I totally agree, Gomez. I had a 'failed recording' but this was purely down to a schedule change where the programme was not actually broadcast. A completely different programme replaced it.
The message needs to read "Not recorded due to schedule change." or something similar. As you so rightly say - this is NOT a "failed recording". I have had no REAL 'failed recordings' at all. I suspect that probably the majority of so-called 'failed recordings' come into this category, purely based on the fairly solid performance I have experienced over the many months I have used YouView.

There is absolutely no way that the majority of my failed recordings were down to this. They were on a frequent basis and I know for a fact in nearly all instances that the programmes were broadcast as they should have been. Having said this, I have only experienced a problem with one channel/programme since the software updates earlier this year (repeats of Nashville on More4 on Tuesday nights) and I guess this could have been down to the broadcast being cancelled, but if so it is odd how often (3 weeks out of 4) it happens! Have switched to recording the Thursday broadcasts instead and has recorded last 3 OK.

Have had a few failed recordings.

A couple of future failed recordings some time ago due to adjustments to the airing time - episodes still recorded at the adjusted time.

When commencing chase play with two channels recording the attempt failed and then failed the recording - repeat was recorded automatically and now no longer chase play anything.

Checked if an episode was correctly recording then put the device into standby and the next day found the recording had failed.

And, watched the recordings menu when a recording had fully completed recording and then resulted as failed with no obvious reason.

With these few exceptions failed recordings here are becoming less and less frequent.

There are a couple of issues with this thread which mean that YouView are very unlikely to gain any more insights into the issue(s) let alone fix them, although I understand they have fixed some issues related to it recently:

    1) The original problem is the actual box error on the Recordings screen of "FAILED" or "RECORDING FAILED".
Many others are using it to report clipped or other issues with recordings, and there are other threads for those specific issues.

    2) Ppl have asked several times for failure reports to include some details about the machine and the environment.
These are mostly ignored and ppl just continue to whinge with very little supporting info.

    Greetings, MrB

A successful recording is one that starts at or just before the beginning of the programme, and continues without break, interruption or other glitch until the end of the programme, or just past that.

Anything else is a failed recording, and so is germane to this thread.

You are perhaps thinking of 'Failure to record at all', which is neither what this thread is called, nor what it's exclusively about.

Re people not saying what box they have, or where they are, proper forum software lets you use a sig, and on technical forums, people list their kit there as a matter of course.

We are also encouraged not to reveal our locations, which time and again has proved a hindrance to diagnosis of regional and transmitter problems. So while I agree with you on this, YouView have to reap what they sowed by choosing NotSatisfactory.

Finally, I might have wished you not use the word 'whinge', as it is emotionally loaded; people have legitimate complaints, this is the legitimate place to make those complaints, and most people make them in a far more restrained and objective way than YouView perhaps deserve, given how long this issue has been in existence.

Your definition assumes that the programme actually starts. The recording of a programme that never starts also gets flagged as a failed recording and it is that which I think is misleading.

Well, it isn't a successful recording, is it? :-)

But I do agree with your point that YouView could use a different and better error message for 'Not Shown', and possibly give more detail on other types of error (when it does indeed know there has been an error, which is not always)

Tried to record "The Alps Murder" on C4 last night. The recording failed, cause unknown, and YouView duly tried again on 4seven. This too failed. YouView's now aiming to record it on 4seven at 9pm tonight. It will be interesting to see if this third attempt succeeds.

Why should one specific programme fail twice? Just curious. I've had no other failures.

I bet that you did not turn it on between failed recordings? I found that if you get a failed recording it fails -all- recordings until you turn it on and look. Then future recordings will work.

So my prediction is that the next recording will work now that you've broken the cycle by looking at things.

This sentence also includes the word recording.

Shrodinger's cat? Maybe. It's true the box was on throughout both failures. It did successfully record Starter for 10 on BBC4, which began an hour before the first failed recording.

hi all - I found this Topic after searching for answers to missed recordings on my (new last week) you view Humax box.
A film that was set on Friday failed, Casualty recorder perfectly on Saturday and The White Queen failed to record on Sunday which was the only recording set for the Sunday. I have found a post in another forum that said that "the beeb have changed the crid data, series timer disappeared on YV and it has not updated on G2 and other boxes" - but as I was away from home, how can this kind of issue be resolved?
I will be seeing how the box copes over the next few weeks - with a view to returning as "not fit for purpose" if failed recordings continue!

