Could YouView via Satellite compete with FreeSat

As per title,
Could YouView via Satellite compete with FreeSat.

basically we have FreeView and FreeSat 

YouView piggyback FreeView and essentially rival them by using their own epg and software to deliver a better/different experience for the customer.

could YouView do the same thing v’s FreeSat?

    YouView can’t even make a go of their retail terrestrial boxes any more, so they are hardly likely to branch out into competing with FreeSat 😢

    Bit harsh, 
     youview given the appropriate support and marketing would dominate the retail pvr market. 

    Problem is it's been hijacked as a subscription service to compete with the likes of Sky and Virgin media. 

    Such a shame as the current crop of pvr's are far inferior to what youview offered.

    They did. Have you got the figures? And that’s what they set out to do in 2012. What do you think they did wrong? Just that YouView has a very large slice of a very small pie.

    Seems that earlier, just about everybody had a VCR, so it looked like there was a big market there for something that made better quality recordings, more conveniently. But Betamax was the warning; it wasn’t about quality, and it wasn’t even about active use. Ever see a VCR that wasn’t flashing 12:00? It was mostly about media consumption; and that moved to DVD players, with remarkably few people missing the ability to record.

    Yes, that was the second body blow. Why buy a box that can only offer the standard Freeview channels, when you can be ‘given’ one that comes with so many more from BT? And even with TalkTalk, where the take up of Boosts was quite sparse, be ‘given’ one rather than having to fund a one-time purchase some way north of £200?

    But YouView wasn’t hijacked. Fair fight between the various ways it was offered, and look what lost.

    Such a shame as the current crop of pvrs are far inferior to what youview offered. 

    PVRs are no longer where the bulk of the market is. Streaming is carrying the day. And even though YouView provides a complement of apps, so does a Roku Stick at a quarter of the price, and a NowTV Stick at even less. And often for better versions.

    And how far are Freeview Play and other PVRs behind YouView now anyway, given that they all sport what was once YouView’s USP?

    The iPhone and the iPad never lost their primacy; even though Android devices have come on, their makers know that the Apple products are the ones to beat, or be cheaper than, or be more flexible than, if they want to sell any. 

    YouView should have been the Apple of PVRs; it started that way, but just never held on to its lead. Now it’s the apple of hardly anyone’s eye.

    Because FreeSat & YouView are both free options in the market which is separated by aerial & satellite and to corner both markets with 1 interface would be fantastic a box that could give you the best of both. Hardware lets in the info, Software does the work and the consumer gets a product that joins them together seamlessly with on demand and apps etc 
    1 box that works wherever you are & even better if you have both available. YouView wouldn’t need FreeView play nor FreeSat’s Freetime.

    You are making the mistake of looking at this from the perspective of someone who would like such a box, instead of at the economics of someone, like YouView, contemplating building such a box in the hope of making a commercial profit.

    Which, as we have seen, YouView could not do in the retail OTA sector.

    So they would have to say - what if we added Freesat? How many more customers would we attract, and would it be worth the additional development and ongoing costs, or would we just wind up, far from cornering the market, with a box whose necessary additional cost would actually shrink, rather than increase, the pool of prospective customers?

    Food for thought....
