The context there was that the OP could not close their own account.

    And this still obtains.

There are several posters on here who are particularly hostile with many newcomers , it doesn't do the community any favours.

If you have not come across it before, @ilaff, there are hours of fun to be had at this resource, just trying to figure out who on this forum fits which profile.

I know who I am (or at least who I think I am nearest to). But who are you going to be?  :D

Seeing some of the exchanges and interactions of late on this forum reminded me of some past occasions when it has not been as harmonious and supporting as everyone would like, whether it be intentional or through misunderstanding. In particular I recalled these (very) old topics (to name but two):

I would like to think (almost) everyone remains welcome here and that the conversation is largely seen as inclusive and supportive by all again, such that more people contribute to the discussion, less people simply stop reading, and that in general almost no one feels it necessary to have their account deleted. If people do continue to feel it necessary to have their accounts deleted then the records of the topics will become the poorer for it too (and as with this topic become populated with posts attributed to [deleted user] which does not look great) :(

Comparatively speaking I do not post that often these days but I do still read everything (and maintain the consolidated lists as appropriate). I look forward to a return to a more steady stream of interesting, helpful and informative postings, and if I were really optimistic, a YouView release with some juicy new features and players in that we can all get excited over ;)

    Hi @ilaff

I hope you won’t mind me asking, but what is it you joined this forum for, and what did you hope to get out of it?

As, judging from your remarkably short tenure here, this does not seem to have been fulfilled for you  :'(

And we haven’t even ever found out what YouView box you have, or how we might have helped improve your experience of it.

    Hi all,

Regarding the recent issues on the community over the weekend, I would like to reiterate that all users are welcome to post on the community.

Some of the posts we've seen over the weekend have not been on terms with our Community Guidelines and we are disappointed to have seen these conversations even start and then escalate in such a manner.

Unfortunately due to staff shortages on Friday, we weren't able to deal with some of the posts as quickly as we usually would. Regardless of staffing numbers, we would still expect the community to function with appropriately and with respect as it has done on multiple occasions when staff coverage has been thinner.
I have now cleaned up the forum and removed the offending posts and any linked to them. Phil has contacted users regarding this particular incident and the account removal requests received. Please note that we do not publicise any information shared in these private conversations as the discussion is between us and the users.

It has been mentioned previously however I feel it needs reiterating that users take in the below advice:
    • Read the Community Guidelines and keep their posts appropriate for the community
    • Ignore and report inappropriate posts - Other users do not see any reports you make so please do not see this as an immature or childish way of dealing with a situation. If you prefer, email us at [email protected] and link the thread/posts so we can look into it.
    • Do not reply or react to provocative posts
    • Avoid interacting with users whom you know you do not get along well with

I understand that it can be frustrating when someone says something targeted at you which is not within the spirit of the community and the natural reaction is to defend yourself, however this causes it to escalate further and not only causes arguments, but also pull a thread way off topic. This can be incredibly off putting for new users who just want to leave some feedback or ask a question about the latest BT release.

We have some great helpers on the community and we want all members to feel happy posting whether it's asking questions or giving feedback without getting the impression that they will be attacked simply for being new.

All users are welcome to provide help and assistance to those who need it, if you have knowledge to share which can help someone else, please by all means do so, the more the merrier! We really appreciate all users who take the time out of their day to help others, it's really in the community spirit and what makes online communities a great place to go for assistance.

I would also like to add that posting about Trials releases is not allowed on this community and any feedback you have regarding a Trial version of software should be fed back to our Trials team who are contactable through the Trials programme.
If you have a version of software which has no public release details, please email us at [email protected] and we can investigate this further.

@ilaff I can see that you only created your account at the weekend, unfortunately we cannot contact you via email as you created your account using a 10 Minute Mail email address. If possible, please change your email address to one you can use and email us using that same email so we can verify that you'd like the account closing and we can proceed with the request.

If anyone has any further questions, feel free to reply here, PM me or drop us an email and we can discuss there instead :)

    Thanks,
    Sarah

@Sarah I decided not to post anything in the previous thread in question at all but I did see the posts. I'm still of the opinion that moderators would be a good idea I know YouView don't share this opinion unfortunately.

What I will say is I find it disappointing that users have wanted to leave the forum. As you can imagine not everyone will get along in life its just a massive shame that they couldn't find a middle ground and stay a member here.

    @Daniel

Sarah and Phil do moderate the forum, as can be seen from the posts they decide to remove.

Strict moderation would mean every post went to them to look at, before it could appear in the forum; I’m sure few if any of us would want that.

There might be a case that any new member’s first post(s) should receive moderation, but this would on balance, just delay the help such posts often need, for the sake of avoiding a few spammers from time to time.

I’m greatly in favour of the current reactive light touch, rather than any heavy, proactive, oversight.

@roy sure there certainly is a such thing as to much moderation but I'm wondering if there is a happy medium place.

    Hi @Daniel

Whilst I appreciate that having moderators could work well for the community, there are some aspects where it may not work as well.
In events such as the one from the weekend, if a moderator is away, they may also not see the posts and they will remain until either they come back or we're back in the office. There's also the case of post removal and what is/isn't being removed. What may be acceptable for one person may not be acceptable for others and what we don't want is posts which are fine being removed when we're not around. We cannot reinstate posts once they've been removed.
This can also interfere with the moderation process. When we remove problem posts, we send the user a message to let them know why their posts have been removed, give an explanation why and start a conversation around the situation. This would not happen if a non-staff member was removing the posts and we do not wish to put this responsibility onto them either.
From past experience of other communities, it can also cause issues for the moderator, especially when other users know who they are/are friends with them as they are less likely to remove comments from their friend or certain people in case they receive some backlash from them or a rift is created between a few users.

We have a spam filter on which I check a few times a day at present and in the last 7 days, this has caught 8 new users who would otherwise have spammed the forum with potentially harmful links, bumped old threads and posted walls of text. Each of these users had at least 2 posts caught in the filter as well which, without the filter, would have made it onto the forum. I understand that this isn't always ideal for new users if their posts get caught however we feel the good the filter does outweighs the bad. This could be an area a moderator could assist with, but only in terms of fishing out non-spam as we need to monitor any genuine spam for our records and also ban the user. This part would definitely require quite a high element of trust to ensure that spam is being left and real posts are being published and effectively marked as non-spam with any duplicate posts also being removed. Along with this, it's also the added responsibility on the user who may be worried in case they make a mistake, mark something as spam when it's not and remove the genuine user's posts.

I hope that all makes sense :)

    Sarah

@Sarah I just seen your post I understand what you are getting at I can appreciate it would be very difficult to find someone who would call it down the middle and not favour one or the other. Obviously if you ever went down the road you would have to find someone who would follow the forum rules to the letter no matter who posted which would be difficult. In regards to the spam filter if you ever appointed someone for this. If there not sure if a post is spam or not and to prevent any errors that person could perhaps screenshot what they are removing before hand so should a issue arise they can post the screenshot of the post or email it to you obviously if you ever appoint someone.

Once, many years ago, moderation by the regular users on here was discussed and then after debate rejected out of hand. And there were three reasons for that -
    1. Such moderation powers would require the rank of 'Champion', which everyone felt uncomfortable with and would only by implication restrict what they could or couldn't say on an open forum in a normal discussion.
    2. One could be seen as being biased (and not neutral) towards certain users but not others.
    3. Such user moderators would be open to a lot of criticism, which again could (and probably would) cause a lot of friction.
I believe this also answers another long-standing question of yours - why there aren't more forum Champions on here? I hope I've now answered that. :)
