This needs rolling back or at least an option to have a text based view. This icon based design might work well on a tablet but it's terrible on a tv. Might have to drag the old sky box out of the garage in the meantime.
Well, if you are not subscribed to Sky then it won't work as a PVR. And if you decide to renew your subscription to Sky they may ask you to migrate to SkyQ and, guess what...?
Been pondering going back to sky anyway and this has just forced my hand. It's a shame but they've turned a useful piece of kit into a mess. Just don't understand why they have felt the need to not even give us an option to have the same features but using the old layout. It's like they are dumbing the interface down to the lowest common denominator.

I feel your angst, but like so many others before you I wonder what all these other devices are in your life that give you these options? I am not suggesting you accept without question of course not. And if you find the changes utterly insufferable then you must of course make a change yourself, as is your prerogative. Once you have done that though, please let us know which platform brings you the options which you crave.

It's simple. I crave what I had which was great. Why knacker something up that was working fine and replace it with an inferior product that lacks the functionality of its predecessor and with no option to revert? I simply want what I had. It's why I bought it.

Never heard of anyone buying a Ford Mondeo then expecting Ford to come and convert it to a Ford Ka (or Cortina for a real comparison). Why should we expect the same with our home devices.

Hi Zesti, you will obviously have to find something else then, apologies for the tough love. But I don't recall addressing my remarks to you.
Has anyone spoken to BT about cancelling their package as a result of this change? just wondered what sort of line they tow or offers they make
Seriously? On what grounds?
And why exactly wouldnt BT have a response or comment to a customer complaining about the usability/change to their box? They may not offer or do anything about but they will surely have a response (if nothing else than read out some T&C's saying they can do what they want). That is, after all, what Chris1981 was wondering (as in "what sort of line they tow").
(Personally I strongly doubt BT will take any responsibility and that its Youview that takes the ownership - I cant see Youview making 2 completely different interfaces without a SERIOUS financial cost by BT to do so.) I doubt BT will lose any significant custom as a result of this as most people go to them because of the TV package (pricing and programs available) and not because they are choosing it as a Youview platform (snd BT already have the money from the customer in form of a fixed agreement/contract to which the customer must pay out on). However, people choosing the Youview platform (like me), whether it be on the BT box just the generic boxes, over Freesat, Freeplay or Sky's Freesat (my former choice) after reviewing the UI and basing it on it definitely have a reason to grumble and can vote with their feet. BUT..... as it is a subscription free service, and that the money has already been paid when buying the box in the first place, Youview wouldnt notice any difference (they've already had the money). Conclusion: these changes and any commitments (past or future) to changes by Youview are all on the responsibility of Youview and the understanding of what THEY THINK people would like to see (and they end user just has to 'suck it up'). But sadly, this time, they got that VERY wrong (in my opinion).
Has anyone spoken to BT about cancelling their package as a result of this change? just wondered what sort of line they tow or offers they make
No, Grunders. This change has been planned for years, as YouView knew the the technological changes to make it possible (meaning HTML5) were coming. YouView Freview Play Freetime from Freesat All now use HTML5 and all use tiles as well. A fact not often known is that they are all also compatible with HbbTV 2.0. Which where the birth of YouView is concerned, is ironic, where convergence is concerned. I am unclear as to what Sky Q and the new 4K Virgin V6 uses. Q have also switched to tiles (with many haters), though the new 4K V6 has stuck to a list view but has no 4K content on it. I feel sorry for VM in this regard, as at the moment the other 2 platforms are guarding their 4K content jealously. Mind you, Virgin are, due to financial constraints, still using MHEG-2 and not MHEG4, which even Freeview HD uses. I'm not aware that one can broadcast 4K and HDR content over an MHEG-2 network? Surely not?
I'm now happy with the disagree icon, because its gone.
It's just plain awful. I've lost count of the amount of times I've deleted recording accidentally because on a series multi-record no longer going back to the episode you just watched.... even 'locking' the recording no linger seems to make a difference
Bring back the old 'list' view and the in screen window showing the watched programme while we are in the Guide or My TV
Additionally, I see people defending the 'testing' of the new UI. I test software for a living and while it seems the functionality may have been tested extensively, the usability of it has not. Where was the User Experience testing? If this was done, I can only imagine it was done by people not used to the old platform so they had nothing to compare to.
Quite honestly, by trying to 'Keep Up With The Jones's', BT have made a huge gaff here.

