T2100 Red Button Glitch

Steve OliverSteve Oliver Member Posts: 90 ✭✭
New box, new problem. Following my T1000 no internet debacle, I now have a new T2100 and can watch live TV again.

This morning watching BBC News I noticed a one inch long vertical line in the top right of the screen. To cut all the investigations short, turns out it is leftovers from the Press Red dialogue that appears on BBC News. When the Press Red vanishes after 20 seconds or so, it leaves this little bit of itself behind. Now, is this a glitch with my box or is anyone else getting this today, especially on a T2100? I can get rid of it by the usual pause/unpause method but would rather I didn't have to!

    Hi Steve,

Can you let me know the software version your box is currently running? You should be able to find this in Settings > Information & Reset > Software information, it'll be the number for 'Manufacturer Software'.

The T2100 box on my desk is on 29.36.0 and have not found this happening on BBC1 SD/HD or BBC News SD/HD. Have you tried it on other BBC channels to see if the same thing happens?

    Thanks,
    Sarah

    Hi Steve,
My T2000 retail box does not leave any artefacts behind when the Press Red icon disappears, or if dismissed with the "back" button.

Steve got this box off eBay, and it’s a purely BT one.

So was that ‘new’ as in unopened sealed packaging, @Steve, or just ‘new to you’?  :p

It's an (apparently) unused BT box. It updated itself when I set it up and it did still have the protective film on the front - so as best I can tell - it's not been previously used.  The remote was certainly unused. No guarantees but as far as I can tell...

Just a point on the red button, Steve. If you want it to disappear immediately, you don't have to use the pause/unpause method. You can just press the 'back' button on the remote.
I'm now happy with the disagree icon, because its gone.

Thanks Visionman, yes, unfortunately that still leaves the artefact on the screen though, the pause, unpause doesn't..

    Cheers, Steve

    Hi Sarah,

    I'm running 29.45.0. platform 4068, ISP 1116.

Difficult to try on other BBC channels as I have to find one that shows the Press Red. It happens on both SD and HD though.

    Any good?

    Thanks Steve

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for the software information. I've tried it on BBC1, BBC2, BBC4, BBC news, BBC Parliament, CBBC and CBeebies (for both SD and HD where applicable) and have so far not experienced the same issue you are referring to.

It'd be helpful if you can take a picture and attach it to your post so I can forward it onto the relevant teams so they can see exactly what happens with the Red Button tab when it disappears.

    Thanks,
    Sarah

Thanks Sarah - will do. It would help me to know that another T2100 on the same software has the same problem, or not - in which case I'll consider getting a brand new box - as it's surprisingly irritating!!  I presume someone at YV HQ can check this for me, once they know what they're looking for?!

    regards

    Hi Steve,

This is the first report we've heard of this so it's useful to have some screenshots to go on so they know exactly what you are experiencing and can test for it effectively.

If there are other users who happen upon this thread and have this issue as well, please let us know as it helps to have more cases to reference to when testing.

    Thanks!

    Hi Sarah,

Please find photos attached. Showing appearance of Press Red followed by remaining artefact after the Press Red disappears.

Would it be possible for someone to confirm whether this is a software issue please?

    Thanks

  • I've never noticed that before. That woman, I presume she's reading the news, appears to be very frightened of your camera flash  :D
Seriously though, does it disappear if you change channel or have you ever noticed the same thing on another channel without the Red Button? I only ask in case it's an image retention issue on the tv set itself or some dodgy pixels.

Lol, no flash - so it couldn't have been me!!

It absolutely disappears if you change channel, or even pause/unpause. It is caused by the Press Red and is left behind when the message times out and disappears. I can then get rid of it if I pause/unpause and make it reappear by coming back to live playing.

One more thing - this is via SCART - no idea if it will happen by HDMI but I'll try and check it.
  • SarahSarah Member Posts: 1,812 ✭✭✭
Thanks for the images Steve. It'd be helpful to know if this happens with HDMI as well but I'll raise this to see if it's a known issue with the team.

    Thanks,
    Sarah

Well that at least rules out a problem with the telly itself.

    Hi @Steve Oliver

Just to update, I've tested this with a SCART lead instead of an HDMI and have found that the line does remain if the tab times out or I press back but disappears after between 2-8 seconds rather than staying on the screen as you've mentioned.

It'd be good to know if the HDMI cable changes the outcome for you. We do tend to recommend users to use an HDMI over a SCART cable where possible as it usually provides higher picture and sound quality, especially for HD channels.

@Sarah well, that's intriguing! I wonder how come it disappears on your SCART connection - it definitely doesn't time out on mine!?

Is the software version of the box you're testing with, the same as mine?

Regrettably the TV I'm using here is an old CRT (that won't die) and has no HDMI input, otherwise be assured I'd be using HDMI :)  I am using HDMI on the other 2 YV boxes I've got!!

    Hi Steve,

The box model and software version are the same as yours. It's interesting that it doesn't time out for you, I assume you've tried leaving it to see if it disappears a few seconds after being left there?

It does feel connected to the SCART somehow as it only appeared for me when I used a SCART and after swapping back, I'm not getting any remnants of the Red Button section. How old is the TV you're using?

    Hi Sarah,

Yes, it definitely doesn't time out on mine. I left it for ages this morning. It stayed there for at least 15 minutes and then I had to go to work! I haven't yet had a chance to try the HDMI connection.

The old TV I'm using is 15 years old. Good old Toshiba. Though this issue wasn't present using exactly the same SCART connection from the T1000 I had before.

Hi Sarah, just to help, I have now tried this on another T2100 using SCART and it was exactly the same - the line stays on after the Press Red disappears. It doesn't disappear after a few seconds like yours. This other box was also on 29.45.0. It's a software issue common to all the T2100s and I hope the developers are well on their way to a fix because it's blooming annoying!! ;)

    Thanks

    Steve

I'm sorry, I don't get the point of your reply. Are you saying that because I'm the only person to report it that it's not an issue?
  • VisionmanVisionman Member, Super User Posts: 10,303 ✭✭✭
No. I'm saying your the only reported person with the issue. No offence intended.

Ok, well maybe not comment then. I'm the first to report it perhaps? Two different, completely isolated units both with the same issue. The reason it's not reported by others is probably because most people are using HDMI rather than SCART. I would be if I could.
  • VisionmanVisionman Member, Super User Posts: 10,303 ✭✭✭
    Not comment? Are you joking?

Sorry, your the only one. Which points to an individual issue with your set-up, not a platform one. I'd try changing your scart connector. Or just give your current one a wiggle.
