Channel editing unavailable on Sony TV

Tomnoid2Tomnoid2 Member Posts: 2
The yellow button edit option is not available on my new Sony TV - can it be enabled? I'm running Live TV & Catch Up Version 2020-06-04-39cdfb2a2c which seems to be the latest. Thanks

    @Tomnoid2

Disable the YouView interface for the moment, and go over to the Freeview one.

The Edit button should work there.

Then go back to the YouView interface, ignoring the retune option.

This will give you your edited channels list on the YouView side.

Or you might want to stay on the Freeview side; it depends how much you value the YouView backwards EPG, Search, etc., compared with the possibility of recording, or of using the satellite channels if you have a dish (though note it isn’t Freesat), which, like Edit Channels, are only available on the Freeview side.

It used to be that you lost the itv hub and All4 catchup services if you switched to the Freeview side, but for 2020 Sony Android TVs, I believe this is no longer the case. However, best you check this.

@Roy, the 2020 TVs (or any Sony where you see a "Live TV & Catch Up" app) are very different to the 2015 era. Recommend you have a play with one if you get an opportunity.

You'll find that disabling the YouView interface isn't an option in the same way it was and avoiding the re-tune isn't the work-around it used to be. You can dig into the settings/apps menu and disable the app, but that's not something you'll want to do and probably won't help.

I think what's missing is the actual yellow button here as you'd expect on a which would be an omission that YouView would need to fix. Options within the Sony menu system are obviously up to Sony.

    Thanks @onceuponatime

I don’t think John Lewis would like me fiddling about to that extent 😛

I know the mechanism for disabling YouView has changed; but I guess it’s still there, or anyone who wanted to record/to watch satellite/to banish YouView from their sight/ wouldn’t be able to?

And can I presume that the yellow Edit button works on the Freeview side?

So it’s presumably trying to return from the Freeview side to the YouView side where my method that works on 2015 sets falls to the ground; what now happens to thwart this?

It looks like more of an 'appy' co-existence. You can have your choice of Sony or YouView TV app without disabling the other. Just launch the app you want to watch TV with as you might launch Chrome or Firefox to access your favourite website.
As I linked to, the yellow button specifically is a YouView UI convenience on the boxes, I'm not sure there's a Sony equivalent.

This is precisely why YouView via Satellite should be a thing.
Essentially it’s all software as the over the air signals are their for FreeView & the satellite signals are there for Satellite/FreeSat.

youview software could easily be adapted to take in the satellite information and they could have a clever interface to harmonise both free services.
YouView could kill FreeSat dead and take all the business could easily add   FreeView tuner to a satellite box or vice versa with a YouView box for a tiny price.
Make it compatible with all the Lnb’s and run a sky style FreeSat system with app addons and mini boxes

essentially the old sky ownership model with Q like functionality for 2020

A rather tenuous peg for you to hang your favourite hobby horse on yet again, don’t you think?

I am patiently waiting, somewhat in vain it seems, for any refutation of my comments on your last excursion on this topic:-

It has been said that the internet is a write-only medium. Please do not let this be true in your case.

    Thanks Roy,
On my KD43XH8196BU (2020) I can confirm that YouView can now be disabled via : Home -> Settings -> Apps -> LiveTV & CatchUp -> Disable
You can however directly launch the Sony EPG from the Home screen via the "TV" app. Unfortunately the Sony EPG doesn't support channel editing (it seems..) so I'm stumped.
I can't imagine why the yellow YouView button has been removed - hopefully it gets re-added in a subsequent update..

Thanks for that. One good turn deserves another:-
The “Sony Channel Editor” tool allows you to re-order your channel list via your PC. This user-friendly tool is easy to use. Simply follow this 3-step process:
    1. Download the list from your TV onto a USB stick
    2. Edit the channel list order on your computer
    3. Upload it back to your TV

  • The ‘Sony Channel Editor’ does not solve the problem with my Sony KD-48 A9. Uploading the edited list appears to work - the TV restarts after the upload - but it makes no difference to the channels displayed in the YouView guide.
I have yet to try disabling YouView and then uploading the edited XML file but even if that does work, it’s a lot of messing around. Why can’t Sony and YouView work together to put back the yellow button edit option?
