Jump to Time in (Long) recordings ....

NewfyNewfy Member Posts: 55
So here we are starting the MotorSport Season & long Recordings - 4+ hours in many cases ....

The first Races of WSbK are now recorded and again the angst in having to (so called) fast Forward instead of a simple jumpt to the required point in the recording ... sigh

Can the Developers not give us a clue as to when this much missed feature from the original YV version will be implemented ?

Would be appreciated !

Thank you in anticipation - The Newfster ...

As a general rule of thumb if you ask on these Forums for a change or feature to be implemented that has already been asked multiple times before you'll be extremely lucky to get an official response. I don't think I've ever seen any kind of change to any firmware being officially pre-announced other than in the case of some reproducible bug and the promise it will be fixed soon.

My opinion - and I stress opinion - is that any major changes or additions to the various firmwares are not going to be implemented now or in the neare future due to the developers of this software either lacking the programming ability, budget or sufficient time to do so. The last three firmware updates to my box have all been mainly comsetic in nature, simple changes to the GUI or the moving around of existing data that any trainee coder could handle on his day off. Anything major, like adding a "Jump To" or a manual timer recording option, changes to the core functions or any of the dozens of other open requests currently listed in the 'Consolidated list of improvements and feature requests' Thread are unlikely to be addressed no matter what. Some of these requests, such as your Jump To, have been flagged for months, if not years, and nothing has been done in all that time so expecting something to be done about them as a matter of priority  requires quite a Leap of Faith.

I now have to put my hand on my heart and say, aside from some long-term exisiting bugs with the firmware, I'm fairly happy with the the way my box functions. But I would be even happier if it did some of the things that it used to do but which have been dropped along the way. I'm afraid you'll just have to accept that things are the way they are and what you want isn't important or cross your fingers and hope that the next firmware update will be a veritable cornucopia of helpful changes, new features and enhanced functionality. I'll let you decide which it's going to be based on the response you got to your question here.

It is getting worse. The WRC now runs all day on a BT Extra channel. So I have a 12 hour recording, I watched all the morning and lunch stages live so when I came to watch the last few stages on the recording I had to ff 10 hours which took about 20 minutes. I have made my feelings about this known and been told they are aware and agree and are pushing for it to be reinstated (of course there are many layers in BT each with their own agendas so I won’t be holding my breath).

Have to agree with the biz mister. It's really hard not to feel youview is being left to wither and die and slowly faid into obsolescence. This also is a personal opinion.

Nothing in your crystal ball then, Visionman?

But YouView really ought to hop to it, and get this done.

There was a tiny hint in the twitterverse yesterday that this may be something that YouView are currently thinking about.  ;)

Just to let people on this thread know - jumping around in recordings is a new feature in today's release:

Who knows if it will even arrive on BT boxes.

I think that's pretty much guaranteed.
The only reason why BT (or TalkTalk) would not wish to adopt it would be be if this feature had some kind of impact on their income from the users, and I can't think of any way that this would happen.

I wouldn't worry about it. But theres already been one comment on here that this isn't that good. We've only been waiting for it since NextGen launched. Theres just no pleasing some people.

Point of note - The user announcement about this new feature on the BT forum at the time of this post has received zero replies. Which was 07/08/19.

Maybe not so big a priority for BT users? I think most BT subscribers would be prioritising the launch of NowTV over anything else looking at the posts on thst particular topic.
Having saw the new Jump to Time on a friend's box I'm surprised they didn't go with what they had before where you simply typed in the timepoint you wished to reach. This new method is rather less user friendly.

Certainly not an implementation that gets me excited.
The OldGen version was spot on so if I'm recording a football game & I know there's 29mins of pre-game waffle I just jump 29mins. SIMPLES as they say.
And ofcourse most users will never know about this feature as documentation will never be updated and only those on the various Youview related forums will have a clue about it.

My issue with this is that you still have to have multiple presses to get where you wish to be in the recording. Yes, you can get closer, within 5% of any time, but then you still have to use minute skip forward to get to the actual point. In long recordings such as the Grand Prix the 10% skip become much further "spaced" than is short recordings.
Why they have not implemented the selection of minutes within a recording I don't know, especially as it is known it can be done and has been done very recently, in the new gen, but can't say more due to NDA.
Let's hope it's developed further as it is the one real missing feature from the Old Gen that I miss most.

Definitely very poorly thought out implementation of something that was done as it should be not so long ago (I saw it on a trialist's box) and of course was perfectly implemented in Old Gen. I'm surprised that any trialist would have given this positive feedback unless they'd never been around in the Old Gen days and therefore had nothing to compare it against. Either that or they were ignored and this was pushed out regardless. Very strange indeed.

It most definitely isn't. They've tried minute by minute already but it couldn't launch. But for NDA reasons I can't go into it. I'm just pleased that after all this time its finally arrived and here. Though zero replies on the BT forum comes, to me anyway, as quite a surprise.
Its been a feature long asked for.  :)

The beauty of this forum above some others I've frequented, we can agree to disagree without any arguments etc, and debate on the positives and negatives of this and other developments  :)
PS. I'm aware of the reasoning behind dropping the original plans. It's just that for those who made use of the Old Gen implementation of typing in an actual time this appears more clunky and less user friendly. I'm still amazed that this passed testing and was deemed a suitable replacement for the real 'jump to time' from old Gen.

Oh for sure, it is a good forum. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one as I'm just glad its here. As I'm sure are others. 4hr Moto GP watchers of particular note.  :*

I've been building complex computer systems for over 30 years, so what really is so hard about what should fundamentally be a quite simple change?
What we've now got , or might eventually get on BT units , is better than nothing - just - but quite hit-and-miss and not overly user friendly.
  • VisionmanVisionman Member, Super User Posts: 10,303 ✭✭✭
I have to be honest and say I'm surprised to see such negativity about the launch of a feature thats been asked for for years. And from BT users no less. But no, I'm sorry but there aren't too many likes for a feature thats a major step forward from a small team that worked their proverbial's off to get it here and launch. Thats my positive take on it anyway. It can't be that hard can it?

The negativity is clearly because it's nowhere near as user friendly as the Old Gen version. It's not what people have been asking for since Next Gen arrived. The people testing these things are bound to have voiced their concerns, how could they not when they saw what was on offer, and were either ignored OR the testers somehow believed this was a good implementation of what was once a useful function.

Stating complete your complete speculation as fact is a dangerous game my friend. You forgot to state the term 'in my opinion'.
