Another 'content-free' update  ... when oh when will one be able to 'Jump to required Time' in a long recording ?
  • NewfyNewfy Member Posts: 55
.... and why not list the bugs fixed ?

Is 29.58.0 applicable to T2110? The page linked to in the first post of this thread doesn't specifically say that it does! (It turned out that it wasn't applicable to T2110 when it was offered to me during the trial period and I queried why it didn't arrive 😂)

    From the update page ....
"This is a maintenance release so there are no new features in this release."

Our software was updated earlier today to version 29.58.  This has resulted in a change to the YouView, Guide and various other screens.  The text is now in white on a black background and this makes it difficult for people such as my wife who have visual impairment.  As of yesterday, she had no problem seeing the Recordings and Scheduled screens but now she struggles.  Apparently, this software update cannot be undone.

So this update has resulted in reduced accessibility - marvellous!

Can you specify which model of YouView box you have?

Are you aware of High Contrast Mode? Settings/Accessibility & Language/Appearance/High Contrast Colours.

If this is set to Off, try setting it to On, (and vice versa) and see if she finds that helpful at all.

Having said that, though, I’m not aware that it wasn’t always white text in NextGen, on whatever the background was.

And no, software updates cannot be reversed. Otherwise, vast swathes of users would have reverted to OldGen, and that would never do, now would it?

    Our box is a DTRT2100.

Yes, we are aware of all of this and have tried everything.  Nothing affects the fact that the text is white on a black background and that this is more difficult to see than what it was yesterday.

Why can't the updates/fixes just leave the viewing alone?  Our TV was set so that we could watch it without a problem.  Now the colours on the Guide screen and MyBT Recordings and Scheduled screens have changed and cannot be amended - i.e. black background with white writing.  Having gone through all the settings and appearance etc it cannot be changed.  I have macular degeneration and am now no longer able to see the text as clearly as before: I am extremely upset that I have no choice and cannot change this to a colour scheme that suits me.

Any and all users who are having sight problems with the new GUI (screen) contact YouView directly via here and state what the (specific) problem is -  [email protected]
And they'll either contact you or get one of the BT team to do it. Please include your preferable contact method, including your telephone number.

I don’t understand the complaints about text on YouView being white on a black background, because looking back through old and new YouView User Guides, both Retail and BT, the text has always been white, forever.

I know the background colour has changed recently for BT users, and this has caused mixed reactions, but there isn’t any change to the white on black in this scheme, AFAIK.

And High Contrast users would not be affected by these BT changes anyway, as it is always white on black with this. And again, always was, AFAIR.

Added to which this is supposed to have been a maintenance release, with no new features visible to the user (colour scheme changes like BT have made aren’t embedded in the releases, but can be done out-of-band, again AFAIK).

But I can’t think that High Contrast used to be black text, on whatever background, and this has been switched on people with no announcement of such a significant accessibility change. Whether in a release or as an out-of-band change.

OTOH, a couple of users above are clearly unhappy that something has apparently changed here. But what?

One observation about the guide  and I wonder whether this is contributing to vision issues is that available programmes are highlighted so that to me they seem in brighter/bolder text to those that are not available to play. By available I mean the currently on now or the available to play on demand programmes. Have a look at the EPG with say ch 202 as the first channel in the EPG.

So the user is presented with rows of channels that have (full or partial or in some cases no ) programme names that have a mixture of bold and ordinary entries.

To anyone thats having problems, I've hopefully given the correct advice above.
However, privately, which I'm now making public, I've been wondering if there are no sight issues with the new GUI and its quite simply down to some people just don't like change.

IF that is the case, to quote an oldie but goodie Western film, then "Get the hell of of Dodge", because there are expected to be substantial updates and changes coming to YouView this year. And yes Keith, that does mean before Christmas.  :D

Whilst change can indeed be unwanted, surprising and unwelcome, where feedback is about accessibility matters I think it warrants specific consideration and understanding. At the moment I'm as confused as Roy's post above since I would have thought nothing should have changed with the high contrast theme and that the only other change should be for BT ISP connected boxes that are now on the new BT theme, of which I have limited understanding but from the comments so far it sounds mostly like a background/core colour change from light blue to purple?

Hopefully someone with a box that has not change and someone else with one that has can post some screenshots so we can all better understand the issue better.

Heard that one before last Christmas

I can see the highlighted programme on my Guide screenshot in Visionman's post as a bit of an issue compared to YouViews guide (above).

I don't see any issue with white on black(ish), also remember I have transparency on which can be turned off, but the black on white of the selected programme is quite difficult. I would have thought the High Contrast option would solve this but I have to admit I haven't tried it.

I thought the question everyone wants the answer to is -

What will this weekends lottery numbers be :)

They even have the new colour scheme and logos already on the microphone covers in the last screenshot (very proficient) :)

Well it's corporate branding, but I suspect everyone with a BT box is grateful that the box doesn't yet play that awful jingle at boot up time that BT have on their TV advertising. :s

The issue here is for a viewer with impaired sight, not someone with normal vision.

Why is there is no Edit Channel button on the Youview EPG screenshot ?

And how come the 14th is a Wednesday?  :p

@zulu17, I think the guide @Scott referenced was YouView’s User Guide, not YouView’s EPGuide.

Fp I absolutely hate the new look to BTTV’s guide. Whoever walked into work and designed this horrible thing needs shooting, I phoned BT and they suggested to have a BT engineer come out for some reason, I was cancelling my package and will still do so over this. How depressing and dark does a Sony Bravia 55” 4K tv have to look. I have the latest Ultra 1TB 4K vieing box well 2 if I’m honest and what a sad sight they now are.

skyQ got the right idea keeping it 2020 and not 1996 like BT have chosen to do. I give the new BTTV update a 0 out of 10 because I really hate it.

Just updated a spare T2 box to 29.58 & I see where you're coming from. I'll keep my main T2 on 29.53 until anything worthwhile comes along & my Ultra box will probably stay on 26.41 for the remainder of it's life.

Far from no new features, an unwanted one has been added: FAILD TO RECORD!  Having just returned from working away, 14 programs failed to record. Plenty of space on hard drive, re-tuned a few days before I left. What is the point of a PER that fails to record. Every update makes it worse. My mother has a non interconnected DTRT2100, with pre Next Gen software, it is a vastly superior PER!

This failure to record is an ongoing issue that BT & Youview are investigating. BT are giving some updates on progress but Youview nothing, just asking for info on failures.
This is probably nothing to do with any of the recent updates as it only started to occur en masse after the recent Freeview re-tunes and has affected my OldGen boxes as well.

    Hi Peter,

The box failing to record is an issue we are currently investigating as it's occurring across numerous devices and does not appear to be update specific as it's affecting boxes on different software versions. This thread has more information from other users on what they are experiencing.

We are exploring various avenues for this to work out the root cause and our team are working hard to get this resolved as soon as possible. Due to this, it'd be helpful if you could send me a private message with your postcode in along with your YV box model so I can forward this onto the team. A list of the programmes and the channels they're on is also useful to know.

    Thanks,
    Sarah
