The thinking behind it was that the old UI looked tired and dated. Though in fairness to what you're saying Max, the implementation of the new UI is indeed awful and so they are going to change it.
When, where and how I have no idea, but would hope to have some input on it.
    But the tiles are staying.

With apologies for the double post,. Don't know if this is a browser or GetSat issue, but can't seem to remove the duplicate either :-(

Where is the option to choose how the UI renders (E.G. list mode), at least users could have been afforded a transitional option.
In short, we hate it. Please sort it out as soon as possible.

Which model of box do you have? You may need to go down the maintenance mode route i mentioned earlier, to rule out any hardware issue. Of course you'll have to steam through your current recordings first as they'll be gone.

One can actually do this now.

Whilst on any live channel (say BBC1 SD) on the remote, press the  ' > '  right (or left) button on the outer wheel surrounding the OK button. This has the effect of turning the MiniGuide (YV 2.0s central engine) into a separate Mini EPG, from where one can see now & next on the current channel and the channels up and down around it.
The Mini EPG looks like this and is displayed in full screen mode -

The new-look BT TV mini guide

Note - the above is an EPG screen shot (not MiniGuide).

So, from say BBC1 SD, flick right and then up, and in a wrap around fashion you'll land on Channel 810 (which is currently tiny pop). You are now at the top of the EPG.
    Hope that helps.
I'm now happy with the disagree icon, because its gone.

I see. A workaround for doing the wrap around from getting from top to the bottom of the guide without needing to scroll through the whole lot. Cheers. I hope they put the wrap around back into the main full screen TV guide at some point. I'm sure they will. Still minor niggles aside I'm liking the new user interface.

The box is a BT Humax DTR-T2110.
i have now completed a reset via the maintenance mode menu.

iPlayer / ITV Player now working.
However the box itself is still slow, taking several seconds (sometimes 10+) to load recordings / schedule.
Guide also slow to respond, which causes you to press the up/down keys again meaning that when the box responds it jumps past the channel you wanted.

Another real annoyance is that the box returns to the TV when you stop a recording playback.
For example, if you accidentally start playback and then want to change to another,
    • Press Stop
    • Box returns to TV channel
    • Press YouView button, box loads you view menu
    • Press right arrow twice to get to MyView
    • Press OK to open MyView
    • Press down arrow to enter recordings
    • Navigate to the required recording
Same is true if you want to delete a recording just watched.
How this can be considered progress is beyond me.

How much additional space do all of stupid menu images take?

    I could go on.

In my opinion, it's abundantly clear that whatever testing has allegedly been done is woefully inadequate, and unfit for rolling out.

As a software developer I would love to see the project plan, sprints, test plan and regression testing and how the new UI was designed.

Given the number of unhappy owners it's clear that this update must have been rushed out.
YouView support have stated that now that the UI is HTML 5,  they can now rollout updates quicker and more often.
Lets hope that they are true to their word.

    On the main screen guide
If at the bottom of the guide try entering 000 . , if at top of Guide enter 999 (make sure you are holding the remote and not your phone)

Yes that works for me Zulu. Cheers. Although I have to scroll three screens on my Logitech remote to get to the numeric keypad :-).

Don't count on that. YouView seem to think that the EPG filters are a wonderful feature. They may well see the current functionality as a useful way of accessing them.

All I've read is that youview plan to release updates more frequently. So fingers crossed. With it being a complete new UI, first release, I'm sure there will be updates with more features. When I read all the negative feedback I feared the worse, but it's no where near as bad as made out IMO.

The negative comments on this forum, many of which have been OTT (known as venting), have been noted by other fora. I commented that the negative reaction on this forum was disproportionate to the comments on all the others and was a bad thing.
Roy then countered my point of view by saying it was in fact a good thing.
    Upon reflection, Roy was right.

I can see there's a lot of unhappy people on the forum regarding the new UI. All that matters to me is I quite like the update. :-). Each to their own as they say. Thanks for TV guide tips, but now I'm happy, I shall slip off back into the real world.

This update is terrible. It started downloading mid-evening while we were trying to watch a recorded programme, causing our box to freeze. We couldn't pause or fast-forward and it made a programme that was being recorded crash. It would have been nice to have a message pop up on screen to notify us that the download was about to start and to give us the option to delay it.

It doesn't add any new functionality (eg being able to view a list of recorded and scheduled programmes on the app would be very useful) but it has made the following things worse or broken them:

    • iPlayer stopped working (when you select it kicks you back to live TV with no warning or error message). This has since been fixed with a factory reset, but the fact I had to do this at all suggests the update wasn't tested properly before roll-out.
    • The updated user interface was also much slower with a random delay every time I pressed a button on the remote (sometimes a couple of seconds, sometimes 10-15 seconds, especially when navigating to a different section). This has also been improved by the factory reset but it still isn't as smooth as the old version.
    • You can't sort myTV alphabetically any more, only chronologically (who honestly thinks "I can't remember the name of the programme I'd like to watch but it was definitely on a week ago last Thursday"?)
    • When a recorded programme finishes, it doesn't prompt you to delete it any more so you have to navigate back to it on the myTV screen and do it manually.
    • You can't hide unwanted channels any more (the channels I had previously hidden have automatically been restored by the factory reset I had to do to fix iPlayer).
    • When you start the box, the menu that pops up on screen doesn't disappear automatically.
I am sure this howler will be addressed in an upcoming release.

