Playback Banner Malfunction - Massive Improvement :)

I've just watched a recording on my box and was absolutely delighted that the playback banner didn't spoil my enjoyment of the programme as it usually does when using pause, rewind or fast-forward...

Unfortunately the recording ended early so my viewing was still ruined :(

The banner malfunction meant I could pause and go forward and back without a massive banner taking out the bottom 20% of my screen. Naturally, I couldn't see my position in the recording, or the speed of forward/rewind but this didn't matter.

If there was ONE suggestion that could massively improve YouView it would be for a less obstructive banner - or one where the timeout before disappearance could be controlled in Settings (10 sec, 5 sec, 3sec, 0 sec) as with Sky+ boxes.

I really struggled with McMafia in recent weeks when I had to rewind to reread subtitled sections that I'd missed. The banner would stay there for ages and by the time it dismissed itself the section I wanted to rewatch had passed. Massively frustrating...  :(

One for the developers if they bother to check this forum.

  • That was one function I loved about the Sky+ boxes. I had my timeout set at zero so never had to put up with the banner.

wholenutpeanut    -- press the Back button immediatly to see an unencumbered picure & read the sub-titles ..... you have to be quick tho, or it will return to the Recordings Folder Menu !

Thanks Newfy, have tried using Back but the risk of being accidentally booted out of the recording and back to the recordings list is just too great.

I do seem to be watching a lot of drama/documentaries with subtitles lately (McMafia, Simon Reeve, Nigel Slater...) so not an insignificant issue.

During playback on Sky+ the whole 'Search and Scan' banner would not appear, just a small pause/ff/rw/position indicator in the bottom left that would rarely conceal subtitling.

@Robert I used to have timeout set to zero as well.

To be honest, if Sky didn't disable recording at the end of the subscription I'd still be using Sky+ for recordings and would not be using YouView.

you get 4 or 5 seconds, pretty small risk ... and anyway the recording will start where you left off, so not a disaster ....

A fine example of Sky failing to value and retain customer loyalty. If I was still regularly using the Sky+ box I'd maybe still consider adding Sky services in the future. As I now own a subscription-free box from YouView this seems less likely...

Sky have "resolved" this long-standing bugbear by rolling out their own Next Gen in the form of Sky Q, where customers are no longer allowed to keep their boxes.   ;)

Pressing "Back" immediately removes the banner. Pressing "Close" exits you from the recording, but you still remain on the tile you were watching.
I'm now happy with the disagree icon, because its gone.

20% of the screen is a bit understating it Peanut. Top and bottom banners take up about 40% of the screen overall. I agree that it's one of the very worst things about Nextgen, and it's a huge list. As you say, even just an adjustable timeout would make a massive difference.
  • Couldn't agree more @DaveGrohl - hadn't considered the top part of the banner as it doesn't cover the subtitles.

@Visionman - yeah, thanks, the Back button works fine but it's still a pain that the playback banner takes up so much screen space in the first place.
