They told me by email they would respond to what was posted in this thread - they've ignored it.  All the issues remain about removing functionality and press ganging existing customers to be beta site testers against their will

So as I promised I went and bought another Sky Box - was that what you wanted BT?

And my mobile phone contract was moved to Sky - was that what you wanted BT?

The broadband and phone will move too when I get to a break point as I now have a real insight into how BT/Youview intend to treat customers.  Or BT/Youview you could do the right thing by posting an apology on this forum, commit to restore lost functionality within weeks and give updates.

    Ball's in your court BT/Youview

'I didn't think you could buy a Sky box?"

And you conclude that that is the most important message to challenge amongst everything else stevek posted?!

(Well done stevek - committing to your principals. )

    BT aren't listening on here.

I hope you have posted your comment on the BT TV forum as well?

Unless YouView get an ongoing slice of all BT TV revenue, your change of platform will have zero financial impact on them.

If NextGen was hitting YouView on the bottom line, they might be more concerned, but it isn't, not in any significant way.

BT will always be considering who should be their platform next year and the year after and whoever Youview is they will be well aware of that

yes of course it'll be the same platform in 50 years time (not)

So now you've conceded the principle it just becomes a question of when.

And what we have now is BT paying good money to Youview for a giveaway box that doesn't have some obvious functionality that all the other platforms have and have had for years and to be blunt won't be attracting much new business to them because it's so irritating to use compared to Sky HS, Sky Q, TiVo etc.

Dyed in the wool Sky haters will of course argue different

Got that all wrong, Steve K. BT had their own BT Vision box, but gave it up, and didn't develop a new one, and pinned their colours to the YouView mast, as providing all the unique things they needed (e.g. multicast) to support the triple-play options they felt they needed going forward.

And there seems to be this myth out there that YouView went off on a trip of their own developing NextGen, and then dragged BT, and TalkTalk, kicking and screaming, along with them.

This couldn't be further from the truth, which is almost diametrically opposite to that supposition.

BT are a shareholders / partner in youview so they are unlikely to be going anywhere fast. While I know that you are aware of this fact VM in all honesty I am not sure if Steve is. At least his posts have come across as someone who don't know youviews structure to me.

That's an easy hit, Visionman, though I will wait and see if Steve K knows his stuff by listing such functionality and the rival devices that possess it.

More to the point is what other boxes possess the particular features that BT rely on, and would be available for BT to base their solution on? And why an obvious rival to YouView, apparently, went nowhere?

Including commercial as well as technical considerations, of course - BT could hardly use Sky boxes :-)

FUD has to be spread from a plausible baseline, and there isn't one here.

    Have already stated it
    - removed ability to set a start from time when replaying a recording
    - removed ability to see how much time is left on the live TV pause buffer
    - removed ability to see (in a list) which season recordings have the most episodes to indicate which to delete first to get disk space back

    Not forgetting the pre-existing bugs
    -  inability to stop the recorder going into standby overnight meaning you wake to no live TV buffer
    - inability to download 'catch up TV' programmes in the background so (a) live TV isn't interrupted and (b) you can view them as peer recordings

Sky does all of those ^ and even my ancient Mk 1 TiVo does all except the catch up TV

The BT box always was poor, now it's worse

How strange that in the real world I've used my Sky Box to watch BT Sport for years.

Of course that brings up the question why would I do that if my BT/Youview box was anything like comparable to a Sky Box?

I think we all know the answer.  And with 27.50 they made it even more emphatic

First time I've heard a missing feature called a bug.

Is it a bug that the YouView box can't make me a cup of tea?

Because it's useful to have a third recorder and especially one that is independent of a Satellite signal that can be disrupted by solid rain. The skip forward and skip back functions are still good (Sky does not do that, but ancient TiVo does)

BT/Youview was (past tense) my default recorder for free to air content, it was a big reason I stayed with BT

I find it difficult to understand why some here defend the deleting of functions without customers permission as if that's a fair way of doing business

The other weird thing is regarding the absence of two features that are slated for early return, and the lack of support for a truly bizarre way of deciding what to delete (clue: if you want an hour or two back, there's no need to delete eighteen of them, much less to know that without that guidance, you might only delete a series with a mere eight or nine episodes) as serious reasons why BT might be thinking of abandoning YouView boxes.

It doesn't work like that :-)

@Steve K I can't see anyone here defending any loss of functionality at all, far from it. I think we are all somewhat averse to simple deprecation without appreciation of all the facts,  or twisting words to suit ones own agenda though, whichever direction they may come from.

All platforms have functionality issues. But they do all start from a different premise.

BTW as someone who has recently found themselves grappling anew with Sky on behalf of another there is a way to skip, but as not as neatly, obviously and tidily as with YouView.

Yes, YouView is constantly testing updates and rolling them out when they are satisfied they are ready, I could tell you more, but I'd have to shoot you. ;)