If you have tested so much you should know that although you can put forward the issues, for many reasons these are not always implemented. Blaming the testers for not spotting issues and raising them is both ignorant and plain wrong....
If you do testing so much why have you not put your name forward and tested this, everybody has had an opportunity to contribute. Don't not bother and them have the gall to blame others for the output....
There are many commercial reasons why some things are noted but put in a roadmap (that can well be after launch) to be implemented.

Testing is performed to confirm the meeting of a requirement set at a different level, I can assure you as a tester that any questions regarding usability raised on some of the projects I've dealt with (not youview) are generally ignored as the decision is already made. Testing is nothing to do with product design!

Thats a ludicrous statement.
1, He didnt blame the testers, he blamed Youview for not commiting enough to the testing suite (ie, User Experience) or responding for what the testers found.
2, Just because someone complains about the software they have been lumbered with, and because they have a day job of being a tester, it doesnt mean that they should put their name forward and test in order to have a right ro complain. I have a car and I expect it to be tested extensively before it is sold to me by Ford. If I then crash because of faulty brake manufauring I do not expect them to say "If you want to complain then you should have been a tester for us then!" THEY are responsible for the development and testing before imposing it on the masses, not the end user. If the masses then complain then they havent committed enough to the testing or its results.

the issue seems more that some people are so used to routinely pressing buttons that they do so without enough attention to what they are actually authorising. There is a tendency to blame others for what ultimately is their own actions.

Maybe there is an element of this. But there is also an argument for 'usability'. It makes sense that after watching a program you may choose then to delete it. Given there is a DELETE button, and that if you are going to immediately delete something after watching something you are more likely wanting to delete that actual program before any other program then it stands to reason that the first default offering would be that program (just like it was previously). Irrespective of whether you 'are used to' the previous method this is still a bad design (as first time users of Youview will also find).

Grinders ...unfortunately the Delete button is also in use as the subtitles on/Off button on the remote so you need to make sure that you do not introduce the risk of. Inadvertent deletion due to switch subtitles on or off. Yes navigation alternatives can be considered but ultimately people have to correctly navigate and be careful that they delete the right item.

Chris - thank you in being so rude with your reply and calling into question my ability as a career tester. I quite clearly stated that it seems that the functionality was tested extensively but this will only make sure the application works as per spec. However, it seems that structured User Experience testing in dedicated labs may not have been done adequately. If it was, then it should be done with users of both old versions of YouView and people new to it. However, as also stated by another correspondent, design issues are rarely fixed due to time constraints and budget.

Added to which it was first TalkTalk and then BT, who had been working on their own Players/areas for NextGen in conjunction with YouView for quite a while back (as we may deduce from the change of paradigm, and yet TT and BT had their own sections ready for Day 1) who pushed for the launch.
If you have the fond but foundationless hope that YouView sprang NextGen on its partners as the same sort of surprise you got when they sprang it on an unwaiting world, think again.
And BT, at least, are not in the business of losing revenue, as they would if its users deserted the platform in droves - they have all those footy rights to pay for - so I think you will find they have an ear open for the criticisms of NextGen, just as YouView do.

Darren do you have more than one Youview box connected ?
I'm no longer getting an engineer they have placed an order to send me a new Youview box for free as BT guy on web chat seems to think my G4 box maybe faulty. Will see if I can get someone to reset my account. Also thanks for the links.

A soft reset of the box and a reset up of channels seems to have temp solved the problem but I know the problem may come back if I even want to use the BT player. I have also posted over on the BT forums. In the last day or 2 I have started to have mixed feelings about BT customer service.
