Well, this is extremely disappointing. I checked again this morning that COM7 was ok, and the signal strength was still 75%. I watched a HD COM7 channel for a while, with no problems. So I thought I would risk a retune, as I'd not done one since July. Big mistake, as COM7 disappeared, and multiple retunes have not brought it back. So it seems the issue may have nothing to do with signal strength, but appears to be solely a Humax/Youview issue.

Interestingly perhaps, after 5 retunes in a row with no COM7, I powered the Youview box off completely at the mains for a couple of minutes. Then I switched it on and immediately did another retune, and COM7 came back (and still 75% strength and 100% quality). Odd.

Very odd - mine are still there (just checked) but ain't doing another retune just in case.

Be nice if someone from Youview could give an update on this. I'm sure there stance will be that their not at fault, but surely they have a duty of care to find out what might be causing this problem, and make sure it doesn't get any worse.
TalkTalk seem utterly unhelpful, its always my aerial or pointing at the wrong transmitter that's the problem according to them.

I'm waiting for plusnet to get back to me - hopefully they will shed some light onto this issue

Since it seems that power cycling the box can make a difference, and my experience suggests it is definitely not a problem with signal strength, that implies the tuner is getting into a state where for whatever reason, it can't receive the multiplex, and forcing a cold start may correct it. To be fair to Youview, it may be beyond their control if it's happening at a lower level in the firmware than they have access to, but you would hope that they are talking to Humax about it. It's very frustrating, but it's been a problem for months already without anybody really admitting there is a problem, much less taking ownership of it. I'm not holding my breath.

Is there a way of disabling any automatic software download?

Not that I'm aware of, disconnect the lan cable ;-)

How annoying - so we are held hostage with s/w updates which usually screw the box up. Never mind.
I am not sure of the significance of this, but out of curiosity I have just looked up the Hannington transmitter on http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/ and it is flagged as having a "Possible weak signal."

That would be highly significant:-
YouView needs a stronger signal than your TV does, generally;
Tuners can hang on quite grimly to a weak channel they know was once there, but can give up on it when asked to do a retune.
Pretty much covers the most recent observations above, I think.

Well, in my opinion, it does not cover recent observations at all. How does a mux with a 75% signal disappear on a retune, then come back after a power cycle? Why has the signal always been 10/10 on my TV, while its been missing from Youview for months? I don't believe signal strength is the issue at all.

Coincidence, and 'for months' <> 'recent'?
But you may have a point here.

This is all very interesting. I am having exactly the same problem with a brand new ‘BT’ YouView box but I don’t think it’s down to Hannington. I am receiving from the Mendip transmitter. I live about 8 miles south of the TX, slightly over the brow of a hill but within the predicted ‘good signal’ area.
I am getting all main multiplexes from that transmitter with the exception of Com7. (I also don’t get the LBS service but that is beamed away from me and is only 10KW).
The full power multiplexes from Mendip are 100KW. Com7 is 72.4KW. Com8 however is only 17.5KW and I’m receiving that, (not that I watch much QVC!)
Despite several re-tunes, no Com 7.
Here are some readings....
Com7 – Ch33 72.4 Kw No Signal
Com8 – Ch35 17.5 Kw Signal strength 10% to 20%
BBCA – Ch 49 100 Kw Signal strength 47%
BBCB – Ch 58 100 Kw Signal strength 34%
Box is the BT Humax one. DTR – T2110 500.
Sounds like software to me but how long before BT update, never mind YouView or Humax! L

In your Mendip case the extra muxes Com7 and Com8 seem to be on frequencies that are quite a bit different to those of the main 6 muxes - so the fact that you have a poor signal on one and no signal on another may be down to the aerial type or alignment or geographic issues.

I agree with zulu17 that those are poor strengths for even what you do get.
Check your aerial connections all the way back to the source and make sure they are good - no bizarre airing cupboard issues, for instance :-)
And if they are good, maybe get a local aerial fitter to inspect, and see what improvement can be made?

