Thanks for the update @Sarah. Nice to see things are getting resolved. I note Roy has moved up the leader board and seems to have now got his missing points :)

I don’t like the way timestamps from postings as recent as yesterday lose the hh:mm

Can this be shown, at least on the posting itself if not on the Home Page, for a bit longer - three days to a week, say?

On GetSat, IIRC, PC users could touch the displayed timestamp and see the exact date/time, though iPad users couldn’t.

On here, touching the timestamp shows me if the post has been edited, which is useful, but not as much as showing the actual date/time.
    @Roy

For me, using a computer, the timestamp appears as a tool tip if you Mouse Over (hover) over the time stamp. In your Chinese post above I get October 8, 2017 3:10PM. How well this works on an i thingy I don't know. For those of us with android devices Mouse Over doesn't really work at all  :'(

I was going to do a screen dump for you, but unfortunately the act of printing the screen dismisses the tool tip :(

    John

EDIT:- OK I lied, here's the screen dump:-

No, @Sarah, the little squares were momentary, and indeed had reverted to the correct presentation when I returned to the Home Page after posting that screenshot,

    Weird.

On my iPad, touching the timestamp, or even just touching the place to the right where the Edited: message will appear if the post was edited, makes such an Edited: appear.

I can use the Hover Tooltip on this laptop if I use the mouse, but it does not work via the touchscreen interface.

In this world of ubiquitous touchscreen devices, I think it is about time that web designers stopped relying on 'hover' :(

Notice above that I could not be assed to quote the whole of Anaglypta's post, and then edit it down to just the bit I wanted to reply to (immensely valuable though the rest of the post was, in situ).

I thought I might be able to circumvent this by just highlighting the bit I wanted to quote, and then pressing Quote, but no, it still took the whole thing.

(Into a Draft that a frantic search of the How To told me was deletable only by clicking on a miniscule gray 'x' in the top corner where I never looked - is it possible this X could please be made more prominent?)

Anyway, could you @Sarah / Vanilla please consider selective Quoting only of highlighted text, when there is some highlighting?

    Mail Handling

Bit of a shock to see how Vanilla mails from this Forum announce themselves, with the poster's name, and I had to quickly rewrite my mail routing rules to get these new postings into my YouView folder.

Not hard, though, and a great bonus is that looking at this folder threaded (like a newsgroup) actually does thread by topic, which GetSat never did.

And it invites me to reply by email, and get my response posted that way, which I thought was great, as my own postings would then appear (I asked if we could have our own postings reflected by email from Vanilla, but they still don't).

However, an attempted reply produced this:-

Any thoughts? Are Vanilla using SPF (Sender Policy Framework?)
This is notorious for not trusting relays, like the Gradwell one I use, though Gradwell's is a properly configured secured relay, and should not be subject to this.

    Or is is something else?

Can confirm that this was an issue due to the migration and has been fixed now so all user points should be correct on their accounts!

I've raised this with Vanilla to see what they can do. I know there's a few different possibilities as we got the date changed from US format to UK (although I noticed that the hover over date is still US format which I'm chasing up) but I'll update once I know more :)

I've raised this with Vanilla however I wouldn't imagine it'd be something implementable right away. If it's something they're up for doing at least, I'm sure it'll be added in quicker than than the stickies did.

Maybe I'm not seeing it from the picture but can you explain what you mean when it invites you to reply by email? The notifications emails I have don't have anything about responding via email. Do you mean replying to the email address the notification comes from?

As far as I'm aware, you cannot reply to posts through the email although it's something I can look into. If you want to see all your posts in one place, I'd suggest going onto your profile page and clicking on your Comments to view those and Discussions for threads you have created. When on the Comment view, clicking the title at the bottom of the comment box will take you to your post in the thread.

    Thanks,
    Sarah

The emboldening is my emphasis of the relevant bit of the Vanilla-sourced email. I see the second Check it out: link is a copy of the first; maybe we are only supposed to get the second one, and not the one that holds out the hope of replying by email? Though I have seen forums that support exactly that.

On every email I have had at the bottom of the email it invites me to reply by email as seen in the picture.
  • DanielDaniel Member, Super User Posts: 1,979 ✭✭✭
I have just tried reply by email. It doesn't work and bounces back the email as undeliverable so @sarah maybe you could ask vanilla why the text is there in the emails if it doesn't work.