The White Queen was recorded here and looks to be ok - haven't watched it yet but I just now played the first few seconds - bang on the button and the length is 59:50 so should be ok.

The White Queen recorded fine here but note that the Series Id has been changed for the second episode so you will need to reset the timer for next Sunday (but I suggest you watch the first episode first as you may well decide not to bovver).

On a more general note, with Wibbledon coming up inexperienced PVR users should be warned that they shoud really be recording BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4 and the Red Button Streams (BBC News and BBC Parliament too) as who knows what channels their favourites programmes will be displaced to at the last moment to make way for some "unmissable" patball.

Thanks for the info regarding The White Queen - and we will try it again next week - it may improve? At least the YV "on demand" seems to work really well, so we have now watched it!
I think there may be a problem with my box, because it's also failed to record "The Book of Eli" on 5* on Monday night :( - I'll see how it behaves over the next week or so.

Lately, all of my recordings of CSI series on 5.US missed recording about a few minutes of the end. Very annoying as you miss the mystery resolving, so to speak. I have hence been doing parallel recording on my old TopUpTV Thomson PVR. None of the recordings there missed the ends.

I don't think missed recordings is to do with broadcasters' signalling. Don't you agree?

Mine fails CONSTANTLY too and its not due to any of the reasons above. The same thing has happened to my sisters youview box too. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Hi Rebecca and welcome to the Community!

Adding Comments to a two-year-old reply, no-one can hear you scream, and anyway things have moved on a bit (not much, but a bit) since then.

There's an FAQ for failed recordings - have you, and possibly your sister, worked through it?

    http://support.youview.com/articles/S...

Similar FAQs can be found on the BT and TalkTalk websites, if your box came from one of those sources, though the advice above is applicable to those boxes also.

But if it's none of these things, then the next thing to try is a soft reset of your YouView box - touch the Power button for just over eight seconds while it is not recording, and not about to - and see if that blows the cobwebs out.

As a last resort, you can try a Maintenance Mode reset - I recommend option 4, the most drastic one that preserves all your recordings (if any of them worked, that is).

    http://support.youview.com/articles/S...

Something in the above may well cure your problem here. But if it's still no go, then call the relevant helpline, BT or TT according to who supplied your box if you got it from your ISP, or YouView itself if you bought it retail.

    And likewise for your sister.

Please do let us know how you get on, and which box you each have, and from who.

    Good luck!

Just like to add that I have tried the reset and other recommendations, had the conversation with the technical people ( offshore) who had no understanding of my problem, had several software updates all to no avail. You just get tiresd and give up. I have no more rant left.

But there are some new options in the recent post that I haven't tried and I will do that. The problem raised here may be 2 years old but it is still happening. Here is my workaround - if you want to record a channel then I switch to that channel when I am in the epg; that works sometimes. Best is to leave the box on the channel you want to record, not convenient but is best I can get.

I find it hard to accept that this problem is not knowin within the Youview technical community and that there is no fix for it yet.

I am out of warranty now so no commercial recourse.

    Hi willie

I can understand your frustration. But my experience is that in the life of the box I have had two failed recordings, and the first was due to the broadcaster pulling the programme at the last minute. So not even YouView 's fault, though I might reasonably complain that the message you get when a recording fails could be a bit more informative as to why.

But this is not to doubt that you have a real issue there; some difference between your box and mine, your location and mine, your circumstances and mine, will no doubt explain this; but we just don't know what this may be.

However, it might explain why the solution is not known to the YouView technical community, while the problem of failed recordings certainly is, to the point where it has its own FAQS, even if there are other reasons for the issue not yet on the list.

You can pretty much say that if there is a problem a YouView box can have, then there will always be a continuum of people who have it, from those who never see it, right up to those for whom a superhuman effort of will is required not to throw the damn box out of the window.

