BBC have won the rights to show Champions League highlights from 2024.

BT and Amazon will share the live games.

The Box in BoxNation has just broadened from ‘ing’ to ‘ Office’ 😛

The reason that this news is strange is that since the inception of UCL the BBC were never considered suitable partners because of their stance on advertising.

    So

Either UEFA have relented and ditched their sponsors for the highlights or the BBC are going to allow advertising.

    Very odd.

    @kodikid
What are you on about? The BBC cover plenty of sports which are sponsored. In fact I can't think of any that aren't.
  • kodikidkodikid Member Posts: 1,106 ✭✭
Match of the day is brought to you by Heineken...official sponsor of the English Premier league.

    Not going to happen

    Yet

That's exactly how UEFA operates with the UCL.

But your right the sponsors literally pay millions to be associated with the European football elite and Man City so it will be interesting to see how they get around this issue without going against the BBC charter .

Agreed. Plus the BBC is watched by millions. Far many more than the other PSB channels

Specific,Steve, as it has my first name on it. I'm an ex-NOW TV subscriber.

In the past the £20 offer has been only available to specific subscribers...the generic offer is usually £25 a month.

Thats total rubbish. These offers aren't emailed to current subscribers, only past. I've had many discount emails from them (Sports/Cinema and Entertainment) but I've never seen a £20 Sports offer before and for 12 months:o Unheard of.

No, I'm not subscribing at the moment. My last sports ended a week after the season ended.

Well I don't know anything about algorithms....

but I do know that for the last 3 years I've received a email around a week before the prem starts offering Sky sports for 10 months for £20.

The offer was only available to the email recipient.

The proceeding offer was always 3 months at £25.

As VM mentioned this year it's a unprecedented 12 months and a free months boost.

The offer only runs to 4th August.

Yep, there are always offers around this time in various shapes and forms. This is unprecedented as you say, keeps you paying for football when there isn't any as the top leagues shut down for the World Cup, very clever of them.
  • kodikidkodikid Member Posts: 1,106 ✭✭
Yeah that did cross my mind..

no prem football for the whole of December.

But if I cancel for that month and rejoin in January it's highly unlikely that I'll get such a good deal again.

    Dilemma....

But in all fairness that rationale applies to any football subscription be it Sky or BT.

Now there we agree. Except with Sky you are usually tied to a minimum term contract, at least in the first instance?

I have an existing NOW offer which expires at the end of October. I will cancel then and wing it thereafter.  😉

Sorry didn't get that as the first four words completely threw me.

I meant about paying for the World Cup period when there is no other football on. Apologies to lower league fans.

World Cup coverage (and the tournament) begins on Mon 21st Nov and finishes on Sun 18th Dec. Premier League teams start again on Boxing day, Mon 26th Dec.

World Cup Coverage is provided by both the BBC and ITV, so as you both say, food for thought for a discounted Sky subscription take up and may be the reason why they have put this superb deal on.

The Premier League finishes on Sun 28th May. Anyone got a calculator?

EDIT - From Tues 18th Oct up to and including Mon 26th Dec (Boxing Day) all live games (and I mean all games) are only available on Amazon Prime Video.

I fully appreciate that until Liverpool won the Carabao Cup last season ( aka League cup) it was widely considered a micky mouse competition

    but ....

it does include premiere teams and it is LIVE on Sky on November 8th and 9th.

Also many would consider championship football as just as exciting in the race to join the prem

    ....also all live on Sky.

I am sure many would and do. But the fact is those tournaments are not what attract the majority of subscribers to Sky Sports.

Actually, they don't. The EFL's viewing figures on TV are abysmal. Thats probably because most fans go. The SPL's are even worse. This coming season, Match of the Day has Premier League highlights and ITV have all the rest [GROANS] because they are **** at it. Adverts adverts adverts and their presentation and punditry is usually rubbish as well.

I truly believe there's no real correlation between match attendance and tv football viewing figures...

a bizarre rationale that hurts the true fans.

the FA have used this flawed argument for time immemorial to stop live matches being broadcast in the UK at 3pm on a Saturday.

They stupidly believe Liverpool v Brighton being shown live at 3pm on a Saturday will impact on the attendance at old Trafford or any premier ground.

It's frightening that those who run our national game have no clue about the match attending public.

This is a massive inconvenience for travelling away fans as most Saturday 12.30 kick off's are just logistically impossible to get to in time using public transport.

Cost is not the only reason why illegal streaming is rampant as every single Saturday 3pm match is available to stream live somewhere in the ether.
