Disney and Sky

From September the only place to watch Disney content will be through it's +app.
All Disney channels are being removed from Sky Virgin and BT.
Huge coup for Sky as they have exclusive rights to the Disney + app.
The cynic in me thinks this was the original intention from the start  making any attempt for Virgin and BT to gain access to the app  now even more unlikely.

    I could, as you suggest, just ignore this because I disagree, but then other people might think it is true.

    But I wonder what definition of ‘exclusive’ you are using here? You can only get the app on a Sky box? Or maybe on a NowTV Stick, at a pinch, because they are still Sky?

    So nothing on the Amazon Firestick, Roku, no Apple devices, certainly nothing for generic Android? And perish the thought the app might be on any Smart TV?

    Given BT’s predilection for the ‘reverse cuckoo’ effect, where they took the egg of YouView, and now of NowTV, into their nest and pretend they laid it, I can see why Disney might fight shy of that. But what would BT put it on anyway? The ‘BT TV’, aka YouView, box which is so far behind the curve it still thinks it is on a straight road?
    So, look at it from Disney’s point of view. They want to be ubiquitous, like Netflix, and platform neutral, again like Netflix. Not having Netflix on your device doesn’t mean that Netflix is not credible, it means your device is not credible. 
    And likewise Disney+. Like Netflix, Disney are a 300-pound gorilla that can sit pretty much anywhere they please. 
    The more devices they are on, the better for them. So they need an exclusive deal with Sky, or indeed anybody, like a fish needs a bicycle.

    Slightly condescending that the great Raymondo couldn't pass on this for fear of the great unwashed being mislead.
    But then being egotistical can be a burden.

    Yo be honest it’s the sort of thing I would expect from Sky. Be interesting to see exact wording though (if it exists). I suspect they’ve said exclusive and mean it in the sense that they’re the only Pay TV platform in the UK to have it as a native App.

    the word ‘exclusive’ appears once, in “In a statement Disney said: “From 1 October, Disney+ will become the exclusive home for content from Disney Channel....”

    This does not support any assertions that Sky claimed any exclusivity in this area. 

    Though you can certainly hear the sound of nails being driven into a coffin throughout the article, as it neatly summarises the true situation here.

    The real problem here is the loss of History, Nat Geo and Discovery from all the platforms. Sky has created their own equivalent channels. Not sure what Virgin is doing but it’s clear with the NowTV Deal BT will at some point in the not too distant future remove channels like W and Alibi as examples from their platform and be left with BT Sport and AMC as the only real selling points for their platform. Given the increased monthly fees that come with that and Sky’s deals for new subscribers the BTTV platform is starting to
    lose its attraction. Overall this could be bad news for YouView in the long term.

    Correction from me - I've just read Sky's press release on Disney+ and neither they nor Disney mention the word 'exclusive' -

    "Sky and Disney today announced a new multi-year deal, making Disney+ available for purchase in the UK and Ireland on Sky Q, to be followed by NOW TV in the coming months. Customers will be able to watch great new shows like The Mandalorian and High School Musical; The Musical, The Series; The World According to Jeff Goldblum and more.

    As the deal includes the first-pay window for 20th Century titles, Sky Cinema customers will continue to enjoy access to the latest blockbusters, like Le Mans ’66 and Terminator: Dark Fate.

    Jeremy Darroch, Group Chief Executive, Sky, said: “We’ve built a strong partnership with Disney over three decades and we’re pleased that our customers in the UK and Ireland can continue to enjoy their world-class content – all in one place on Sky Q. This is a great start to what is set to be another stellar year for Sky – in 2020 we’ll launch new channels and genres, start building Sky Studios Elstree and we’ve got brilliant new and returning originals coming too.”

    I have AMC and the HD version but I don't watch AMC that much. 
    I did at first miss not having W, Alibi and Eurosport but have got used not to having the channels.

    I have AMC and the HD version but I don't watch AMC that much. 
    I did at first miss not having W, Alibi and Eurosport but have got used not to having the channels.

    Losing Eurosport is the one thing that  puts me off spending the extra to move over. I watch Snooker and Tennis a lot so losing Eurosport is a big deal.

    The fact remains that if you subscribe to Talk Talk BT or Virgin then come September you will lose Disney content and all those affiliated with it (Marvel studios Nat Geo star wars etc). 
    Personally at a loss as why would anyone use these companies when a good PVR and a Roku stick are cheaper and offer superior content.

     Because when packaged, there cheap and to keep you often/always throw discounts at you for fun.

    Come September, any such subscribers, and Sky subscribers as well, will need the Disney+ app, and a subscription, to get the Disney content.

    Sky users will find the app on their boxes; I’m sure everybody else will find it somewhere handy, if they want it.

    But the interesting question is whether these suppliers will trim their prices to reflect the lost content and/or the cost of a Disney+ subscription to restore this.

    Sky will lose all 3 Disney channels. Come September Disney + will be the only outlet for Disney content in Europe.

    Yes Sky as well as BT and Virgin will lose the Disney Channel and other Disney content.
    In time will this also affect contend from ABC Studios that is shown on Now TV/Sky as well as Amazon Prime and Netflix. As I seem to watch a lot of shows that are made by ABC or was made for ABC.

    Much in the same way as third-party providers will lose original content from BBC/ITV etc. as licences expire and it moves to BritBox.

    So an even more outstranding spin from Sky, when what they should have been saying was: "Hey, great news! You know all that stuff from Disney you now get included with the Kids and  Cinema bundles? Well it's all going to be removed. But you will still be able to see it by paying an additional monthly fee directly to Disney+, which will be available on your Sky Q box along with many other devices. And we won't be reducing the price of your subscription to compensate. How good is that?"
