Virgin used to be able to claim it was the only place to watch both sky and BT sports. With Sky sports soon to be offering BT alongside its sports packages sky/bt are more then likely to want to offer UHD as the icing on the cake to entice subscribers.

I'd give it up mate. Due to commercial changes in the background everythings now up for grabs. SKY on BT, BT on SKY and Virgin just get everything. They spent years slitting each others throats but now realise co-operation is the way forward. And the cheapest. And I'd be amazed if there weren't a few new services coming to YouView in 2019.  ;)

Looks like BT are planning to charge "from £5" for the HDR addon. Unfortunately I've lost the link from the BT page that mentions it  :(

**EDIT** found the link  :D https://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Sport-on-TV-Online-player-or/Free-HDR-viewing-for-the-UEFA-Champions-League-2019/td-p/1946155
When will I be able to buy HDR?
BT Sport’s new HDR service will launch for the BT Sport app ahead of the new football season. It will offer picture quality of up to 4K resolution from just £5 per month

Tempted to pick up an Apple TV 4K just for this one game :D although I might take a gamble instead and wait to see if the HDR football comes to Roku at some stage. I have a Roku Streaming Stick+ which does HDR. One can dream  :D

I see someone on the BT Forum pages saying that BT seem to be leaving their Youview service behind to put the better features (eg. HDR) onto their apps instead. I've only recently upgraded to the 4K box, and am quite happy with what I get on it, but it is disappointing that HDR is only available via apps, none of which I can access in a way to get HDR, unless I buy a new device, and that BT haven't invested in a HDR capable box to provide the same level of service to ALL paying customers.

BT have lost interest in youview, everything is geared up for the sport
Have sald in the past that they never mention youview in their ads and their current one proudly boasts lots of ways to enjoy the final in HDR again omitting any mention of it's own pay TV platform.

BT's sport portfolio is pretty slim really, blockbusters like the Champions League Final between two English clubs being an exceptional fluke. And most of the viewing figures will come from non-subscribers.

And BT haven't "advertised" YouView for years, neither have TalkTalk, why would they? It doesn't alter the fact that it remains the platform on which their TV service is based.

Over the years BT, TalkTalk, KCom, Plusnet, Manx Telecom & KC have never mentioned YouView to advertise their TV services, even though its the platform they have all used to show & sell their wares on. As such nothing can or should be read into it. Unless your a YouView basher of course, looking for any and every opportunity to slate it. Over time there have unfortunately been a few on here up to no good. Thankfully they've never lasted long.

But as to the topic - The BT DTR T4000 is quite an old box and the first ever to introduce 4K on a TV box platform, with Netflix & Amazon already having it for relevant equipment users.

The format the BBC, BT & NHK decided upon, Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) isn't decodable by a T4000 as its tech is too old but a new 4K box is expected by many including me. The only question is when?

I'm happy to be an early adopter when, or if, such a box arrives  :) Like I said above, I'm happy with what I have at the present time from BT on the 4K box, for other 4K stuff I have the Roku Stick+ as it does HDR. I'm just a greedy so-and-so who likes trying out new kit etc so a shiny new HDR enabled Youview box would be right up my street  :D

For those knocking Youview, yes it has its flaws but let's face it what device or platform doesn't, but even with some 'old gen' functionality being removed I still find it to be a very useful service and complements the rest of my subscriptions very well indeed.

I'm all for honest criticism, so long as it's measured and justified, but have no time for those bashing any platform or service just for the heck of it.

    Anyway.....
HDR or monochrome,  all that really matters is that the mighty reds make it 6.

@Goodbye, your punishment is 405 lines.

Do it again, and you will get 625 lines.

Interesting comments here https://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Sport-on-TV-Online-player-or/Free-HDR-viewing-for-the-UEFA-Champions-League-2019/td-p/1946155/page/2 by a 'BT Sport Expert' on the BT community forum to this question why no HDR on the BT Youview Box where he states the difficulty is that adding HDR capability to hardware like the YouView box is a much longer and more difficult process (ie. swapping out millions of boxes across the country) than adding HDR to our digital apps (mobile and large screen)Do keep your eyes peeled re. TV box as that will follow in the not too distant future! But unfortuantely we weren't able to do in time for this final. In the following post he goes on to say keep your eyes peeled re. YouView box in the not too distant future, as I can assure you it isn't forgotten!. My wallet is getting a tingly feeling  :D

You will also see on that thread that a few us noted how poor the HDR stream was. Saw a lot of complaints about the YouTube stream as well.

The Youtube stream was never going to be good, just as last years wasn't, with Youtube's output set at 30fps and the match being filmed at 25fps.

I'm surprised BT haven't gone with the HLG standard preferred by the BBC etc for HDR output.

I saw this mentioned on social media last night and I admit to being confused as I thought the 4K channel through YouView was 50fps?

I assumed that would be the “main feed” then it would be downscaled as necessary for other delivery methods?

That said, I read somewhere they did have separate cameras for the HDR feed. They have zero chance of securing an extra £5 off anyone until they improve it though.

HDR10 by the looks of it, but that is a guess on my part.

The format is HDR10 PQ since alternative format HLG works less well on mobile – and mobile is the telco’s primary target for the HDR service

    https://www.ibc.org/production/bt-sport-on-target-for-hdr-first-at-uefa-champions-league-final/3899.article

The HDR feed is being produced out of a Telegenic truck and made available to BT Sport’s 5 million+ subscribers through the BT Sport app, and via mobile devices, taking advantage of the HDR displays on most new handsets as well as on devices including Xbox One, Samsung Smart TV and Apple TV.

I think will start hearing about a new Youview box when Freesat finally release their third generation box which is meant to have support for 4K and HDR. It will be interesting to see the complete specs when it's finally released

    https://www.freesat.co.uk/news/freesat-selects-arris-partner-launch-generation-3-set-top-box/

both Freeview and Youview will then need to be able to compete with Freesat , so I believe we will see new boxes for both Freeview play and Youview. On the Youview side of things the new box might even become available to retail uses.

@stereohaven Unfortunately I missed the match as I was out of the country. I know during testing the Apple TV was looking a bit poor and not ramping up to the proper quality. Are the complaints about the picture on Apple TV devices or all (of course things will still leave a lot of room for improvement at this early stage).

I watched it in HDR very briefly on my iPhone X and it looked fine, but with the best will in the world you are not going to appreciate it at its best on a small screen.

What was confusing and annoying was the way in which they organised the streams, they had two completely separate sets of coverage, we only figured this out after abandoning YouTube because it was so poor and switching to the BT Sport app on my iPhone. Both streams were cast to Chromecast so the HDR element then became moot. It was only once the game had finished that we realised we needed to switch to "normal" BT Sport coverage if we wanted to see all the post-match studio discussion etc. which we achieved by using the app on my son's iPad. You just want to settle down and enjoy the experience don't you, not faff about with all the different options?

Unsure to be honest what devices others were using, it isn’t clear.

A user on the BT Community forum has stated BT were using HDR10. That would be strange, as BT, the BBC and NHK were all involved in live HLG trials.

in an article I read recently the author said

if you are interested then if you register then the article is at

It also describes the 3 different streams that BT used for the final.

HDR10 as has already been said today. Like you say, after having tested HLG for live tv, and getting such positive feedback, it was a surprise to learn they had switched to HDR10. Maybe last night was a new test for the alternative format  ;)
