Possibly jumping to conclusions , but it sounds to me like it will be delivered over BT’s multicast network, unless Youview have implemented a way to record the nowtv unicast streams?
This makes me doubt whether the rest of YouView will see a full Nowtv app? Hopefully we will as part of the BT/sky deal.
Can Youview confirm whether the full nowtv app will come to the whole of YouView next year?
At the minute I think BTTV does both a NowTV app (only movies) AND broadcasts the movie channels on its multicast network. So possibly something similar with a full NowTV app available to all (minus recording ability) and the separate channels via multicast (recordable) through BTTV only...
Oh didn’t realise BT already did that with the Nowtv movies. Are the movies already recordable? Though I guess not much point in recordable movies as they’re all on demand anyway
They also have 2 sports channels on multicast also (HD and SD variants) which again are already recordable. I never bothered with the movies as they are limited to SD quality on both the app and the multicast streams but I am sure they are recordable already also.
It will be nice if they add the entertainment channels, all the sports channels and up the resolution to HD on the existing movies (although still only just passable in this day when the app on my TV does UHD and HDR for Netflix and Amazon).
Yeah I think HD on nowtv cinema is a must. I think I read that they’re eventually going to use 1080p. At the moment it’s limited to 720p on most devices other than Youview, which as we know is stuck at SD for now
I thought the current position for BT users was the same as for YouView generally in respect of NOW TV i.e. movies on demand only via the app. BT also gives subscribers the additional option to pay for Sky Cinema via multicast channels, as does TalkTalk.
@redchiz - that is correct. The only difference between NowTV movie package and Sky Cinema is the price and the ability to record (Sky Cinema still have an on-demand section in the BT Player). With BT stating NowTV will be recordable unlike any other NowTV device I presume that means they will just convert what they are doing now with Sky Cinema into NowTV and charge accordingly, I am only guessing but just stating what is available now and putting 2 and 2 together. Of course the reality could be different but I can't see them having recording ability through the standard app with a unicast feed so I would guess they will use the multicast broadcast feed to record and extend it to other channels (most are already allocated an EPG slot through the TalkTalk availability). Which going back to the original point I don't think Retail will have a recordable option but may have the full app experience. Again this is all just my 2 cents and could very easily be wrong.
Ah right - I was getting the Sky cinema channel confused with the nowtv movies channel. So BT currently have the sky tv channels in the EPG, and not the nowtv channels ( yet) ?
There aren’t any ‘NowTV channels’ as such - just Sky channels provided on NowTV Entertainment, which can be watched live, as well as all the programmes from them which can be watched on-demand.
The live Sky channels can be provided by Sky to watch over IP on BT TV, are amenable to being supplied by multicast, and likewise to being recorded.
The movies and on-demand programmes must unavoidably be unicast.
But recorded? I can’t see Sky rewriting NowTV just for BT (though ICBW), but they can do it as I describe to provide an equivalent to app-provided NowTV, with recording possible on the live channels, using the existing setup.
So I can’t see the on-demand movies on NowTV becoming recordable, and as redchiz says, there isn’t much need for that; though we should be aware that movies do cycle on and off the roster.

It will be interesting to see how it is implemented and the TV guide integration and ability to record live channels is a plus over using the standard NOW TV app for those that like to keep everything in one place.
I believe the live NOW TV channels use multicast the same as the additional BT TV channels, so there is no issue there, but I am intrigued by what they will do where there is channel crossover.
What I mean by this is, there are channels included in the premium BT TV channel packs that also form part of the NOW TV entertainment pass (such as Gold, SYFY, Comedy Central, Discovery and MTV) and the kids channels packs are basically identical for example. I doubt anyone wants to pay twice for the same content!
So I wonder if they will have a different entertainment pass that only features the channels not available in a BT TV pack or do something different?
Likewise I assume the NOW TV Sky Cinema and Sky Sports passes will replace the current Sky Cinema and Sky Sports packs as you get more channels (potentially in better quality), for less money with NOW TV.
I can see some major changes to BT TVs channel packs, but I guess we will have to wait and see how it all shakes out.
I may or may not get Now TV when it comes to BT depending on price and the added recording feature will be good. I would get it for the entertainment package. As although I do watch movies and sport im more in to TV box sets and stuff. Just wondering if my sister would be able to use Now TV on my account via her Apple TV 2nd gen box if I got it via BT.
Darren> "Just wondering if my sister would be able to use Now TV on my account via her Apple TV 2nd gen box if I got it via BT."
Your sister nor anyone else would be able to use it period. As it will be IP box specific. I have no idea about apps on the go. Though would strongly doubt it.
I'm now happy with the disagree icon, because its gone.
I would disagree, just as an example SKY are now doing Netflix billing through themselves but you can still log in as normal into Netflix on other devices and I would expect this to work exactly the same. So you would still be able to log in through an app on up to 4 devices as you can now. BT are making their app showing thier multicast channels available on a multitude of devices (Apple TV, Samsung smart TVs, Amazon fire, as well as all the normal iOS/android) so I can't see them locking down an app to a single box. You state it is too early so no one should speculate and then you try and make a statement as if you know something won't work, what knowledge do you have that the rest of us don't.
Well, agree or disagree, not long to wait now in platform terms. Just back end changes to be made. Then the proof will be in the eating of the pudding. I'm expecting around March, but that is just a complete guess.

I had an email today stating now tvs upcoming new app will no longer work with older youview boxes. It said my account history shows i have used one of these boxes that is becoming obsolete, i only have a dn372t and bt 2100. I guess this is part of this new recordable option you are describing. Though i don`t understand why anyone would record on demand programs...
Because what you said made no sense to me, which is, I have to say, very commonplace.
@scott pretty much summed up in his reply exactly what my thoughts were, ie:
Why would @Darren's NowTV account be "IP box specific"? It may well be purchased from BT, but surely the subscription is still a NowTV subscription which can be used on any other device (subject to the maximum number of devices stipulation, obviously).
Or am I missing something in the way you think NowTV will be delivered via BTTV?

I buy what @scott said. It’s how Netflix on BT TV works.
And, coming at it from the other direction, if someone already has a NowTV subscription and a BT TV subscription, how pleased would they be to be told they needed a further NowTV subscription to use NowTV on BT TV?

Davey - your post is intriguing. I still stand by my post that if you subscribe to NowTV via BT you will still have access on other devices through an account login BUT if they are removing the app from the YouView box when the new version is released (they have been working on new versions on most devices ready for moving to 1080p streams) this could mean it could only be available on BT boxes through multicast channels with BT possibly adding it through a bundle as per SKY/Netflix ultimate on demand add On. Can YouView comment on if the NowTV app is due to be removed/replaced and for which boxes as this could affect people subscribing and watching on YouView only (small if any). Interesting times. i am guessing the ‘older boxes’ reference will just mean the same as the Amazon app though and it will go from JUST the really old boxes as per the amazon app details (when it finally makes an appearance).

Those are what you have now.
But did you ever have a T1000 that you stopped using and never told YouView about?
