My first response to the above was “but it is messed up” 😛
My second would be to query whether a firmware update could take place without being the equivalent of a factory reset?
The third as to whether the router arrived in a sealed box, or an opened box or what, and do we really think that HighNet, or Fritzbox on HighNet’s behalf, are setting up routers for users one by one, no matter how streamlined the process may be?
The fourth as to why, having carefully factory reset a router, you would put back a configuration that is quite possibly the problem in the first place.
So if I were to factory reset this router, I would certainly at least try it as is, before restoring any configuration settings.
But I still think the step before this is to try this YouView box on somebody else’s broadband.

@roy I’ve just returned from testing the box at a friend’s house and it worked perfectly. It did update the software so I was hopeful that it might work when I got home. Unfortunately it doesn’t but at least I’m not restricted to the set up screen. It still tells me it can’t connect to the internet and quotes YVM104. I seem to have access to settings so is there anything else I can try from here? My friend uses BT so I wonder if that’s what allowed it to work?

After conclusively proving that the box was not at fault, I spent an hour on the phone with the ISP. I ended up setting the firmware back to a previous version which was known to be less problematic.
Hey presto! It’s working! The system may decide to update the firmware automatically but if needs be they have said they will send me a new (different) router.
Thank you all for your help! I’ve learned loads along the way!
I hope not to be back on here but never say never……

This might be pointing to the issue described in:-

one of the postings in the thread @Louise Murdoch referred us to.
Can you give the router change described there a go?