Thanks both, I'll check this with Vanilla to see if we can get this sorted as I can imagine it's a bit of a confusing user journey!

I found myself thinking a message was a post and then I thought I was just posting back on the forum, in fact what happened, der. Just learning about the message facility which is new, of course, with hindsight it's clear, but having just been used to email notifications for posts in the past I got caught out. So heads up is all. :)

    You lost me  :/

    if i can untangle it:-

The new thing is (private) messages, which can actually be private conversations between more than two people, and when you get such a message in your Inbox in Vanilla (maybe your YouView Inbox in Vanilla if you subscribe to more than one Vanilla forum, or maybe it’s shared?) and Reply, it goes to just their Vanilla Inboxes.

And you have now sussed this.

The usual thing is posting here in the Forum.

And the other usual thing is getting emails for threads/events you have selected earlier, as we did on GetSat, albeit the presentation of the email headers is of a different style form GetSat.

But here, as a new thing over GetSat, the emails promise we can make a direct reply by email, which will then become a posting in the Forum.

But we can’t, and we don’t know what’s broken, us not being able to, or Vanilla promising that we can, or YouView not having the feature turned on, or what?

@Roy It was my first notification of a message via email and it looks similar to a forum post. Moreover the content could have been mistaken for a forum post. And of course in the absence of messages previously I didn't know what to expect. Only some time after responding and realising that it was not in the topic I thought it was did I realise I had responded to a message rather than a post. Nothing to do with replying to the email directly.
  • SarahSarah Member Posts: 1,812 admin
    @redchiz
We should be able to change the wording to the emails like we've done previously to the new thread email notifications. It's currently '[username] has sent you a message'.
Would changing it to '[username] has sent you a private message' make it clearer to users that it's not a forum post?

    Thanks,
    Sarah
  • redchizredchiz Member, Super User Posts: 5,476 ✭✭✭
@Sarah I think it would, if it's not too much trouble.
  • Personally I find it to be clear enough at present that it's a private message but I agree that if the word 'private' were to be added it would leave the recipient in no doubt as to what it was they were receiving notification of.
  • SarahSarah Member Posts: 1,812 admin
@redchiz I'm sure it won't be too complicated to do. I'll request this now and hopefully it'll be changed soon!

    @Roy
Is replying or posting through email something you'd be keen to use? We have the option to turn the feature off or enable it correctly so that you are able to post what you want through the email however this will most likely cause yourself and others to have to re-jig their email filters again. I am happy to set up either so would be good to confirm :)

    Thanks,
    Sarah
  • DanielDaniel Member, Super User Posts: 1,979 ✭✭✭
@Sarah it would be a feature I would certainly use if it works that is.
  • redchizredchiz Member, Super User Posts: 5,476 ✭✭✭
Personally I am happy with it as it is i.e. click on the link so one can be taken straight to the topic in question, View topic might be better than Check it out on link button. Although I am curious as to how an email response would work? Either way the current wording is confusing though as it is wrong!
  • redchizredchiz Member, Super User Posts: 5,476 ✭✭✭
Ooh, and I have just noticed that you can't both Agree and High Five the same post.
  • RoyRoy Member, Super User Posts: 17,812 ✭✭✭
@Sarah I think it is more important that it does what it says it will do, even if that is achieved by removing the email option.

And I have a suspicion that emails from my aged mail software might look pretty ugly  :#

My unvarying wish, right back from the earliest days of GetSat, is to get my own postings back as emails like everybody else’s, to maintain threading and continuity in the email trail.

I agree the word 'Private' should be added. But also for another reason - to make it clear to users anything said in a PM is private and not repeatable via email/PM to others or on the open forum.
I'm now happy with the disagree icon, because its gone.

Note, though, that a PM is not necessarily one to one; while outside the forum and so like an email, it can be just like an email in that it is shared among multiple recipients.

  • Whether one to one or not it is still a PRIVATE conversation between those involved so the same rules should apply.
  • VisionmanVisionman Member, Super User Posts: 10,303 ✭✭✭
Yes. They're called conversations, which are now possible via this forum.

    Hi all,

Just to update, the wording should now read '[username] has sent you a private message' instead so hopefully it's a lot clearer for all users :)

    Thanks!
