Last time I looked at Now it was in SD, stereo only and there were no subtitles. Has it improved?
  • scottscott Member, Super User Posts: 2,134 ✭✭✭
@al it has only been SD on YouView, every other device has had 720p for many years. NowTV does now have a boost pass which increases all the channels to 1080p and 5.1 surround sound (plus 50fps on some sports channels).

@Sarah Do the Hd (1080p) boosts work on retail Youview t2000 boxes?

@Joe they certainly do on the app on the BT boxes.

Edit- actually need to check this a bit more. I was going by when I added the boost the HD and 5.1 logo appeared in the description and some channels went up from the standard 128 on the stream rate to 7861. But now checking firstly I don’t see the 5.1 sound being recognised and only some streams are showing the 7861 figure. Need to check further but just going out.

Edit2 - rebooted and now getting 7830 on all the streams but still not seeing the 5.1 sound.

This is what I was getting at. Also can I get 5.1 DD and subs on the retail T2000? And finally, what is a boost exactly? Do I need to do more than just subscribe?

    Hi @scott ,
See @Ash post further up the thread for how to enable Dolby 5.1. It requires jumping through another hoop!

Re Boost... Sky are masters at extracting cash from customers, £3 for HD and Dolby. It's there amongst the various Now passes.

I honestly thought the £3 HD & Surround Sound Boost/add on was in 1080i not 'p' at 7380 Mbps? After all, 1080i is the format HD is broadcast in, even on Sky Q.
I'm now happy with the disagree icon, because its gone.

I think the source is actually 1080i on the sky box but the final output from the app will be guided by what the box is set to output it at (either upscale to 2160 or possibly interpolate to 1080p or 1080i), the fps is more important on things like the sports channels as main event, premier and f1 (recently added) should be 50fps from source and that is important.

I'm liking the box's ability to link viewed Now TV content through the 'My TV' banner bar and then be taken straight to the content within the application. Very convenient.

    Disagree,
should only be "free to view" otherwise it's clotted up with stuff you can't actually view, unless your paying for a pass.

I've been trying to use the app since launch but I'm just sticking my Roku im afraid, two fairly major differences between the two apps...

Buffering - I dont get any whatsoever on my Roku on wifi yet get loads on Youview through ethernet.
Watchlist - The Youview app only displays a couple of rows at a time yet Roku shows them all in a large panel.

Its nit-picky but is this the best place to raise these or would the NowTV community/support be the right place given its their service?

Sorry to hear that @Adam_T, I don't get any buffering on mine. As for posting, why not post for help on both?

Well this is disappointing. My wife signed up for the Entertainment and Movies passes with the boost. The picture is ... ok. The "Options and Settings" menu should be called "Search On demand and Live" because that's all it does. We stumbled across the 5.1 setting while trying to find out how to enable subtitles. After Ducking the web (that'll never catch on) and using the subtitle button there was not one thing I could find with subs after about 10 minutes searching. How can there be no subtitles anywhere?
    So we can't use this.

    Just gets better 😃
The new Sky channels (Sky Documentaries, Nature and History)
Will all be available on Now tv next month.
All are included in the entertainment pass at no extra cost.

I think Dorothy Parker had an observation about this.

But however true it sounds, I can’t see any of our Covid19 News spokespersons searching the web for information, and then announcing that they are carefully Ducking the issues 😷🤥😷😛

    @Visionman

NowTV comes in several different forms. We superusers really need more than the maximum six devices we can set up at once to cover them all.

On a NowTV stick, there is a setting for subtitles, but last time I looked, it wasn’t sticky - though it should be - and you had to turn on subtitles programme by programme, except when watching a series back to back. This is still true on the Roku stick I used for this image:-
It shows episode 9 of Season 1 of Game of Thrones, 12 minutes 30 seconds in.

When, as here on the Roku stick, and the same on the NowTV stick, I think, there are subtitles, you can get these by pausing the playing programme, whereupon you will see the options along the bottom. The rightmost one of these here is a speech bubble icon; select this, and you see the Subtitles and Audio options appear, superimposed on the video. You will usually find the subtitles Off, but you can choose a language (here only English, as is usual) and you will get subtitles that last until the end of the episode, or until you exit, whichever is sooner. If you binge-watch the next episode back to back, the subtitles will stay on for that next episode also though.

On YouView on my T2000, no subtitles option appears when I pause this same episode. On the NowTV app on the bedroom Samsung TV, on the lounge Samsung TV and on the Roku Stick, the option is present. I think it is on my iPad also, though this is giving me a spurious concurrent error at present, claiming I’m already watching on my maximum devices. I’m not, but maybe the echoes need to die out at NowTV Towers.

    EDIT: OK, here’s the iPad:-

So, basically, it looks like YouView watchers of NowTV are still being short-changed. @Sarah, care to comment?

Subtitles are available on all supported devices, except for the BT TV Box and YouView box.

My wife tried the Macbook route but subtitles only lasted a few minutes then disappeared. They all suddenly appeared at the end of the show. I assume the the roku box is pretty much the same as the nowtv stick with a couple of extra services(?) [lazy I know but losing the will with now]
