As things have worked out, YouView's main rôle is to serve as dedicated system box to the very limited number of ISPs who want to engage in triple-play and are prepared to give away boxes to get there.

Development is inevitably going to be prioritized to serve the needs of the ISPs who use it. IMO.

I notice that YouView have stopped advertising, having no doubt exhausted their advertising budget. I bet BT and TT are grateful for all that free exposure....

I agree with most of the comments above about You View. It does seem strange how many features which are commonplace on older machines are missing from the You View box. ( I had my box via BT so didn't look into the features as deeply as I would have done if I was buying it myself in a shop.)

I've had a PVR since 2006 and some of the features which I had previously were very useful:

    - If you are trying to set the You View box to record something but suddenly get the message that you're already going to be recording two programmes at that time, it would be helpful if the box could search for another broadcast of ANY of the clashing programmes and give you the choice as to which programme to record then and which at the later date instead.

    - My old PVR also advised you if you were trying to record an episode of a programme which you had already set to record at a different time - this feature is very useful in the +1 channel era, since it currently rather confusing and when looking through the EPG you're likely to hit record each time you see a programme you want listed, regardless of which channel it is being broadcast on and without knowing which episode will be broadcast.

    ..................................

I've noticed that sometimes when you set a recording on the You View box it asks if you want to record the series, other times it doesn't ask that , even though the programme is part of a series - is that a glitch in the software, or is there a setting I need to change on the box??

If we can't choose to list the HD version of a channel next to the SD version of that channel, could You View consider having a symbol on the SD version of a programme in the EPG when you've set to record the HD version? That would mean you could see at a glance on the SD EPG which programmes are to be recorded...... We haven't always got time before a broadcast starts to look at the scheduled recordings......!

    Hi All

The absence of a channel mgt/ reorder channel facility on Youview is a major shortfall in my opinion.

I cannot understand why it went on the market without this facility or now that its provision seems to have been requested for over one year, no progress has been made on the matter.

Here in Carlisle we get an option of Scotland or Border. However I get Scotland preferred in the listing of HD channels anyway. If I could rearrange the order it would be good or if I could choose the transponder I want to tune to (manual tune)

Hi Anthony. As you can see this thread is over a year old, and highlights one of the most commonly requested features originally raised by the triallists, before the retail release of YouView.

There are currently 278 people who have supported it, and it is the most requested item.

It is currently "Under Consideration" by YouView, not even "Planned".

You can draw your own conclusions from that.

Hi just bought Echostar twin tuner digi pvr only 20mm thick and you can add favourite list to it so just pick channels you want so why cant yourview do the same.
Echostar cheaper and very good picture . has bbc i player and more updates to come better than your view box just wasted money buying the yourview box.

Does it have 4oD, ITV Player and Demand5? Trouble with a lot of these players is they do not. Youview will be in trouble when a cheaper PVR with the standard terrestrial players comes along. Even more reason to add features like the one requested in this thread.

I recently bought a Samsung BD-F6500 Blu-ray player for less than £100. It has all the terrestrial catch-up players + Lovefilm, Netflix, Blinkbox, it can play media from usb memory stick, and obviously it plays DVDs and Blu-Rays. Built in wifi too, which works very well. YouView need to start adding new features and services because it's rapidly losing one of it's main unique selling points i.e. access to all the catch-up players.

Just added a review of the Youview on Which, pointing out that it has no channel management one of the most commonly found functions on even the cheapest PVR's and that for over a year youview have ignored all your requests to update it to include this basic function!

what is the point of youview?? have a samsung smart TV which has all channels as player and receives all channels. They can ALL be moved to whatever order I want - Ace. 1 2 3 4 5 HD if available at the beginning instead of remembering numbers. The YouView box I have from TalkTalk is rubbbish and so - instead of suffering this nonsence - guess what. Its going back - what is the point in suffering a second rate piece of equipment.

I would wish to purchase YouView, but for me it is this key issue of (lack of) Channel Management that is stopping me taking the plunge.

    Howard makes a good point.
Channel list management is top of the list of requested features.

