Hi all,

Starting today YouView will be phasing out support for the YouView mobile app with final support ending on the 31st March 2020. The YouView mobile app will then be removed from the App Store and Google Play.

The BT TV app is available to all BT TV subscribers. It can be used to connect to your set top box to set recordings remotely.

More information regarding this change can be found on our Support Site here: https://support.youview.com/mobile-app/

Thanks,
Sarah

    That's a bit of a blow!

You don't mention TalkTalk TV, or their TV Planner app, will that continue to work?
  • DanielDaniel Member, Super User Posts: 1,979 ✭✭✭
What's happening for retail customers?? You may mention Humax but they don't have a app. Has BTS app been blocked for retail customer use to set recordings. I think this is a step in the wrong direction personally. The app was one of the best features about having a youview box.

Hey @Daniel, I think your question is answered on the Support Site, in wonderful corp speak:

"...we are refocusing development away from ‘direct to consumer’ products..."
  • JoeJoe Member, Super User Posts: 2,066 ✭✭✭
    That’s bad news. Very disappointing.
As a retail user will we be able to use the BTtv app and still have remote record functionality?
  • redchizredchiz Member, Super User Posts: 5,471 ✭✭✭
@Joe I just tried, you need a BT ID in order to access the app.

So retail purchasers can’t remote record 😡  afaik!

    I can't wait until @Roy picks up on this!   :o  :D

That has jogged my memory about the funding situation. Not seen anything about that so assuming only BT is picking up the majority of the tab and therefore wants all the focus on what it needs going forwards.

Just tried the talktalk TV planner app and that seems to still work with retail

That's good to hear. I would still like to know if it will continue long-term as the only noticeable difference from the YouView app is the logo.

    Hi @redchiz @Daniel
We would recommend reaching out to TalkTalk regarding their TalkTalk Planner App. Contact details can be found here
    Thanks,
    Sarah

Sorry @Sarah, why? That sounds a bit sinister if you will forgive me for saying, TalkTalk are still partners in YouView are they not? Why can you speak on behalf of BT, but not them?

Now wish, I had not got my newest YouView box, just over a year ago! I can see it, now going in the bin! Since I use this app, most days! Very, very bad move!
  • gsvalentinegsvalentine Member Posts: 163 ✭✭
My guess is the next number of days, YouView will say that BT now fully own it and support will stop supporting of all retail customers.
  • That's the end of youview in my household - appalling.  Won't be using it again in any guise.

@Sarah Am I right in thinking that Humax will be responsible for any future mobile app for retail boxes?
  • JoeJoe Member, Super User Posts: 2,066 ✭✭✭
@redchiz thanks for checking that out. Were you using a retail bought box to get the TalkTalk app to work?

    Not great news.

    Why is this happening?

At YouView our mission is to combine cutting edge technology with Live TV and On Demand television to deliver a brilliantly smart TV experience for our customers.

In order to deliver the most innovative TV experience, we are refocusing development away from ‘direct to consumer’ products and toward delivering best in class TV technology services direct to our customers BT, TalkTalk, Humax and Sony.

This is the first day YouView have officially announced they have become BTs subscription baby. The thin end of the wadge wedge. The next 'cutting edge development' will be the announcement of cessation (ending) of the sale of retail boxes. Its an absolute disgrace and a sad day. But BT don't care about that. Not happy but expected.

I'm now happy with the disagree icon, because its gone.

The TalkTalk app works with my DTR2000, it also worked for Daniel who is not as far as I know a TalkTalk customer.

The TalkTalk app looks and behaves exactly the same as the YouView one hence why I wonder/worry about its future.

Disgraceful decision! I have a T2100, but no subscription.  At least please let me use the BT App to set remote recordings without being a BT customer.  Or is that something that will be possible?  Remote Recording capability was a main reason for buying the Humax to be honest.

As far as I can see that is not possible. But you can use the TalkTalk TV Planner app, pending any further announcements.

Thanks, but I get the exact same message as the YouView App unfortunately.  I was initially quite excited when I tried the TalkTalk App (I'm not a customer of theirs either) as it did work and found my box, but looks like it's the same death warrant.

WEF 31 March you will have to be a BT subscriber to use the app. No announcement has been made about TalkTalks, which probably means you will still be able to use it, as if a material change was made, it would have to be announced.

Well, I would like to know how many consumers that purchased their Youview pvrs "in good faith", yes "good faith" from a shop with a retail box with "pictures" all over the box promoting the 7 day backwards/forwards feature that has become a classic design, plus the brilliant Youview App that has helped to sell the product, enabling you to use via your Tablet/Smartphone will be returning their purchases under the 6 year "Sales of Goods act". I have looked around retailers myself, comparing both Youview & Freeview Play from Panasonic & also Humax with their 4000/5000 models. You don't often see the products on demo, so you have to rely on either reviews, adverts or the content displayed on the retail box on shop display. It's a confusing market, maybe this is intended? Glad I still have my old equipment (while it works!!).

It just seems a very bad move. Doesn't really appear at the moment any loyalty shown to consumers at the same time. I wondered why we recently received the "Discover" long delayed update. The App had most of the function on this carried over to the pvr. I still can't understand the logic. Youview might be a forward thinking company, but you also need to look behind you & remember the loyal consumers, not just the subscribers to the ISP's. Would anyone else agree?

Can't wait for the day when Youview get rid of the dreaded darkened banner when using fast forward/rewind recordings.

The official statement doesn’t really explain anything to your average customer outside of the industry. What does that mean even?

Are we Youview retail customers being shown the door? Should I be optimistic that they mentioned Humax, and Sony, or is this the writing on the wall for Youview retail?

We could do with a straight forward explanation from Youview. Is retail Youview being phased out?

Good luck with that. Try it and you will unfortunately get nowhere. Many have tried, all have failed. I've helped a few of them, whist telling them its pointless, but they pursued the matter anyway.

Yes, Andy, before I forget, welcome to the Youview forum.
The Panasonic has one, not sure how reliable, but they do have one for their pvr. Freeview have an Freeview App, to be honest I don't know that much about it. Not sure if Humax have any plans to make one for their Freeview pvrs. I have only used the Youview one & it works well most of the time. Just needs a bit more developing to iron out a few minor bugs. I am just stunned at the announcement today. There is no real logic (well money maybe) but this is not forward thinking, you also have to not only plan ahead, but also look behind you at same time.
