Rescue recordings

My box seems to have died. I have 2 recordings from when my sons were on TV. Can I rescue them?

Greetings, and welcome to the Community!

Sorry to hear of your issue here.

You can’t rescue HD (recorded from BBC1 HD on 101 or one of the other channels upwards to 114, or from 204 CBBC HD or 205 CBeebies HD), as HD is encrypted and can only be read on your particular YouView box.

But you can rescue SD (e.g. recorded from BBC1/BBC2/itv/Ch4/Ch5, on channel 1 or one of the others upwards from there to 99, or any above 99 not listed as HD), as long as there is no disc corruption preventing this.

This involves removing the disc from the box, putting it in a caddy, and reading it on a PC. If this is beyond your computer skills, a local PC repairer should be able to do it for you. The process does not affect the disc, which can be put back in the YouView box afterwards, if you or anyone then wants to try to revive it.

So it may be simpler, or it may be essential, to try to revive the YouView box first. When you say ‘died’, died how? Does it not turn on at all, or does it turn on, but get stuck booting up or what? And what model of YouView box is it?

If it does not turn on at all, then there may be a little fuse inside that has blown, and can fairly easily be replaced.

Otherwise, try a soft reset; touch the On/Standby button (or the ring on the front if the box is black) for just over 8 seconds, see if the box reboots and comes back to life.

Failing that, try a Maintenance Mode Option 2, which is a more drastic reboot, but one that still preserves your recordings:-

Follow the instructions for your exact model of YouView box, as they vary a bit from model to model. The MM can be a bit tricky to get started, so if it doesn’t, persevere and try again; but once running, it is quite automatic.

Any further queries, before or during these processes, don’t hesitate to ask; and please do let us know how you get on.

    Good luck!

Another way would be to rerecord using SCART output from your YV box to an old DVR - no DRM - you will get a SD quality DVD - see my old blog https://goo.gl/H9gbh  (your box has to at least have some life left to play the recordings)

And that may be @jo55’s problem…..

But if the box is still running, you can pull HD off the HDMI output, especially useful for the T4000s that don’t have SCART with one of these:-

    Allegedly.

But when I regretted letting go of my old DVR, and looked for another one, they seemed to be quite pricey…