    This really isn't rocket science.
I can't believe that YouView have still not addressed this issue.
They deserve to lose customers over it.
Howard Harrison and John Golding will not be the only ones who see this as important.

the partners would have a fit if there was a option to remove or change the numbers of there content from the guide this is why

Madcotto, why do you think the partners would be opposed to it? We can already hide channels in the guide and surely - from the point of view of the broadcaster - that is potentially a lot worse. And with the exception of the main 5 channels the ordering of channels from YouView partners seems to be arbitrary. Quite a few of the partner channels are well down the channel list. Likelihood is that that most people would place these higher in the channel list if that were an option which would be of benefit to the partner channels. Also, it's possible change channel ordering on almost every other Freeview device so what's the big deal?

    @Roy

Twin channel recording is standard for most PVRs. As for backwards EPG, in the year that I've had YouView I've used the backwards EPG once. It's nice to have but I wouldn't miss it. Having said that there are YouView features that I really like e.g. the search function and the iPhone app for remote scheduling.

I still don't understand why the partners would want to control this or how it would negatively impact on them if we were given the ability to put the channels in the order of our choosing. Most people watch the partner channels BBCs, ITVs, C4s and 5s, most of the time. If anything I'm likely to prioritise those channels over the others and put them higher up in the list. The HD channels, for example, I would put at the top of the list instead of being hidden away. The only channels that would potentially lose out are the **** shopping channels etc, which most people probably hide anyway. In fact some people might unhide them if they could put them lower down the list so even they might benefit too.

    @TomW
Twin channel recording is standard for most PVRs...

Indeed so, but that was mainly directed at Howard's comments about his TV, and we haven't yet seen many twin digital tuner TVs, if any at all below the extremely high end, at least.

But anyone who just wanted a PVR, and had to buy it retail, and didn't value the backward EPG, would be absolutely crazy to buy a YouView box, when there are so many more-complete-PVR-as-a-PVRs out there, not excluding Humax's own offerings.

And nice though the iPhone/Android app is, it's pants compared to either the Samsung app for my Samsung TVs, or the Sony app for my Sony Bluray players, both of which are full-function interactive remotes with optional keyboards, not the texty-texty-thumbs thing that YouView have to use for interactive searches since the app is not interactive at all.

And I bet when Samsung get their PVRs right, in the next generation hopefully, they will allow remote scheduling too, much as Sky do now, alongside YouView.

On your comment below that, yes I agree with you. There are all sorts of conspiracy theories about what the partners will and won't allow, but I don't believe any of them. Not least because who gets what channel number, at least for broadcast TV and even some of the new IP channels, isn't even set by YouView, but rather by Freeview, and YouView have to fall into line with this.

I think the decisions about the order of channels in the EPG are made just by YouView.
The BBC Trust's approval for the BBC participating in Canvas (as YouView was then called) was made "on the understanding that Canvas will be governed by the following principles:
...listing on the electronic programme guide and UI will be awarded in a fair,
    reasonable and non-discriminatory manner..."

That's 'have to' not as mandated by any specific rules, but by the utter undesirability of putting all the channels on different numbers from Freeview when there is that 100% overlap, unlike Sky and Virgin, so it all gets completely out of control, Mrs Smith on the 17th floor can't find Corrie, and the listings magazines all have to start listing yet another set of numbers.

I'm sure the rule you cite will apply to the extra Internet channels that will appear on YouView boxes when they escape from the ghetto of the ISP players, though.

But we're talking about putting the channels in a different order in the EPG not assigning different channel numbers. Or have I misunderstood?

Putting the channels in a different order doesn't preclude the use of the standard Freeview/YouView channel numbers for navigation. On my Topfield for instance I have the channels in a customised channel list (several in fact) but when I enter say channel 24 I'm still taken to ITV4 in exactly the same way that I would if they were in the default order. Why would that be any more difficult for Mrs Smith?

As an aside - the Topfield doesn't even list the channel number in the EPG, it just shows the channel logo. I've never paid the slightest attention to channel numbers and I think that these days most people just navigate using the EPG.

    Hi TomW

Yes, I completely agree with you - the channel numbers stay the same, only the sequence alters, and with Favourite channels, you choose the sequence of presentation completely.

But apropos of logos only, it's fine for a short Favourites list, but paging up and down the YouView EPG looking for the logo you want, instead of popping in 1-3 digits and going straight there, is not my idea of fun.

But maybe the Topfield manages this in a more streamlined way?