But in the meantime, I am told that if you press and hold the left arrow key, it will keep moving back till you get to the first episode.

    Another bug.
    Open recordings.
Navigate to a series recording with multiple episodes.
    • Pressing delete, instantly deletes the selected recording without ANY confirmation.
    • Say, you have 5 recordings in a series and delete 2 of the 5. When you return to the main recordings screen, it incorrectly states '5' episodes when it should state '3'.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but one thing caught my eye today.

On my BTTV-connected T1000, the main full-screen array of Players puts BT TV Player ahead of Netflix - as it did prior to NextGen.

However, on the ribbon of "Players & Apps" at the bottom of the screen, Netflix comes before BT TV Player.

It's nothing I'll lose any sleep over, but I bet the suits at BT aren't happy!

Another example of change for its own sake! (Remember Windows Vista?) Big Brother has imposed another absolutely pointless piece of "doggy do do's" into my otherwise contented TV viewing. Hi nidgep,

We take on board everything that you've said. We've been feeding back all users comments to our internal teams here. Extensive user testing has been carried out in development and bringing improvements to MyTV remains a top priority for us. The navigation in MyTV including back journeys is one of the things we're looking to improve.

The bugs you've mentioned in your most recent comments are both known issues. However pressing delete on a 'series stack' should always provide a message to confirm you want to delete all episodes in this series. If you're deleting a single episode, we have settings that can offer a confirmation message.

The bug with the incorrect amount of episodes shown following deletion of episodes from the series is something we're working on fixing. At the moment if you back out of MyTV and go back in the number should update.

Sanj, is there any way YouView can just hold up their hands and say "our mistake". You could put a new wrapper on the old system if the Youview UI was deemed to look tired. It would seem this is literally a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

BT YouView box updated yesterday to 27.47. Box has been great until this update. It's terrible. It might be HtML5 but the UI design is awful, clunky and slow. iPlayer and ITV player wont work either. Way too many clicks to achieve the same thing, images everywhere don't add anything to the user experience.  It wasn't broke so didn't need fixing. Where is the option to choose how the UI renders (E.G. list mode), at least users could have been afforded a transitional option.

But YouView don't think it was broke, or very soon would be, and would remain so, or deteriorate even further.

While NextGen certainly hasnt 'fixed it', at least it has the promise of doing so.

Yes, I messaged Youview direct and their response was

"The new user interface design we are currently rolling out across all YouView connected boxes was created in close collaboration with our shareholders and reflects our ambition to leverage the cloud technology and to provide a new and faster experience to existing boxes. This is built on newer technology and allows us to update the functionality and features far more quickly than was possible before."

I get the reasoning behind updating the interface. I don't get why Youview chose to roll the new UI out half baked with some of the really useful features missing. A glossy new interface might entice new users but loss of functions and and a clumsy UI might lose them as many of its existing users.

    • When you start the box, the menu that pops up on screen doesn't disappear automatically.
bring back the old firmware i have had enough of this youview i bought my own boxes and now i got nothing but a rubbish piece of equipment absolutely disgraceful youveiw

This is my first experience of NextGen having had my T1000 updated a few hours ago.

I can't comment on the good/bad UI as I haven't had enough usage of it yet, but I would like to make one major comment.

Since the update, whenever I attempt to load any online player, such as BBC iPlayer or the BT Player, I get the "Loading" screen for about 1-2 seconds, then it goes back to the live TV channel I was previously watching.

I have done the usual resets - router reboot (it's Ethernet-connected) and box 8-second reboot.

Maintenance Mode 4 Reset did the trick for me too...thanks :)

Thank you for the reply Sanj.
Since the update and given the volume of unhappy owners and the number of problems highlighted, I'm not sure how many would be believe the statement about 'exhaustive testing'.
I really want to believe that resolving these problems is your top priority and that the new software updates really can be rolled out more quickly (full tested, with proper usability metrics and regression tested of course) and very soon!image

Max: there's a strong clue to what happened here if you read between the lines of that reply. Hint: shareholder <> user.

nidgep: You fail to make the distinction between design and execution. The 'exhaustive testing' has successfully ensured that the badly designed software executes almost flawlessly.

And one thing YouView have is incredibly good automated regression testing. I don't think I have ever seen a bug knocked on the head in YouView, only to resurface in a later release.
