I've checked this with Vanilla and unfortunately it's not possible to get notifications for reactions.
I'm amazed - I'd say that was quite a basic requirement.

Managed to get a mobile screenshot of this from our test site. It adds an extra space to fit in the reactions.
@sarah I think it looks ok but I can't speak for others. Also what do you think of it?

    @Daniel
Personally I'm not a fan of this view as I feel it's a bit busy and comes across a little cluttered (particularly on mobile) when we've already got the reactions taking up a couple of lines. It could also be a bit confusing to look at as a new user navigating the forum.

I would say leave it then if confusing new users is a possibility. I would like to think we can encourage new users to return to the forum.

Also it's possible to see the reactions in desktop view on a mobile phone from the profile page as I have tried it and you can see who left the reaction as well.

All references I can find actually suggest Canada. Vanilla have a head office in Montreal and Ottawa.

It's good that you flagged the Chinese writing though so youview can investigate the problem.

I’ve briefly seen 4 empty white-outlined squares appear instead of the expected icons.

i would hazard a guess that they are implemented as glyphs in a font, and Vanilla sometimes has a shaky grasp of which font to use to get them  :p

When one starts typing a Comment, the options are -
'Preview', 'Save Draft' and 'Post Comment'. But a fourth needs to be added - 'Cancel', in case a user changes their mind to not post it.
I'm now happy with the disagree icon, because its gone.
  • DanielDaniel Member, Super User Posts: 1,979 ✭✭✭
@Visionman Definitely. I have had this happen a few times but when I returned to the thread at a later time I have had to manually erase a saved draft first.
  • jimbjimb Member, Super User Posts: 1,425 ✭✭✭
    @Visionman  @Daniel  I quite agree.
You need to be able to cancel a post and thus stop it raising its ugly head again.

Anyone having problems with drafts, or drafts re appearing in a thread the easiest way to get rid of them is from your drafts menu available from the HOME view right hand panel :).

    John.

EDIT - for clarity if you don't have any saved drafts you wont have the "My Drafts" link. :)

You can at least make a posting that you have started, but not yet actually posted, go away, though the procedure(s), as outlined above, are not very streamlined.

But when I have posted something which I have come to realise is mindbendingly stupid, as I do from time to time, and I would like to make it go away, the best I can do is to Edit the posting down to a single character, or some anodyne placeholder.

i can’t Cancel it, and I can’t make it blank.

This is where I miss Cancel.

It's a bit of an irritant but not unique to this forum or Vanilla.  On a forum I mod (uses Zetaboards hosting) if someone edits down an undesired post to a single character or something that obviously says it's not wanted then I do the deletion for them

Maybe Sarah or Phil could do same here please

    Hi all,

Just a quite update on the feedback received so far:

    • Pagination at the top as well as the bottom of the page - This was quite a quick fix thanks to @Mark so it should now show on all threads in the community
    • Email notifications are not mobile friendly - We're looking into this at the moment to see what we can do to customise the email format a bit more. Vanilla have raised a ticket about the example we got on the Android device where it was showing up unusually big
    • Some redirects are not working - We've raised this with Vanilla. I feel this may be because it truncates the titles but will update once I know more
    • iPad using return button does not start the new line with a capital letter - Raised with Vanilla
    • Change to UK date format - I rasied this with Vanilla and this has now been fixed as of this afternoon :)
    • Can't delete the quote box if you remove the text after quoting someone (without deleting the draft) - Vanilla have raised a ticket about this
    • Users can't change their own names - Vanilla looking into this for us
    • Reactions on mobile devices - Not viewable on all mobile devices unfortunately. The alternative view is too busy/cluttered for us to implement
    • Notifications for reactions - This is not possible to do, sorry!
    • There is no cancel button - Raised with Vanilla
    • Some password reset emails are not being received - Raised this with Vanilla however if you are reading this and are having this issue, please email [email protected] and I can manually reset it for you :)
I'll update once I get any more info on these points. Thanks for raising them!