There are some errors that are universal, like the skip runaway bug, and so easy to qualify. But a lot of errors, even 'hard' ones that can be found in the code and later fixed, manifest themselves to surprisingly few people here.

It can get weird; we had someone whose box consistently misbehaved due to the way he was using the remote, due to timing issues with a minuscule window of opportunity that he almost always hit, and nobody else did. But it was real, it was in the code, and it was a hard fail if you hit that window.

I think I was one of the first, if not the first, to get the dreaded Boot Fail Invalid Signature on a software update, which is basically Game Over for a YouView box. But I got a replacement, and it's shown no more than a few quirks since. And the BFIS on update error eventually got solved.

I also had a weird bug where I could not get picture or sound on Film 4, after it moved channels. Film 4+1 was fine; Film 4 showed normal levels of signal strength and quality, but nothing on screen or speakers.

That was my second failed recording; not knowing Film 4 wasn't showing up, I'd set the box to get Sightseers last Xmas, and it didn't - couldn't, indeed.

But it really looked like I was the only person with this Film 4 issue. Even after YouView investigated, and Film 4 actually changed something in their broadcast signal (I never found out what, exactly, even if I could have understood it) that brought my picture and sound back.

So, all just for little old me, I thought, but then two more people popped up and said they'd had the issue, and it was now fixed. They were in my area, so on my transmitter I expect, but I never found out if it was more widespread than that. But again, it's weird that lots of people got Film 4 perfectly OK on their YouView boxes when there was really something wrong, or at least not ideal, in the signal Film 4 were putting out.

So I wouldn't blame you for canning your YouView box over this, as I, and most users I think, don't have to take the careful precautions you have to take to get a successful recording; we just set and forget, and all is fine, mostly.

And yes, the ISPS helplines can be like you say, though their forum reps are a lot more helpful and knowledgeable, and the YouView helpline itself is very good. It's worth giving them a call if you can bear to persevere, as you may help isolate an issue that will not only benefit you, but others in the future.

As the originator or this thread, yes I am still following it and it's amazing that two years later YouView still misses recordings and cuts programmes off due to so called (in)accurate recording.

I have long since given up on YouView,  as a box that doesn't 100% record and regularly misses start and end of programmes is a waste of space. In fact I have refused free YouView boxes that friends wanted to give me theirs as that had bought better recording boxes in the mean time.

I now have two Humax FreeSat boxes (kids room and lounge) that have not missed a recording in years and appear to always record the beginning and end of programmes. They are set to record 2 minutes early and 5 minutes after, which in my case covers 100% of the recording I do.

I really don't understand why Youview just cannot implement padding in the way you describe. It would solve all of these missing the start and end of recordings. Still by all accounts its "too complex" and we are not going to get it. :(

It still is one of my biggest frustrations with clipped recordings.

Having a box that relies on ideal world situations (ie accurate recording) either works 100% or doesn't work.

I previously had a DVR that allowed guard time padding at the start and end of recordings but this was no good where recorded programs followed each other, or where, for example, a football match went into extra time!
I am now on my second you view box (many thanks to the John Lewis 2 year guarantee) and still get failed recordings. This does at least in part seem to be due to the recorder switching between BBC South West and BBC Wales (I am in Bristol, where the digital switch over has caused no end of problems). Sometimes, the recorder decides to record both BBC SW and Wales versions of a programme, and then if a second recording is set, it will fail as 3 programmes can't be recorded!
I also have problems with 5* and 5USA, and some other more obscure channels and think this is probably a MUX issue?
However, the number of failed recordings has definitely reduced , from 2-3 per week to 1-2 per month since receiving the new box, so things have improved.

Hi Ian. We’re sorry to hear you’re experiencing some issues. Have you seen this entry in our FAQ http://www.youview.com/support/kb/why...? It may help to solve your problem. Let us know how you get on.

a link that does nothing...just like YouView!  I have a contract with BT who will take no responsibility, I hve no contract with YouView, but they take no responsibility anyway, what a waste of money I am paying out for a service I cannot use.  What are you doing about this YV?  software update WHEN???????  I have to record items I want to watch - it is pointless now even trying.  90% of the time I have to switch my box off at the back to actually get it on...20% I have to reset the box, utter tripe, shoddy service!
