Multicast is just a format. Netflix and Amazon already do 4K HDR with Dolby Atmos over Wi-fi so why such a hard problem. Mesh Wi-fi can do massively more than the 35Mbps required and they have already said the Apple TV sports app will do live 4K with HDR. Plus I already did 4K over the standard Wi-fi from the new smart hub without issue, HDR on top is a small additional payload. personally I never rely on Wi-fi for anything I want with high quality.
of course it is all mainly my own personal opinion. I actually believe the new box will not have any Wi-fi built in. My opinion is that BT will try to get people to pay the £5 a month for complete Wi-fi and with that they will supply a new smart hub and as many discs as you need to cover the whole house (and we know you can simply plug a cable from the Ethernet port on a stb to the Ethernet port on a disc and get full multicast over Wi-fi). This gives BT a foothold to many things in your house while getting a monthly payment, which is what any business wants. The box could of course have a disc built in like the smart hub does but only time will tell on that. i don’t think multicast is the issue (it is only a single stream into your home but just wrapped in a protocol that everything needs to understand), the bigger issue is live as that can’t be compressed on the fly as tightly as the pre done on demand can that Netflix and amazon supply, but it is possible.
Course I bloody can't so if you don't want to believe me don't. But I would ask scott....
As you will see from my reply to Stephen Bristow, suggesting the exact opposite, I maintain a healthy neutral scepticism about all unsupported reports of the likelihood or otherwise of a new box.
Naturally, I would like to believe you; but you haven’t said enough to get me over the line. As ever, I suggest, if you are bound by some strange NDA of a type I haven’t come across that lets you mention the fact of a thing but not the details of the thing, that you refer to something that means nothing to us at the moment, but which will reveal incontrovertibly that you knew something now, if/when a new box comes out.
Othwerwise, even if a new box does come out, there will be nothing to show that you actually knew about it now; if you toss a coin and I call ‘heads’, and it is ‘heads’, that does not prove that I knew what is was going to be, just that the physics would ensure I was right about half of the time

And multicast is an issue because by its nature there is no possibility of retries for missed packets. So unless WiFi can be at least as rock solid as Ethernet, multicast over WiFi would be problematic.
My experience is that WiFi here is that solid, but this may not be the case for everyone; and certainly, the makers of my Hive Hub seem to think the same way, as this too is a device you can only hang on Ethernet, not WiFi.

Guys, I have now replaced 3 PLA's for 3 Extenders that I had. Just connected them to the Talktalk Youview boxes and one Humax - all streaming beautifully - Netflix, iPlayer and live sky sports (multicast). Absolutely no pixel issues. Wifi very stable. I suggest you move to Talktalk, much cheaper - they give my Sky channels for £5 and Sky Sports £8.50 (on an 18 month deal). Also the modem/router is excellent and they upgraded me for free.

SD quality? not free HD channels, iplayer, Netflix, etc - Sky Sports is significantly better than normal Sky SD. I have multi-room, Sky in three rooms playing different channels for £2 monthly , can BT do this for that cost. Most of Youview channels are SD, is that different with BT?
Yes nearly all BT's extra channels are available in HD quality and with Amazon and Netflix available in 4K also and BT Sports in 4k with dolby atmos.
BT Channels (extra and sports) are available on a multitude of apps for watching in any room or mobile (Fire TV, Apple TV, Samsung app, Chromecast, IOS, Android etc).
There never will be a new box. Freeview play will be the default for freeview catch up as bt do a deal with apple . Youview will soldier on with the occasional pointless software update that nobody needs and which actually makes things worse for the viewers
Thanks for that constructive debate enhancing input.
Thanks for being so patronising. I've just looked through your contributions to this forum - which didn't take long. This confirmed the impression that I'd formed - a steady dripfeed of negativity and a repetition of your views about YouView's lack of wifi.
To say that there never will be a new box is just plain stupid.
@roy, Roy on previous comments, did you indicate that Now Tv was not built into Youview? It's been built into mine for a few years. TT also support the BT Sports channels (only SD) and contract via BT. They have most of the Sky stuff and multi-room working well. Seems to me with TT having a neutral position around content, they can progress the Youview offering - I don't know what the current TT Youview beta trial scope is - but more HD, Amazon Prime built in and some Alexa integration would be a good start. That OS would be ideal for some open TV providers.
YouView has NowTV Movies, a rather scant 1,000 when there are about 20,000 out there, but not Entertainment (so no GoT, plus many other desirable programmes) nor Sport (which seems to matter to a lot of people).
What would you class as an open TV provider? Do you have some examples? Anyone who puts stuff on Freeview, as the Smithsonian channel shortly will, fetches up on your YouView box automatically, so who is open, and yet not on Freeview?

@roy, Roy on previous comments, did you indicate that Now Tv was not built into Youview? It's been built into mine for a few years.
Hi fusemonk. All players and apps on YouView aren't actually built into the platform. What the platform does is provide 'Portals' to such, so that when you press enter takes you directly to source. And its from there content is accessible.
I note you mention you want more HD on TalkTalk, but what HD is already available?
I'm now happy with the disagree icon, because its gone.
@roy Now TV has sport passes. You can also get the sky movies package and all the sky sports with standard TT Sky deals, so overall its feels like a pretty comprehensive package - money no object. Although like a previously stated I get Sky main channels, plus on demands and sky sports for £13.50 all in three rooms.
Open TV providers - I'm looking at future on Freeview and Youview, each TV will have an in built TV OS freeview most common. TV companies are looking for the best OS going forward and my point being that maybe the TT implementation may have the best potential going forward. @Visionman TT Youview has BT and Sky channels inbuilt into its EPG etc..yes I understand that the Players and Apps are plug-ins however I feel its the best chance of a one stop interface. The BBC EPG interface to play programmes from the start shows what could be done across all main channels. It It has all main channel catch up players, Now TV, Netflix and when it adds Amazon Prime it has it covered. a bit of Alexa interface - new Youview box maybe - then it feels like the right direction.
HD question - only the 8 or so freeview HD channels, again maybe more commercials than technology.
Also its more than Portals - it needs bi-direction interface - standardise API's would help - improvements in this area are key. We've seen improved interoperability over the years and it needs to continue - commercial interests are the main problem.
You are saying that you can buy a NowTV Sports pass, and use it to watch sport on NowTV on your TalkTalk YouView box?
That is not my understanding of what is possible.
Yes, you can get a NowTV Sports pass and watch sport on a NowTV box, or a NowTV stick, or the NowTV app on practically any platform other than YouView.
But not on YouView. Not unless TalkTalk have done a very recent deal with NowTV to allow this, stealing a march on BT in the process.
And yes, you can watch Sky Sports on a TalkTalk box, I think. But not in the NowTV app.
So is this just something you think you can do, but you haven’t actually tried it, or is is something you think you have done, specifically, redeeming a NowTV Sports pass on NowTV on a TalkTalk YouView box?
And if so, can you please post a screenshot demonstrating this, so I can revise my thinking accordingly?

@Roy just went in they have changed the Now TV offering, it now has all movies type stuff. It did previously give sports but must have been removed - you used to have the 1 day pass, 7 day pass etc....so I guess its only through the Sky Sports option that TT gives you. Apologies I'd didn't go into Now TV to check the latest offerings, I just knew it was still there.
