I have arrived at this forum as my TV box was update a week ago. I have tried to get used to it - and some areas are good - but the MyTV area is useless. I want the option to have an ordered list as well.
I don't know what user were used in the testing, but this option is missing.

Yes keep the option of the image layout - that may suit some , but to lose an organised list of recordings is a real miss in the functionality.
I guess the the UI designer maybe got carried away....

if there is no update to a list view option - I will be looking elsewhere... even into the dark world of SKY!)

VM: Could you update your auto-correct for 'proprietary'?

@Fredy Maybe you misunderstood the purpose of the comparison. Scott leslie is going to be considering his options soon and he is not happy with the youview ui. He also mentioned his dad has sky and it better basically from the sounds of his posts his dad has a older box so the comparison between sky q and youview was about mostly helping another forum member out and letting him know that sky only give sky q out and its image based. It's all about context and what may be not relivent to you can be highly relivent to someone else.

However you are entitled to your opinions.

Maybe people will stop that if the UI designers would stop designing the software as if it's being used with a cursor/finger. It's a TV box, it is used in conjunction with a remote.

Until that time I will keep drawing comparisons to the dreadful tiles in Windows 8, and we all know what happened to them.

Sky Q, Netflix, Virgin V6 are all tile led so you should still compare with them. They are TV Stb same as YouView not a PC that are configured for many thousands of different purposes.

Visionman its not about wanting to live in the past, it's about wanting to having a box that works at least a good as it use to, if not better, and there is no way that it does. If I could go back the past I would, that way I'd unplug the internet from my box so it could never be up graded

scott: Then maybe they're all going down the wrong road. Style over substance, and it's not been helped by the complete pigs ear they've made of the update.
Also do those STBs have unintuitive journeys, blanks tiles unnecessarily large tiles?
I don't think there should be any issues comparing the update to the previous version and it would seem that the update doesn't really cut it.

    VM: Was just a joke.

I use auto correct too I use a smartphone for the forums while I do appreciate people letting me know of a error so I can fix it for future posts some people may not and part of rule 12 says not to make uninvited remarks about typos. While I have zero issues about my typos been pointed out to me others may do so please be careful as you wouldn't want another member emailing the forum staff about your posts.

Anyway hope you all had a great easter.

you need to properly document what the features of the system, then put that out to your trialists to verify and fill in the gaps, then get some decent testers in to create a test suite, that way in the future you won;t accidentally remove features like you have done with this release

also you need to provide the ability to allow end users to choose their own 'skins' in as much detail as possible, a decent framework would allow this to be dropped in to almost every screen

i do wonder how much of a separation that you devs have done between the various sub parts of the system, or even on a higher scale of keeping the gui and file system separate, it certainly seemed like it wasn't in the past

i not we still do not have the ability to create our own folders, something that i have found very useful on my old topfield as it enables me to keep my recording list tidy and to keep the kids and adults recordings away from each other

btw i speak as some one with over 20 years of experience in both gui/client server/software engineering design and programming, sadly unemployed as deemed too old...

Roy, I'm curious. Is your surname 'Biggs'? (Genuine question).

Ha, but no.  ...  I was employed by IBM for some 25 years, made redundant recently. Someone in the company averse to any redundancy was a Mr Roy Biggs. He's been there since the early 70's and is basically, the king of legacy kit, whilst all the new tech whizz kids get lost in the cloud. (Hence similarities with your own comments).

There seems to be an issue here in that if tiles are implemented correctly then it can be easy to navigate. The issue for YouView is that it's implemented this 'update' very badly and omitted features that existed before and people liked such as 'hide channels and action panel'. If they say they can be put back OK then why omit them in the first place. Very poor implementation and testing.

I don't want to live in the past.

But NextGen has taken us to an ur-past, a past that never was, a past in which a YouView box has less functionality than it had when it was launched back in 2012, let alone the current CurrentGen.

So where are we roughly now, about 2010?

And based on that Sky screen that redchiz pictures, shouldn't somebody be telling them that in the future, nobody shows complete programme titles any more, and Sky should stop living in the past, and get up to date?

@Ceg - I am not saying don't compare it with the previous version, I am saying don't compare it to Windows 8 or any other PC OS. A PC is infinitely configurable in Hardware, OS, Programs etc depending on it's use (writing letters, running games, hosting a server/client setup, running as a media server etc etc). the YouView STB is designed to watch TV....

By all means compare it to other mainstream UI's out there (SKY Q, Virgin V6, iPlayer, Netflix, Amazon etc etc) but the fact is just because you don't like something doesn't mean 'nobody' or even the majority don't (just because they are not on here saying so doesn't mean they don't exist as many of the people on here now have never been on here before saying how much they 'liked' the old system).

The problem is there are many people saying much the same thing BUT in different ways on different threads and that doesn't actually help. You would find if you searched enough (not easy on here I know) that I stated a few of the problems the minute the update was launched and so especially did Keith who made a fantastic list of all it's shortcomings, believe it or not I think you will find YouView knew a lot of these shortcomings and were working on some things even before the update was released...now you could argue that it should have been improved before the initial release but unfortunately YouView tried that at their inception and very nearly never made it out of the blocks at all because of all the waiting to get everything right.

Rightly or wrongly this is where we are and we now need to highlight improvements and move forward with them instead of shouting 'take me back'

Nobody minds YouView moving forward with NextGen, I hope.

But lots of people mind being dragged off CurrentGen before NextGen is remotely ready for prime time :-(

    Hi all,

Following your valuable feedback on MyTV there are a number of improvements that will be rolled out to your box shortly.

    These include;

    •    Easier navigation with a new layout of 12 equally sized, larger scale tiles
    •    See more of the programme title and details with the new larger tiles
    •    Start at the beginning of a series folder as we now land you on your first recorded episode
    •    And in addition, the main menu will now timeout after 30 seconds so you can get back to watching your favourite shows quicker

The phased rollout of the updates to MyTV start shortly. We will let you know as soon as possible.

Thank you again for your feedback.

    Phil,
Thank you for your prompt response, however, the way I interpret that response is as follows:
    1) The impact of the new dumbed down interface was NOT properly researched.
    2) It was NOT Beta trialed before release
    3) No option was provided to revert to the old UI.
    4) There should be options to have a text list or tiles. Enforcing tiles is NOT GOOD. especially as, often, it is difficult to know what the program actually IS. Like many people, I CAN actually read, so for many, a list is preferable.
This all smacks of poor practice. Having been in the computer industry since 1967, I recognise the symptoms of bad management, poor design and poor practice which are evident in this latest update.
It should be withdrawn asap and PROPERLY TESTED BY USERS before release.
