Oh, I thought Piers had cleared this up (may have been on the IPTV thread). YouView are first concentrating on getting the live IP channels like BT and Sky Sports into the EPG to make them full trickplay/recordable and then they will be introducing new app services afterwards. I don't know when that will be though.

No problem at all. There's a lot of new stuff going on and even we get things mixed up from time to time :)

Piers - thanks for that confirmation (that new players will be coming to all boxes). That's great! I was afraid it might only be for TalkTalk / BT, i.e. exclusive deals.

Be nice if LoveFilm was to be added...

"LOVEFiLM has announced the launch of Disney Movies on Demand on LOVEFiLM Instant."
    (Starts today.)

This page says they've now got 158 items from Disney.

If, and its a big IF they put netflix on Youview, would it come up like sky now in the search results?

Oh, you tease! Spotted through my efforts in stalking twitter for anything including "youview" - a reply to a tweet sent earlier today:

I'm not particularly fussed about Lovefilm or Netflix meself, I find their content a bit "meh" ...but a rockin' PAYG app for box office movies would be pretty damn tasty!

NowTV is all well & good (especially at £14.99 for 6 months courtesy of Groupon) but, being based on Sky's broadcast movie channels, the content's not as shiny as can now be sourced from online providers (or Sky's own Box Office, for that matter).

I'm thinking Blinkbox perhaps (there's already historical engagement here), but I'm really not fussed who - just something with access to the latest releases as soon as they're available beyond cinemas, and preferably without having to pay for a month's access at a time (unless their content's so great & plentiful that it's cheaper to subscribe by the month).

On demand access to premium TV shows (again, as with Blinkbox) would also be great ...being able to follow top name series like True Blood, Spartacus or Game Of Thrones, close to their original broadcast date, but without having to contract myself to a whole bundle of live broadcast channels I may not be interested in would be a real boon!

Absolutely - Integrated/unified searching is fundamental to YouView and any addition to the platform ...this is what makes it unique, and the arrival of further on-demand apps will really demonstrate & reinforce the value of that integration.

Nothing else on the market does all of this

    - Roku boxes have unified searching, but don't handle anything which might be coming over live broadcast TV
    - Virgin's TiVo has unified searching, but there's bugger all in terms of wider on demand players to draw from

This is YouView's niche ...so long as the good stuff gets here :)

Tesco, who own Blinkbox, have made a few half hearted attempts to launch the service in the past but now seem to have their act together with their advertising. On the other hand their promotional prices etc are not well publicised or as undercutting as Amazon can manage with Lovefilm.

Now TV is abysmal. I took out the deal to get it for 6 months for £6 or something and so far I have used it once. You don't even get HD versions of the films. I will be cancelling as soon as the offer period os over. Their selection of content is almost as poor as their user interface.

I have to say that I thought NOW TV was pretty good, mind you I did have it on a heavily discounted promo and I doubt I would be happy to pay full price. And the quality, albeit in SD, was fine as well. They certainly have a far better selection of movies than any of their rivals imho.

I had Netflix for a couple of months and thought their offerings were far better. Lots of HD content as well which, of course, also means surround sound. Watching SD films with plain stereo for the full price asked by Now TV is just a joke, really.

I haven't tried LoveFilm as they have disabled AirPlay on their iPad app. They not seem to want me to watch their content on a TV so I'm quite happy not to. :)

If you access NOW TV via an Xbox you can get HD/5.1 if that is particularly important to you.

Tesco hired one of the co-founders of Blinkbox - Michael Comish and have promoted him "to the role of group digital officer as the retailer seeks to bolster its digital offering by hiring 150 people across the next year."

I don't have an x-Box. The point I'm trying to make is that for the price, compared to its rivals, Now TV offers a pretty poor service on YouView.

Its rivals don't offer a service on YouView, save for Lovefilm Box Office if you are with TalkTalk.

No but that does not prevent comparison with other services. I will be very surprised if LoveFilm and Netflix don't offer HD content at their current rates if/when they come to YouView but I appreciate that I am surmising at the moment. However you look at it, Now TV’s poor (in my opinion) range of content and lack of HD make it an unappealing prospect for me.

Fair enough. Bear in mind that any HD service of this kind will be subject to broadband speed, though.

Thats true. Though if your with an ISP that is on the Netflix Content Connect network, the HD bitrates are through the roof. Very impressive. Subject to line speed, of course.

You can check if your ISP has this by going to https://signup.netflix.com/superhd.
I can report that TalkTalk is.
Anyone else, please add a comment.

And supported devices are listed here: http://support.netflix.com/en/node/87...

Visionman - what speed do you need?

It's in the second of your links: "Please note that Super HD requires an Internet connection speed of at least 5Mb/s, and 7Mb/s for our highest available video quality."

Anyway that's OK, I won't need to buy fibre just yet.
What's your ISP Mr Chiz, I'm guessing TalkTalk?

It is indeed my friend, I have fibre chugging along at a happy 50Mbps or so. It does make all aspects of internet TV so much better, everything just works perfectly all the time.

Quite simply, if Netflix or LF instant don't appear on the Youview ondemand section, I will ditch the box as soon as my BT contract is up. Youview are missing a trick here. Many customers want this functionality instead of having to rely on yet another box (Apple tv / ps3 etc.) and another pain-in-the-bum hdmi input for their tv, or worse, having to rely on upgrading to a smart tv which will soon be out-of-date once again.

It might not be what Youview was intended for, but it would at least bring it all together in a useful and user-friendly way.

Agreed rob, I bought youview at launch on the loose suggestion lovefilm etc were on their way, over a year later and still not arrived. I was frustrated at the time but decided to upgrade our DVD player to blueray so just chose a Samsung smart one and now have lovefilm, Netflix, blinkbox and more on tap. I would have preferred to get this on the one box but it appears not to be, despite hints and suggestions to the contrary. All I can say to people wanting this is to not hold their breaths

Am otherwise very happy with youview box