Nice one Sarah, keep up the good work. There are bound to be a few glitches along the way, this doesn't detract from the fact that the new forum is a big improvement overall.   B)

@Sarah Just to update I am only having the large email issue in Gmail. I downloaded the outlook app and put my forum account on my Hotmail address and everything was fine with the emails. I can drop the community email address some screenshots if you want some examples.
  • Android notification emails working fine for me. I use Yahoo Mail app.
  • DanielDaniel Member, Super User Posts: 1,979 ✭✭✭
It's looking like this issue at present is just with Gmail then.
  • WayneWayne Member Posts: 82 ✭✭
Thought I'd give the Outlook app a try on Android.

All of the message fits on the screen, though the comment font is relatively small and not easy to read without zooming in.

Ideally, I should be able to easily read the entire message, without having to zoom in/out or scroll horizontally.

@Wayne For someone with not the best of vision I'm happy with how outlook looks on my mobile. If the text is small on some phones it's certainly a issue because I dare say people with worse vision than myself will still use a mobile phone and can do without small text.

Can you let me know the phone model you are using and the software version it's on as well? I can forward this onto Vanilla to add to their ticket regarding this issue :)

    Hello @Sarah

Another issue I have just noticed is notifications / email alerts for threads that I had participated in on the old GetSat community have not been carried forward to Vanilla.

Not a biggie as I can bookmark the ones I'm still interested in - or even just add a new post in the thread.

    John.

@Sarah It's a Sony Xperia L1. I have the dual SIM version. Android version 7.0

Do you want the screen shots sending as well?

Sure, I think it'd be useful to have some other examples :)

I like the 'Home' tab at the bottom of each thread which takes you directly back to the forum main page.

Nice. But I’ve just been tapping the omnipresent youview / Community, top left, to achieve the same end.

Not Chinese, but a definite font failure - see all the square boxes that ought to be icons:-

I don’t like the way timestamps from postings as recent as yesterday lose the hh:mm

Can this be shown, at least on the posting itself if not on the Home Page, for a bit longer - three days to a week, say?

On GetSat, IIRC, PC users could touch the displayed timestamp and see the exact date/time, though iPad users couldn’t.

On here, touching the timestamp shows me if the post has been edited, which is useful, but not as much as showing the actual date/time.

    Hi all,

I'm back with some more updates from the feedback we've received so far:

    - The time difference issue raised by @Andy_H should now be resolved. This was due to the guest/incognito time defaulting to a different time so we've now set it to London time.

    - We've tweaked the wording in the notification emails when someone starts a new topic from '[username]has started a discussion: [title]' to '[username] started a new topic in [Category]: Title'. This was done to make the topic category a little clearer in the notification emails.

    - Resolved an issue where some users were not receiving password reset emails.

    - Some topic titles are being truncated, this is with Vanilla to look into at the moment.

    - Usernames changing in quotes when the user has changed their username is something they're looking into as a development project so I wouldn't bank on it appearing anytime soon but they are aware of it.

    - The cancel button is not something in the works at the moment so it's not possible to implement at this time I'm afraid. There seems to be a bit of wire crossing between writing a post and wanting to cancel it and submitting a post and then wanting to remove it.
Users can delete their drafts in from the drafts folder by clicking the 'x' in the corner of each draft. The drafts folder will only appear if you have drafts so if you don't have it showing on your front page, it means you have no saved drafts.
There is a feature called 'Stop Auto Draft' which is something we could implement however this would prevent all users from using the draft feature. We feel that having drafts is useful to users so it's not something we think should be removed.
I'm going to enquire further to see if it's possible to add a rule somewhere that if a user selects all the text and deletes it that the draft also gets deleted or if there can be a delete draft button but I'm not sure how doable this is for Vanilla.
If you want to have your post removed, I'd suggest that you go into the post to edit it down to one character and then report it. This way we're aware sooner that you want it removed so we can then remove it for you.

    - The icon issue is being looked into at the moment, it seems to be some sort of rendering issue. Are the icons and font always like this when you use the community @Roy

    - I'm still waiting to hear back from Vanilla regarding users not receiving notification for new posts in threads which they took part in before the migration.

Will keep you posted when I have more information back from Vanilla :)

    Thanks,
    Sarah
