    unfortunately  many of my posts (comments) that are listed in my profile are actually comments made in the same thread  by others.see

    in this example the top comment is one I made and the next two are not my comments but seem to what other posters have said.

    If you click through to these comments, it takes you to your own comments. The reason that it's showing someone else's comment first is because you have quoted their post in your post (see below).

    Unfortunately the list of my comments is not showing Visionman said as illustrated in the actual post  you clicked thru.
    Now if I check your profle for your comments this is what I see

    so why don't I see visonman said in the original  example I posted which would make more sense although personally I would rather see my comment text .

    @Sarah I just tried to reply to a email notification again. When are you going to fix it as the text needs to be removed if you are not going to turn this useful feature on.

    @Sarah
    i am having a bunch of trouble with @ references, where sometimes the reference will follow me as I type, and jump into the text, often replacing what I have just typed, unbidden.

    iPad Pro, iOS 11.03, though it was happening before this particular release.

    Of course, it isn’t happening here; I can’t see any pattern as to why it sometimes happens and sometimes not :-(

    But perhaps Vanilla may know.

    When it happens on a post, though, it is very repeatable. Here is a screenshot, showing it on a temporary edit to an affected post I just made,

    https://community.youview.com/youview/discussion/comment/18990002/#Comment_18990002

    where it immediately popped up again, though I couldn’t get it to actually jump into my text here. I positioned my cursor on ‘my’, which the blue thing obediently followed me back to:-

    @Daniel
    We're working on getting this implemented, it's not the simplest of things to do so please bear with us.

    @Roy
    That's a bit strange! I'll have a look into this to see what's going on. Does this only happen on your iPad or does it happen on other devices you try as well?

    I know with usernames which have a space in-between, you need to have " "around the name (although it should add these for you if the name pops up in the box) so for the link you posted where Graham Lees name didn't @mention correctly, this should fix it. For usernames like this, it should look like @ "user name" (of course without the space between the @ & "). Once you go into preview it should like a regular @ mention.

    @Sarah

    From that posting (or even this one!) I see the behaviour on Chrome on my iPad, and Mozilla on my Dell laptop, [email protected]

    (There it went when I pressed Return, doing away with 'ws 10')

    I also just saw the whole post wiped out by a couple of @ Sarahs, but fortunately CTRL-Z works as Undo (whether in Vanilla or Mozilla I'm not sure, though I suspect it's Mozilla to the rescue here). @Sarah

    (Fooled it. Spaced five before pressing Return, so the @Sarah

    (Heh heh. Made it eat itself >:) )     @Sarah ;@Sarah

    @Sarah

    Anyway, here's a screenshot. As you will see, there's a gaggle of Sarahs to pick from; perhaps you can check if they are YouView Sarahs, or from the wider field of Vanilla Sarahs. @Sarah

    EDIT: Didn't fool it. Note how the 'fooled it' line is OK in the screenshot, but got eaten in the post as presented when I pressed Save Comment :(

    EDIT2: The Sarahs follow me, in Mozilla Firefox 56.0 at least, even on this Windows 7 non-touchscreen [email protected]
    and spray [email protected] opious interfering @Sarahs about, just as all the platforms I have tried so far [email protected]

    Badges can be funny things. I had quite a few and then they all vanished, perhaps because the Vanilla people were trying to work out why the points I had did not tally correctly. Since then badges for posts have come back, but the anniversary badges need a nudge @Sarah :)

    Thanks @Sarah for rapidly maturing my profile :)

    Hitting the 'High Five' above does make me feel though I would rather see that labelled as 'Like' and perhaps then a further one for those times one wants to give 'Thanks' :)

    Agree Keith, 'Like', 'Thanks' and 'Funny' would be good to have added.

    Quoting @Sarah due to a complaint about being OT in the thread this was aboriginally in:-

    Not all users will appear in the @mention list otherwise the list would be rather long.
    The reason it won't come up in the list when you're typing is most likely due to Vanilla not using spaces as part of usernames. As such, when you add the space, it thinks you've finished typing the name so the list will disappear.
    "Username can only contain letters, numbers, underscores, and must be between 3 and 20 characters long."
    You can preview your post before posting it to make sure the @mention is there and linked to the user you want it to be linked to.

    Yes the list of names can potentially be long, but as you type more letters and focus down on the one you want, it should come up. For example, Graham Perry does not come up until you have typed @grah.

    But he does come up, ‘illegal’ space and all, while Graham Lees doesn’t.

    So neither theory will hold, not the potentially large number of Grahams, nor the embedded space.  :/

    Despite having posted a picture avatar on GetSat, and this having transferred across successfully, I had not been awarded the Photogenic badge.

    (And no sarky comments please  :D )

    Tweaking the existing picture by a pixel or so resolved this injustice.

    But it may be worth you checking, @Sarah, if there are others likewise accidentally deprived.

    I assumed this might related to those user accounts that might have been used to test elements of the new forum system before it launched rather than to everyone. I just removed and re-added my avatar which then correctly updated the points and badges for that. I've not taken the time thought to look at points and badges of others to see if they have correctly received points for a picture (if one was carried over at the full and final import).

