Hi,
How can I disable Youview on a Sony XG95 running Android 9?
I want my hard drive functionality back, if it's not possible I'll be returning the TV.
Thanks,
JDM

    Hi

you need to do a factory reset and reinitialise the TV picking the FreeView option instead.

There is a less drastic way:-

Press the [Home] button on the Sony TV remote control and:
        Go to 'Settings'
        Go to 'Channel Setup'
        Go to 'YouView Setup'
        Select 'Disable YouView'
        Select 'Yes' to confirm

It clearly states in the printed & built in manual that it has the ability to record to a hard drive, like my previous Sony. The difference is Youview blocks it on what appears to be a copyright issue. However, it is still capable of receiving Freeview which should work, it has it the menu to record, but can't see the hard drive even though it's recognised & formatted to the TV.
And yes, the shop has agreed to take it back, so no problem..
    Stay safe..

Can you imagine buying a Sony youview tv then attempting to return it as you dont actually like the youview experience

    Good look with that.

    @kodikid

Have you any actual experience of YouView on a Sony TV?

There are two separate issues here.

    (i) Recording is not supported on the YouView side of these sets.

(ii) Recording is, in principle, supported on the Freeview side of these sets. However, there can be issues with the type of drive used, the size of it, how it is formatted, whether the Sony TV is in a good mood or not, and so on.

You now have the problem of choosing all over again; LG with their OLED, Panasonic with the standout set at the moment, or Samsung with its QLED, which isn’t OLED, but with its One Connect box, the widest choice of smart apps, and its all round ease of use?

Sony draws you in with its unrivalled PQ; but everything else about its sets, as you have seen, blows chunks.

     Yes

Proud owner of 2 allegedly "smart" televisions.

Both Sony ,one youview one freeview play.

That's why to me the tuners on the set are completely irreverent as both sets are connected to T4000 and Roku  boxes respectively.

Use the 4000 for its PVR and scroll back with the Roku as a standby for the app's youview can't supply.

No allegedly smart tv can compare to this set up in my humble opinion

To add, youview on the Sony is vastly inferior to the T4000 and that is speaking from experience.

I hadn’t spotted this before but can confirm it works. Just done it on my AF8. I think earlier builds of Android didn’t support this feature hence my earlier comment.

I have always thought that the ideal use for a Sony TV is as a monitor screen for (e.g.) Sky users, and all the Sony/Android/YouView gubbins is best ignored.

And using the TVs as monitors seems to be what you are doing, though I am sorry if the tuners aren’t showing you the proper respect 😛

So you have been able to experience YouView on these Sony TVs... in which case, I’m slightly surprised that you are surprised at the number of people who want to turn it off because they find it unbearably slow/just don’t like it/ can’t use satellite with it/didn’t realise it couldn’t record/ and so on.

To say nothing of the people who bitterly regret buying one of these TVs because of Android clunkiness and idiosyncrasy/wifi unreliability/general unreliability/app unavailability/ and so on.

On the Sony site, for any one of these TVs, try and find where it says YouView can’t record; it does, but the Vogon plans for a hyperspace bypass are easier to find than this smallest of small print.

Do you run your Android set in Freeview mode, though? A small but important difference, even for those not using the tuners, is that YouView locks the Sony into coming on in TV mode, while on the Freeview side, the setting can be toggled to whatever other input you find most convenient.

This may be something that CEC handles for you anyway; but it is still worth knowing, if you didn’t already.

and scroll down a bit, as this posting was originally designed to overcome some NotSatisfactory limitations.

Although this was later updated, item 12 was there from day 1, 04/11/2015

And it makes it possible for you to do this:-

as the channels are preserved when you switch to the Freeview side, where you can reorder them. And if you go back into the YouView side, and skip the retune, the reordering is preserved, in YouView!

    Hi Folks,

I finally managed to get a fix, & it went like this:
It seemed there used to be a setting for Channel Setup in which you could disable Youview & revert to Freeview which isn't limited from recording, but this had mysteriously vanished on my 2019 XG95. I called Sony support & after a lengthy discussion going through all the settings they asked if my TV was running the latest software. I replied yes, as I always check my devices & this set was telling me it was indeed running the latest software by connecting to the internet. However, this doesn't actually seem to have been the case as Sony support sent me an even newer copy in an email link. Once I had loaded this manually via USB stick the TV was not only upgraded to a later version of Android 9, but the ability to go to the Channel Setup reappeared & from there you can now enable/disable Youview. Once disabled, the TV reverts to Freeview & recording is possible once again. And if you want Youview again, just go back into the settings to enable it & remember to ignore the need for re-tuning the channels as it's not necessary.

I just need to see if the timer works again now, as this time it allows a timer event to be set because it recognises the hard drive. On the rare occasion I got Freeview to load before, it didn't recognise the hard drive even though it was formatted & recognised under the storage settings.

I hope this maybe helpful to someone else.

    Cheers & stay safe,

    Jon
