T1000 Out of Support - Does it matter?

T1000 Youview boxes are often described as being Out of Support, meaning that they will not receive any more software updates.

What are the implications of this?

The term Out of Support has been used to suggest that T1000 boxes are redundant, and that they should be replaced with more recent models.  :'(

Our T1000 is in daily use, and it works as well now as it did when I first set it up in March, 2013.  :)

Should I consider replacing it because it is Out of Support?  :/

    Hi @jonesh, you have a very valid point. We seem to be "driven" by the "market", or are we? Same problems with Home PCs running software, until the software developers add bits/rewrite fix software, make it "slightly better" and then bingo, you gradually find your hardware starts slowing down or as with Windows 11 being released, your hardware no longer can run newer operating systems. The T1000 is slightly underpowered compared to newer boxes, but this should have been thought of a long time back. How fast does your T1000 load the new homepage compared to newer boxes?

    What a surprise that the 2 BT 2100 boxes, (that own/I paid for myself) + also a T2000 pvr (for trial testing use), now run slower when loading the new "wonderful super improved" home page that in my opinion, is a total waste of resources, (inc within the hardware design/Dram memory etc). It does make you think about progress & will "my" box still work? Hopefully yes is the  answer. I hope Youview take note & your T1000 continues to provide good service. There must be many other users still with the older boxes.

    Can't wait for the day when Youview get rid of the dreaded darkened banner when using fast forward/rewind recordings.

    Simple answer, No, as long as it works.

    It's not as if out of support here means the box is at risk of attacks as software on a PC would be.

    I'd say keep enjoying it until it expires.

    @Stevef_fr8ys @jonesh

    More to the point, it’s not as if being in support means that anyone would fix it if it went wrong.

    But apropos of @redchiz’ comments about maintenance releases on newer boxes keeping them abreast of current developments, isn’t it odd that T1000s, which don’t get these releases, don’t seem to be losing any facilities?

    The acid test of YouView’s resolve will be when something happens in the broadcast world to invalidate something the box relies on, so all T1000s stop working; will YouView then step in to fix them with a software release or not?

    Or maybe when it can no longer have a working BBC iPlayer, as this tends to drop off devices more than six years old….

    Thank you for your replies.

    @John L
    T1000s didn't receive the new homepage.
    Navigation of the UI is adequately quick. In particular, Guide navigation is significantly faster than it is on the Panasonic on the shelf below.

    @Stevef_fr8ys
    Will do.

    I don't use the apps on the T1000. I only use it as a Freeview recorder. I think that it will be a while before they turn off the terrestrial TV signal.

    And as a Freeview recorder it is a good one.  🙂

    @jonesh

    Indeed; but I recall that in the early days of digital, I had to toss the Nokia digibox we were using with our still-analogue TV in favour of a Sagem, as some expansion of the system left the early boxes like the Nokia unable to cope, and it stopped working.

    It was something like that I was thinking of, not the wholesale discontinuation of terrestrial TV. Which would anyway put the kybosh on every YouView box out there, whether ‘supported’ or not 😢

    I had an ON/ITV Digital box that stopped working because of some change they made to the broadcast signal.
    I'm surprised that the DVB T1 muxes are still transmitting. They must be due for the chop soon.

    I have a T1000 and it’s not coming on at all. The power switch in front is unresponsive. any help??
  • Stevef_fr8ysStevef_fr8ys Member, Super User Posts: 766 ✭✭
    If you have also unplugged it and reconnected to the mains and it remains unresponsive, then it has unfortunately come to the end of its life.

    Others have successfully replaced a fuse, capacitor or some such, and maybe they can offer advice on this, but I think it's probably worth investing in a replacement.

    Is the power switch at the back in the On position?

    I would also say maybe leave it powered off completely for a day or two; I have one which similarly stopped showing any sign of life despite several power cycles etc... ended up leaving it off for a couple of days then thought I'd give it one last go - on it came as if nothing was ever wrong.
