New Freeview Play box

Humax have released a new Freeview Play box, the FVP-5000T .
https://uk.humaxdigital.com/product/fvp-5000t/

It does seem to me that anyone looking for a box who doesn't do a great deal of research would quickly be persuaded to choose this rather than YouView just on the basis that it can record 4 programmes whilst watching a 5th.
(Unless they want Ultra HD.)

Interesting. I'm not sure how that works with just 3 tuners?

Personally I like the look of the Live TV app which apparently lets you stream both live TV and recordings from the box to your smart device. Nice.

Very interesting to me too.  My YV box crashed once again yesterday and I have missed a few recordings over the last two weeks due to lack of use (I have visitors).  With the old YV becoming more unreliable, I'll be considering this or similar as a replacement, maybe as a Christmas present to myself?

Recording 4 seems to be limited to the programmes being spread across a max of 3 multiplexes.

Still, it's better than YouView in that respect.

    It's a shame YouView can't offer record 3 accross a max of 2 muxes.

    Edit:
I see that the recording options are the same as the previous FVP-4000T box.

Can anyone suggest why a customer would choose MeView over said Humax box if they have no interested in ISP subscription content?

Hi pk9, I have never heard of MeView or Himachal, but a lot of customers choose BT and TalkTalk because they provide a cheap/free box. Like Sky, who I have heard of. But I guess the premise of this topic is for those who choose to buy retail? If you have no interest in paid content then most modern TVs provide all you need. Other than PVR facilities of course. Gosh, it's more complicated than you might think, innit?

Yep choice is good. *Corrected to say Humax - auto suggestion went for Himachal. Does Talk talk still use Indian centers? I put anything before 'view' to denote YV box.

Um, TalkTalk use various call centres - centers is the American spelling - as do many other providers, I feel we may be straying from the subject under discussion here?

Interesting to compare the remote controls (FVP-4000T & FVP-5000T)
    image
A few more buttons including one that goes straight to recordings (there's a novelty).
But still no "i" button which I find astonishing.

Now, Now, jimb. :-) Don't mention the lack of an 'info button', as you'll give a certain administrator on the My Humax Forum a heart attack with such Heresy. And said always responds with 'You just press the info button.' But apparently I'm not allowed to comment on anything FVP. So lets see what the Humax troops on the ground think -

"Recordings - can now be viewed as Grid (tiles - as per 4000T) or a List."
I hope YouView will take note of that.

This is a youview forum but yes i agree the freeview play does look great, but on the TV today do we really need to record 4 things very often hard to find 1 program.  Since Youview upgraded to Next Gen they were not ready for the upgrade as they took away many features 1) Discovery mode 2) Mini TV 3) Ability to hide channels,  4) in 5 years we have had just one APP American style weather APP,  I can just stick my head out the window for a weather forecast lol come on YouView must do better.

Humax had a 2 TB version of their T1010 Youview box on retail sale. I believe in 2014.

The only question I have is will the Humax 4000T, which was only introduced in 2015, still continue to be supported my Humax and receive updates? As there hasn't as yet been a public announcement on it, as per -
"Nothing has yet been confirmed in terms of a possible software upgrade to the FVP 4000T, if and when that changes I’ll update you all soonest."
    https://myhumax.org/forum/topic/fvp-5000t-im-well-annoyed/page/2#post-60888

With the original and first ever FVP, the Freeview Play 4000T only being 2 years old I personally can't see it.

VM, how does a punter get info then on this box if there's no info button? You obv have the answer even if it's not possible. Please forgive my lack of knowledge on this new product and Humax branded boxes in general (also I can't be bothered to do research when you clearly have the "info" anyway). My loathing of NextGen screwing my box up continues apace so I'm still on the hunt for a basic box that pauses live tv and provides simple recording function without all the other spangly stuff. The 28.26 update on my BT box destroyed the pause functionality to refresh your memory.

Hi Dave. The only info I've seen about this is a few posts on this forum -
    "Use the mini guide:
    For example.....
Watch live TV e.g. BBC 1 HD

Press Down Arrow (below OK button)
Press Down Arrow again (On my screen I now have info about BBC 2 HD)
Press Right Arrow (That then shows a list of programs for BBC 2 HD.

Press OK (Brings up information about the current program on BBC 2 HD without changing to it)"

Just to give a general overview of the two (three?) boxes -
FVP 4000Ts and the upcoming 5000T are heavily laden feature rich boxes such as -

    3 Tuners
    Manual tune
    Manual Timer
    Series Folders
    WiFi - 802.11n Wi-Fi
    DLNA Server/Client
    Multiroom support (additonal kit required)
    2 USB ports
    Scart socket (4000T only)
    Series record
    Pause live TV
    Auto Delete
Archive to USB - (when it works properly)
    No Scart connection on 5000T
    RF Loop thru'
    Netflix
    Youtube
Search IP and guide for programmes.
    Now and Next TV Guide
Option of recordings Grid or Lists (with many preferring its Grid layout)

Whereas much of the above was never YouViews goal. Simplicity, accessibility and speed and ease of use were always at the forefront of its development and still are.

But we lost discovery features and only one app in 5 years, not very fast in my books.

Youview has taken away great features like discovery mode, mini tv and hide channels mode. Why

It'd be interesting to see how quick the box is, my youview box is painfully slow since Nextgen arrived along with all the other issues I have. This Humax box only has to do a couple of things well and I'm outta here.

I know that customer reviews generally and those on Amazon in particular should be taken with a pinch of salt, but that pinch certainly provides food for thought on the existing 4000T model:

This is a very balanced opinion -
"So, as of today would you guys buy a new fvp-4000t? Have recent firmware updates made this box viable? I'm deciding between a Humax YouView box and this one - I'm basically interested in recording TV and occasional catch-up. Not bothered about DLNA because I have that covered with other devices and I don't need anything other than the main four on-demand services (BBC, ITV, C4 and C5). I use an XBox One as a media hub for everything else."

"Either might do the job. All the Youview boxes have just had a radical new user interface; I haven't used it much but it seems OK to me. Don't buy one of the DTR T1xxx series Youview boxes as they appear to have serious reliability issues; the DTR T2xxx boxes don't have the same level of complaint. The FVP-4000T is a marmite box; some people love it, some hate it. I think Humax have fixed the most serious bugs in the software but the most common complaint is about the users interface; I suggest you go into a retailer and play with the user interface and see if it seems workable to you."