     The eight names of Roy, or some doubt on Vanilla’s case sensitivity

    As you had said Vanilla usernames were case sensitive, @Sarah, I thought I had better obtain myself ‘roy’, lest someone else did and caused confusion.

    However, it told me the name was unavailable. But rather than take this at face value, I tried all six remaining case combinations, e.g. roY, ROy, and so on.

    All were likewise unavailable, which makes me think that usernames are not in fact case sensitive. At least at registration time, if perhaps not in the migration process.

    I am pleased to report, though, that all the stars remain lit  o:)

    @Sarah Please note my edit to the bogus @Sarahs problem above:-

    and spray [email protected] opious interfering @Sarahs about, just as all the platforms I have tried so far [email protected]

    And apropos of your helpful suggestion to Preview my postings to see what they really look like, note that this option doesn't appear when you are editing :(

    NB: Please note that my barrage of annoyances and worse with Vanilla gives me no hankering to go back to GetSat. Rather, it bespeaks a confidence that you and Vanilla will be able to knock them on the head in a way, and at a response rate, that GetSat could only marvel at :D

    Just to clarify, we actually manually uploaded a bunch of avatars before we went live after the migration (this still triggered the badge allocation). Avatars didn't get bought across from GetSat, any that you saw on here as we launched was due to us adding them for regular users who we recalled having a non-default avatar :)

    It's likely that this may be a side effect of the previous points issue being fixed so it is something we'll bring up with Vanilla to see what's going on. I'll have a snoop at some other user accounts and see if they are missing any badges as well. Please note that accounts will only get badges if they've logged into the new forum, this doesn't apply for you guys but does for others if you notice a lack of badges on some accounts.

    In regards to the @mention issue, we are raising this with them as it is rather odd!!

    Lol. It would still be more advance than it is now. But at least we can do smiley faces on the forums now! Or could we do them on the old one? :blush:

    Apologies if these questions about the new forum aren't new...

    1) Is it possible to search within just one particular discussion (instead of the entire community)?

    2) Is it possible to opt out of email notifications pertaining to posted comments made by specific individuals?

    Certainly not!

    But if you can be a bit more specific about the issues you are experiencing, it may be possible to address these on Vanilla.

    @Manfred

    New to me, certainly, and good questions.

    Re 1), we have Advanced Search enabled, so if you start a search, maybe just type x, you will see a downward triangle on the right of the search bar; touch or click this, and a realm of other options to refine the search will open up.

    There’s some documentation on it here to help you maximise its effectiveness for you.

    Have a play with it, and see if it does what you want; do let us know either way.

    Re 2), I don’t think you can set this up in Vanilla (unless somebody knows different?)

    But if you want to suppress certain people, it’s useful to know that the From: field in the emails of their postings always starts with the user’s name.

    So you can write a rule to drop such postings on the floor in any sufficiently capable email product.

    At first sight, it may look as if Gmail isn’t capable enough to do this, on a smartphone or a tablet, but if you load the PC version, in a browser on a laptop say, then you have Settings/Filters where you can create rules to route mail from such users straight to the Bin, and this will then apply to all the devices on which you run Gmail.

    ' *Featured Topics ' doesn't work how I want it to :(

    It seems to just collapse the tiles at the top - I suspect that really I am just pressing the Collapse when I click on Featured Topics.

    What I want it to do, though, is filter the view of Topics so I only see Featured ones. I was looking for @Keith's Top Tip on Maintenance Mode, etc.,, which is featured second in Feedback, but is an absolute beggar to find if you don't know that.

    I figure there are too many Featured Topics to have them all permanently at the top of page 1 of the Home screen, but a selective collapse to just them, when required, would be ideal.

    I can't see how to achieve this from the Search.

    I would also love to know the algorithm that determines where they are placed; I see a couple almost permanently at the top of page one, but others sliding down below 'ordinary' postings. What are the rules that detemine these placements?

  • SarahSarah Posts: 963Administrator admin
    @Roy
    The Featured Topics tiles at the top are topics we've chosen to feature at the forefront of the community. At the moment they contain 3 different update posts as these tend to be the type of content users are viewing most.

    The home page works a little differently to the other pages on the community. We have two options for Featured Topics; Promote and Announce.

    The tiles are controlled by a 'Promote' feature. If a topic is promoted, it will be on a tile however it will not stay at the top of the list of topics like an ordinary featured topic does. Instead it'll stay in the post order mixed in with the other posts. This is the case as you will most likely have already seen the tile of the topic.

    Anything we are not promoting but still want to be seen easily by users will be 'Announced' as a Featured Topic which gives them the blue outline and the marker on the thread. You will notice that in the category sections, all Featured Topics float to the top regardless of how old the thread is.

    We have the option of featuring topics to the category they're posted in only or featuring them on the front page as well as the category.

    The two featured topics on the home page won't always be there. Once we feel that most visiting users know how to use the community and the view counts for these threads have reduced, we'll remove them from the featured topic list on the home page. We'll most likely leave them featured in Feedback for a little while instead after this. Once there's more spaces freed up on the home page, we'll look at what topics should be featured at the top of the list there.

    Thanks,
    Sarah
