Netflix app connecting to youview

maybe other people know about this but I was looking at a Netflix show on my iPad and noticed an icon I hadn’t seen before. When I clicked it a pop up gave me the option to connect to my YouView box. Doing so automatically opened the Netfix app on YouView. I’ve a Humax DTR2000. Has this always been there?

Cant say I have seen this. I was staying over at my sisters last night and watching the movie Daddy Day Care on her Youview T2000 box using the Netflix app on the Youview box and ended up watching the last 25mins in bed this morning on my iPad Mini 4 and I don't remember seeing that icon you talk about.

Coo - new one on me. It’s a cast icon, top left when you ‘disturb’ full screen, and I get several options to cast to various devices, probably on the Chromecast basis, where the cast-to device picks up the stream independently of the iPad and runs with it.

I wonder if it works on Android too?

EDIT: Shows the TV also, now it is switched on.

Out of interest do you successfully connect to the Youview  box from the IPad Netflix  and control the content playing or merely launch the Netflix player on the Youview box ?

I have sen this with a IPad Netflix app and a Samsung TV Netflix app.

I have seen this with an iPad Netflix app and a Samsung TV Netflix app.
A bit of both. This morning, with our Samsung TV on, Netflix offered me that as a casting option as well (see revised screenshot, above) while I was playing, as a test, The Big Short on my iPad.

So I selected it, and the TV switched to Netflix, but came up on the ‘Who’s Watching?’ question we normally get, which made the iPad report an error.

So I chose me as watching, and tried again, and this time the film started on the TV, and paused on the iPad. But could be controlled as normal on the TV.

Except that when I switched the film to The Social Network on the iPad, to see if it could run independently, that also switched the TV to that film.

Then I powered the iPad right off, and the film stayed running on the TV.

There are various other things I could have tried, but I expect people will tell me this is normal ‘Chromecast’ behaviour, where the heavy lifting is transferred to the cast-to device, but the casting device still exerts some control.

Even though there is no actual Chrome device involved at either end, and this isn’t Miracast, where the casting device is still doing the heavy lifting, and the cast-to device is just an output display.

But whatever third thing this casting is, I have a lot of devices that seem to be in on it, and not just YouView ones.

It's using the DIAL (Discover and Launch) protocol jointly developed by YouTube and Netflix.

Hmm. I wonder if this is going to be a new scourge?

    The auspices are not good.....
