Screen is obscured when pressing, ffw, rw, pause

catwheezlecatwheezle Member Posts: 5
quite often when pressing pause its because I want to read the small print, or view some detail in the picture.  The Blacked out part at the bottom of the screen, behind the progress bar, often prevents me from doing that. It doesn't seem to really have any functionality, since the progress bar is quite clear.  Every time you pause the screen or you have to wait 10 seconds for it to clear.  It also remains blacked out the whole time its in ff or rw  meaning the rolling news headlines on 24 hour news aren't visible, so I cant scroll through just reading the titles.

@catwheezle, when paused, or whenever there is a banner across the bottom of the screen that is not actively being used, pressing the close button removes it from the screen.

    Hi catweezle,
I have been requesting this to be fixed for past 4 years! Rather annoying, hence why I do most of my current recording on other pvrs. Hopefully Youview are taking note, working on improving the interface? (Here's hoping Youview!) Totally understand your frustration. The problem is Youview have built features into bottom banner, but not really thought out this at the same time when designing.

My only suggestion is to record long 2 hour programmes i.e. This Morning onto another pvr (cheap used ones £30/40+ from Cex 2 year warranty), so that you can view parts that you might fwd, rwd through. This is what I do each day. I don't have time to watch whole programme and only want to view parts of recording. John L
Can't wait for the day when Youview get rid of the dreaded darkened banner when using fast forward/rewind recordings.

True, but that is when freezing picture. What happens when you want fast forward, rewind and still want to see bottom of picture. Try recording a 2 hour magazine programme like This Morning and see how you get on. I have been asking for this, along with other regular users. John L

I think that's what I said: on pause or when not actively being used.

Correction. When you fast forward, rewind pressing back doesn't get rid of darkened banner. I will go and try again to see. If I am wrong, I will eat my hat! John L

Steve, I have just checked. If you press close while fastfowarding, it stops programme and takes you back to my TV screen. I can prove it if you want by filming and uploading a demonstration. Doesn't solve the darkened banner problem. John L

But you are actively using it, the banner that is, so I agree with you. I was not referring to when ff or rev.

    Hi Steve,
The way I read your answer it comes across different, but nevermind, glad we agree. Hopefully more users will bother to moan about this! Have a good weekend. John L

I have recently obtained the new Arris Freesat box (for my mother, I'm not keeping it). Interestingly, or not, this too suffers from the pointless obscured screen during FF/Rew and pause. Although on this, pressing Back does clear it in either case.

While on the subject of irritations introduced by NextGen, the list v tiles debate... the Arris box has a nice compromise; when you select the Recordings screen you see a page of tiles of the latest recordings, but one click bypasses this to display all recordings in a list :)

Perhaps Youview could take a look and borrow some ideas...

    Why would it?
It has no retail outlets anymore so no new converts so obviously user numbers will only decline.
BT seem happy posing as a middle person for now tv and actively avoid even mentioning youview anymore.

than you so much, it works for me, on ff/rw AND pause the annoying blacked out part of the screen disappears - on Live TV only - not recordings.  I hate to think how much time I've wasted from not knowing this!

Yes John you're right it doesn't work on recordings, but I found it works for live tv, so that is something and also - I didn't know there was other people out there finding it as annoying as me!

     Pressing 'Back' works as well.

Hi Visionman, hope you are well.
With regards topic, this doesn't  work when you are wanting to view content when fast forwarding & rewinding. I'm sure you have found this out as well. Still very irritating. Amazes me how all the other platforms can get it right including Freesat  model I use. I can't comment on the new Arris model as mentioned by Rob P, but my Humax 1100s is brilliant. You only see a tiny band at bottom of screen that doesn't obstruct viewing pleasure showing time lapse for recording or when viewing live/pause tv. Panasonic Freeview model I use is even better without any banner.

I appreciate Youview have built icons into design, but surely this can be improved? Either turn it off or simply when fwd/rwd is used, adjust design so that banner totally disappears. How long has it been since NewGen was released? In the meantime we have to live with it or don't use the box as much. John L

I agree with this completely.  I record a lot of sports such as tennis and snooker and like to scan through the recordings quickly and stop at e.g. break points in tennis or when nearing frame ball in snooker. However, the on screen info during FFWD always seems to obscure the scores making it very awkward to use Youview for this purpose.
Can we get a feature request in for a device setting that disables the on screen info completely or at the very least re-positions it at the top of the screen instead of the bottom?

    Hi gxw,
Welcome aboard the Youview forum. Hope you enjoy contributing with ideas, suggestions and problems. Yes, what a wonderful idea(!) Seriously, it's actually been requested since NewGen was released  nearly 4 years ago. It used to work correctly on the original Youview software. If you look back through Youview forum, Keith one of the forum users, keeps a long, long log of features/bugs awaiting to be fixed. Hopefully it is at the top of list. John L

Youview is no longer available to buy retail.
User uptake is logically going to massively decline.
There is little or no incentive to develop the platform.
It's basically treading water till it withers and dies on the vine.
I really hoped the platform would evolve with a new box etc but that's extremely unlikely.

    Hi Kodikid,
You certainly have a lot of "enthusiasm". Some of us try to have a positive outlook. Yes, we all  get rainy days, but come on bring us some sunshine! I can think of a song coming along . . .

    @kodikid

Much as I would like to block you, or ignore you when I disagree, we really can’t have you spreading fake news on the Community unchallenged.

    So:-

Youview is no longer available to buy retail.
Retail was only ever a tiny fraction of the YouView boxes supplied into the consumer market.
User uptake is logically going to massively decline.
Retail uptake, perhaps. Overall user uptake will decline only un poco.
There is little or no incentive to develop the platform.
BT have bet the farm on YouView. They have every incentive to develop the platform.
It's basically treading water till it withers and dies on the vine.
Love the mixed metaphor 😛 - but see above. There is a bounteous grape harvest to come from a strong team of synchronised swimmers.
I really hoped the platform would evolve with a new box etc
    Yeah right, sure you did.
    but that's extremely unlikely.
You think BT are comfortable that there is no HDR?
