through ALL the episodes that have been recorded just to get to the episode that you were watching, just to be able to delete it. Previously, the box would default to land on the programme episode that you were just watching, so you could instantly delete it. (Or carry on watching it at a later time). Now we have so many more unnecessary navigation clicks to perform. Why did YouView remove this feature?

    6. The box does not offer you the HD option when you click to record a programme on an SD channel.
It's bad enough we can't remove or re-order the channels. Now if you want to record HD, you have to either know the channel reference number for the HD version, or scroll through tens of channels and press record. Why did YouView remove this feature?

    7. If you set a Series Record for a specific series, the box will record ALL episodes of ALL OTHER series of that programme on any channel
For example, if you select to Series Record "GPs behind closed doors", which currently has 1 new episode per week, the Humax will record all old episodes of "GPs behind closed doors" from old series repeats that are shown daily on other channels. So now I have to delete 6 of the 7 recordings, as they are NOT from the current series that I'm interested in. Series Recording is really messed up. Clearly it was not tested by YouView.

    8. YouView removed the ability to "cycle" through pages of recorded programs.
If you get to the last page and want to go back to the first page, you have to click back through all the pages that you've just been through, rather than just clicking again to get from the last page to the first page. Again, YouView has introduced countless more unnecessary clicks. They removed the ability to go from the last page of recordings straight to the first page. Why did YouView remove this feature?

    9. The Black Border that appears at the bottom of the screen when navigating in a recording is very intrusive.
9a.  - When you fast forward through a recording, the black box can obscure pertinent information in the picture. Most programmes in England have 2 minutes at the very beginning of the program where they show you what they're about to show you in a "what's happening in this episode" type montage. I find this pointless, so I like to fast forward through it. It's normally easy to see where the program actually starts, because you see the program title. However now the black bar is obscuring the programme title, so I can't spot that the programme has actually started in earnest. An example of this is "The Secret Lives of 5 Year Olds".

9b. - I often need to use subtitles. The black bar obscures subtitles. If you click the Play button to see how far through a recorded programme you are, the black bar completely obscures the subtitles. So then you have to rewind the programme to see the subtitles that YouView obscured.

With all these woeful, downgrade, painfully annoying features in the new "NextGen" firmware, I do wonder if any YouView employees actually use YouView equipment in their own homes. I for one am considering getting rid of the box, as it's become thoroughly unpleasant to use in every way. And that's a real shame, as when I bought it, it did everything I needed, and did it well.

It seems that YouView see this "NextGen" software as the bees' knees. They even have the laughable gall to call it a software "Upgrade". If their honest opinion is that this user experience is an upgrade to what we had on the "OldGen" firmware, then really that is a very, very bad outlook for the future for YouView customers.

I cant agree with you more on all your points. i hope something gets done about it or they have lost my custom

    Thanks

I don't think you're in any position to say that Daniel, sure tiles are staying but lists ... who knows.

Hi Tim I think it's pretty obvious it's not going to happen. If it was so easy to incode 2 uis into next gen don't you think it would have been included by now. I can't see youviews shareholders agreeing that its good value for money.

Do you really think Youview shareholders get involved in the minutiae of whether there are lists or not on their STBs? Come on!

If it was so easy to code hide channels, EPG wraparound and jump to time in NextGen don't you think they would have been included by now?

    Hi Christine,

Thank you for taking the time to feedback and we'll try our best to answer all your feedback.

    1) We've just recently announced an update on our progress in MyTV. We've made some changes to the tiles to make them easier to view and use. I know it's not the list you're asking for, but hope that when the changes come it will improve your experience.

    2) In the same announcement, we've mentioned we will land you on the first recording episode in the series folder. This should help for now.

    3) We have some accessibility features that you could take advantage of. You can change the colour scheme to High Contrast to make it easier to read. You can also remove the background transparencies to make the menus less distracting

    7) Edit channels is feature we are looking to re-debut. If you've lost channels you think weren't hidden, you could always try re-tuning your box.

I hope these answers can help you use Next Gen and if you have any other feedback please feel free to let us know.

As you no doubt aware accessibility and inclusion are core objectives of some if not all of the shareholders in youview eg BBC .As I have previously stated a friend who is sight impaired could easily use the recording lists but cannot manage the tiles. So i requested on two previous occasions and failed to get any response from youview on which organisations/ agencies ie RNIB were consulted on these changes so perhaps now you may be able or willing to let us know ?Cosmetic changes to tiles will be no good for my friend and only a return to lists would enable them to use the machine again . They are not against tiles for those who prefer them but there should be a list option for those who can't manage them .
So for the final time can you please let us know which organisations/agencies ie RNIB were consulted over these imposed changes.
    Thanking you in anticipation.

A very relevant question I think especially as there is a user base of maybe 3million & not all would have 20/20 vision.

And as the horrendous number of online complaints show, even those who CAN see them clearly, are very much against the new presentation.

Update 27.46 came in without me saying yay/nay which seems a bit off since it's a major change. I miss the box upper left with the channel preview but my major gripe is reserved for the recordings list with those little confusing images and incomplete text. Can I *please* have a simple text list of my recordings. If I had the option I'd revert to the old software simply on this issue. But I don't have the option - see above for installation/imposition without permission. I do like the other features I've seen though - clearer settings options & much better contrast of text to background in listings spring to mind . One difficulty I'm having is that BT player doesn't seem to be working at all - simply "loading..." followed by a blank screen when it's selected. I have BT as ISP but I don't have a subscription to BT tv, which might be the problem. Please keep the updates coming!

Paul, I have to totally agree with you. Unfortunately, I doubt they are listening to the avalanche of complaints.

    Sanj,

Thank you for letting us know about these welcome changes. The one about landing on the first episode rather than the last will be a huge improvement. The one about changing the tiles will be a tiny improvement.

What I don't quite understand is that you acknowledge in this message that people (lots of them, I might add) are asking for the list view back, yet this is not what you have given us. Instead you have just made the tile view slightly more sensible. If you (or YouView) understand that a majority of users are asking for one thing, why are you giving us something different?

If you must have the tile view, why can't you also give the list view as an option? In fact here's a suggestion, give us both with the tile view as the default, and get your software to feed back to YouView what percentage of people choose to change back to the nice user-friendly list view.

Surely reinstating the list view can't be a huge development effort, your developers could have it done in a couple of evenings with some strong black coffee. Please, please, bring it back.

My elderly mother who has poor eyesight will soon (after much persuasion and all the vcrs breaking) be buying a hard drive recorder. Until this horrible update I was going to recommend that she get a Youview, now I will be telling her to get anything but.

If we were to be given the choice of going back to the list view in the next few weeks  then I might reconsider!

I found the lists difficult to use from time to time because of vision issues I have I am using next gen without the occasional annoying the wife with shouting her into the room to help find a recording. Image based software is where most set top boxes are going sign of the times.

I know just what can be done in software. I write software myself, including web based interfaces. It all depends on how well the code is written. Good modular code with decent parameter definitions should not be difficult to add features to. There will already be functions for retrieving the data for the tile view so these can be re-used for a new view that shows up as a list.

Someone else's code is a different matter. All depends on how well they documented it.

Redchiz, in what way is sydney's comment even slightly offensive? Critical maybe, but certainly not offensive.
