Channel List Management

*** Summarised idea from trials process ***

Currently there are no options to allow the user to manage the channel list to best configure it to meet their needs. Common needs might include
  • completely delete some channels from the list (e.g. removing/hiding adult channel listings, non-free channels you have not paid for and cannot use, or simply channels you find you never use)
  • placing SD, HD and/or +1 versions of channels logically together
  • reordering channels so groups of related channels are close together in the guide
  • putting most commonly used channels first
For many a mechanism to reorder and hide channels for a single default list will suffice.

For others there may be a desire to have several sets of channel listings (sometimes called favourite channels listings), e.g. one listing for the children and another for others in the household. If multiple favourite channels listings are supported then once a list is selected it needs to be sticky (i.e. it uses that list when next turned on until such time as someone changes to a different favourite channels list).

It is interesting this was a hot topic of discussion amongst trialists yet so far (admittedly there are not many people here yet) has not got much interest. The above pretty much describes the issue but I would expect more people to vote for it too?

I think that’s an excellent idea Keith.

I totally agree with Keith the ability to edit and rearrange the channel list and the inclusion of a favourites list is in my opinion is one of the most important things missing from Youview.
Humax has had these facilities on Freeview boxes since the PVR 9200T days

The current channel list is a nightmare to navigate through.

Will really appreciate it when YouView adds the channel list management.

The cheapest freeview boxes have some kind of channel management system. I would expect a £299 box to have this functionality. I like the box and its easy to work but there a few issues that need to be addressed. Humax are usually good with software updates but any reccomendations made by triallists were largey ignored.

Thought channel list management was due in the next firmware release.

Yes - the next release includes the ability to hide channels. We're looking at favourites and filtering of channels for a future release, and we're planning to update software every few months with new features.

So far I think all that was mentioned was the hiding of channels in the next software release

I'm not surprised to hear simply hiding channels is the first piece of channel list management to be ready.

For me though the thing that will make the most difference is being able to order the channels as I want them rather than as some EPG standard has defined so hopefully that will be in the pipeline for the future too.

I must be easily pleased as channel management doesnt bother me at all ... I know the numbers of the channels i watch ( I know they are in the process of being renumbered) and just type in that number................. having said that i appreciate why some people may want it especially hiding adult channels etc

    Hi,

Most important for me is hiding unwatched channels and moving the HD channels to the top of the list, e.g. BBC ONE HD at 001.

    Regards,

    Nick.

I'd also like to switch the SD channels for the HD versions, but think this should be done at menu level just like the 'Play HD' option for on demand rather than make users have to manually reassign channel numbers.

    Totaly agree on this point.
I'd love the ability of hide/delete any channels I have no interest in watching.
Any channel that requires me to phone a premium rate number to access additional / further benefits or services would be on the top of my list. Yes, I'm looking at you ITV (X-Factor) as well.

It would be terrific if I could delete unwanted channels provided they did not reappear again after a software update. I find it very tedius to have to set up channels on three TV's after every retune.

Top of my list for deletion would be the Adult channels, followed by the ones I can't receive for whatever reason. I could then use the Favourites feature for the commonly viewed channels.

My biggest complaint is that there is not a favourite channels option so that we can remove those channels we never want to watch. My TV's (several years old) and my old PVR all have this ability and I was shocked that YouView didn't (unless of course I'm missing something). Scrolling through channels now is painful.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
    Favourite channels list.

Until this feature is available, and I can totally remove certain channels from the box, I will be the only person in our house using the YouView box (not because I am stopping others, but just that they do not wish to be scrolling past the trash channels - they don't even want to see them ...!) They have decided that they won't use it at all ....

It makes perfect sense to be able to remove whatever channels I don't want and reorder the ones that I do.

I just want to be able to move the HD channels to the begining of the guide.

I bought my box yesterday, and this is another 'standard' PVR feature that I was surprised not to find.

Considering the effort placed on making the interface easy to use, it seems a bit ridiculous that there's no quick and easy way to change between your favourite channels.

Basically, you actually have to memorise the channel numbers, unless you fancy navigating through pages of channels.

Good way of exercising your mind when you get as old as me eg remembering channel numbers ...... my previous PVRs have had Channel Management but ive never bothered to use it or found a need for it as I just remember the numbers.........but I appreciate why some people want it

Top of my want list would be one touch to recordings and a You Tube app

I'm really not happy about my two young children having to scroll past adult channels in the listing. Fine for adults, but not appropriate for children. Please can we have this addressed as a priority.

    Matthew

It's under consideration but there's no planned software update until the back end of October and it's not yet confirmed this will be in that update.

Hi. It's marked as under consideration rather than "planned" as there are a few suggestions in the original post that we haven't planned into a software release yet. However, the ability to hide channels will be included in the next release, due at the end of October.

Hi Piers, DLNA in the next release?

Given that on the DLNA feature request topic it is not marked as under consideration and there is no indication from YouView that it will appear soon it would be a major surprise for it to suddenly be in the late October update. Perhaps after that update YouView might mark it as under consideration with a view to developing it for a future release (although I would still be surprised (pleasantly though) to see it in the following update in January/February).

Once again, Piers - thanks for this info. Happy that you will include some of this suggestion, and hiding the channels is a great (and I would suggest, essential) start. It will help avoid the sort of problem highlighted by Matthew Hunter above (a problem I share with him). Looking good ....

With this channel management thread, not sure if its anywhere else.

    I would like

Collapsable Content in MyView – Recordings section , Group same programmes together.

Series stacking is already confirmed as coming :)
