YouView delivers first Ultra HD set top box in the UK

Hi all,

We're delighted to announce, that the Humax DTR-T4000 box will now be available to consumers via BT. For more on this announcement see our press release.

    Like a lot of people I find Freeview adequate for my viewing needs, and so don't see the need to pay a monthly fee for that. Will a YouView box with these specs be available via retail, or is YouView inexorably tied to those providers who charge a monthly fee?

    That's a very good question. It had better be available via the retail route. But given what happened with the T2000 series that wasn't available retail until three or four months after its release. This box may well be the same

    Is this box going to be available via the retail route?

    Hi both,

    Currently, the only way to get the T4000 box would be through BT. If this changes we'll make an announcement.

    Thanks Sanj - I expect that is really when such a box is available a further announcement will be made. Perhaps BT will offer a BT retail badged version of the T4000 and Humax will offer a pure retail one in appropriately different case.

    I'm not of course expecting a confimation of the when rather than if ;-)

    Thanks Sanj. Being a member of this forum for so long has allowed me to hone, almost to perfection, my ability to wait for future events with interminable patience. We'll see what the future brings.

    It begs the question why would we need it at retail anyway? If its just BT sport in UHD it would not have much retail value. I suppose Netflix may be able to utilise it (but will they? They don't seem interested in fixing basic surround sound on Youview).

    Well done Youview. I can't imagine this not being available to retail eventually. Wonder what the eBay prices will be for these units? Presumably they will be able to act just like retail units if bought second hand? Will they be quicker then the t2000's I wonder? If so Bt/ Humax may as well go straight to retail to make more profit from these new units instead of leaving it to eBay.

    Have to say that this upgrade ( if it is a performance upgrade not withstanding the 4k ) is certainly one the benefits of collaboration with the ISPs. I'm sure hardware upgrades wouldn't come so quickly otherwise.

    The stunning picture quality of Ultra HD, with four times the detail of HD, will be the star of BT’s top TV package, Entertainment Ultra HD.

    It includes BT’s new 1TB Ultra HD YouView+ set top box, giving 600 SD or 250 HD hours of storage and 47 premium channels including entertainment, documentary and lifestyle channels, with 13 in HD and the BT Sport Pack with all of the UEFA Champions League and Europe’s first Ultra HD channel, all for £15 a month.     I have used a LG UGD TV for the trial and yes the picture quality of the live feeds, at the start of the trial, had issues. Now I can only say the picture quality is stunning. Also the UHD VOD really blows you away. From the help files it's not just Sport in UHD but Films and TV content.

    Wonder whether it will work with non 4k TVs for those not needing the 4k, but with mind to benefiting from better performance and a larger harddrive?

    Performance is much better than the G4 HD box.

    The video shows how to set the output to 720p. Also it would be foolish to not offer these to forward thinkers.

    On the trial box you have HBMI setting of UHD 50fps in either 8 but or 10 bit you also have 720p, 1080i and 1080p. So don't see why not, unless this has changed in the official launch STB. I have just received that but not set up so cannot confirm yet. Will do it over the weekend.

    Perhaps larger harddrive, and boost to overall performance ?
    But yes Netflix should really sort out the 5.1 sound or lack there of.

    That's the only place I could think of. Unfortunately they don't train their staff on how to set up the equipment so I doubt we'll see BT Sport in UHD. Also the TV will still be set to radioactive "Shop" mode.

    Netflix not currently available on UHD box, but coming shortly according to help files on BT

    Yeah- agreed. I find it extraordinary how difficult it is to see these connected pvrs in action in the shops. If u want a demo it's seemingly impossible to get one. Had the same experience when looking for a freetime demo. Why don't Youview & others encourage john Lewis and other shops to put on demos? Surely it would help with sales?

    Afraid you only have to take my word as to how good it is. The UDH channel has gone from a trial channel to ready for launch today. There are sport cameos from the live feed during the trial. One sporting event has a section in slow motion, the player throws up a small divot from his boot, you can see the divor and the blades of grass on the divot. It's not even a close up shot. I know this doesn't help, but I can assure you the difference between HD to UHD is markedly better. Worth the upgrade!

    If you ever want demos of kit you might want to try richer sounds some of their stores have dedicated demo rooms with loads of kit setup. But it's a bit of a mute point at the moment as no one will have one of these boxes as it's not available retail yet

    The email I received today  says

    Unfortunately, Netflix is currently unavailable on the new box.