Hi Zulu,
Yes, this is somthing I've considered but look again at the power differences. Com 8 has only 17.5Kw. Com7's power is about 4 times that at 72.4 Kw and its only 2 channels away. I'd have to lose over 6db in signal strength in 2 channels to not get Com7. Also, the signal drops as the channels get higher so its probably a mid band one. Only recently moved to this area. Does anyone know what channels the old analogue channels were on for Mendip?
I suppose its possible. Its an old aerial.... but other people seem to have this problem too and at different transmitters. Anyhow, not planning to climb up the chimney at the moment so will wait and see.

I live in a set of flats with a shared aerial - so testing is impossible but my other devices (old BT youview box) and 2 TV's can receive all channels

If it is an external aerial, go outside and see what other people's aerials look like, and which way they are pointing, especially any bright and shiny ones that might indicate they are recent. Or that have yellow plastic. I don't know what difference, if any, yellow plastic makes, but it seems to be an indication of newness.
While there is no such thing as a 'digital aerial', there are aerials more and less suitable for certain reception areas, and if your looks different from those around it, or points in a different direction, or is dull-looking without any yellow plastic, this may tell you something.

Hi M C,
The main 4 old analogue TXs at Mendip were on aerial Group C/D (the high end of UHF/coded green). What's required now is a wideband (group W/coded black) aerial. Have a look at the aerial. If it's a wideband Yagi type it will have a longer dipole element (the element connected to the feeder) than the director elements (the majority of elements). Probably, the easiest way is if you take a photo of the aerial and post it here. Most aerials fitted in the past 10 years or so are the wideband type.
Customers served by the Mendip TX have required wideband aerials since the days of Channel 5 analogue, which was on UHF channel 37. That dates back to 1997!

Many thanks for all the comments.
I have now discovered that Mendip originally transmitted analogue signals in Band C/D so that means the old aerial on my roof is probably tuned for that. I very much doubt it’s a wide-band one so the lower frequency channel 33 is likely to be more attenuated as a result. As I said earlier though, losing in excess of 6db between channel 35 and 33 sounds a lot... but it could drop suddenly and RF is funny stuff so I suppose I’d better go with that as the problem.
I’m still not planning to rush up the chimney so I’ll do without those channels for now. But this has been an interesting exercise. (Frankly I’d sooner it were a software problem as I wouldn’t have to do anything about it.... but I am now leaning towards aerial).
If/when I update the aerial, I’ll report back, (or if they do a software update).
Thanks again,
MC
PS - Thanks, Chris. Wikipedia gave me the C/D answer as your post came up!
So oddly, my COM7 channels from Hannington reappeared last Thursday (I have been scanning several times a week). I have not changed anything, so will try to never retune the box ever again!

So, after a frustrating time with pn being unable to resolve this and Plusnet encouraging me to call youview themselves they were unaware of any issues. I had a TV booster put back in play as this had previously resolved the matter in terms of the missing channels. The guy told me to remove this and retune, and hey presto the missing channels reappeared. BUT - my signal strength is at the very top end of what it should be. The guy said it should be between 55-75% and mine is approx. 78%, this may be the reason why the COM 7 channels periodially disappear. I will buy an attenuator from eBay and see if bringing the signal strength down makes the COM 7 channels remain in situ!
Annoyingly the old BT YV box and my LG TV were ok in terms of the COM 7 channels remaining even with a booster!

Bizarre - given a very strong signal, the YouView box must be putting its metaphorical fingers in its metaphorical ears :-)

Just for amusement, I did another (4th) retune today and hey presto all the Com7 channels appeared! They are I must admit only 10% signal strength on my antique antennae which I’m sure is single band. But this time they are there.
Obviously I am on the cusp of enough signal with that aerial , a length of wideband wet string might do better! Maybe the wind was blowing this way today!?
