From today Amazon will be available on Sky q and NOW TV And NOW TV will be available through the fire stick To Have greater freedom of entertainment more entertainment On the Sky Q box And NOW TV App Means more competition For BT Also they're in talks with ITV and BBC about britbox It looks like sky QS got near enough all the apps going To pity that BT hasn't got the Disney Channel app

    Don't think Sky consider BT as a serious contender given that BT tv's main offering ls Now tv.

    I know BT is a threat But Sky is getting more apps than anyone else Like Netflix Disney Plus And now prime video And on the way soon is britbox I'm saying that Sky A Threats

    This is great if you already subscribe to Sky but I doubt if it will encourage cord cutters to sign up.

    Amazon is already available far and wide so this development won't have any significant market impact.
    I'm now happy with the disagree icon, because its gone.

    If Sky get BritBox UK & Apple TV they will undoubtedly be the “one box” solution. 
    YouView can compete if they do the same. Free TV, Pay TV (Now TV/BT Sport) & SVOD services (Netflix, Amazon, Disney+, Apple TV+ BritBox UK..etc.)

    Actually, it’s all over a fight for those precious HDMI ports on your TV. 

    After ARC, you have three left; one for the UHD/BluRay/DVD, one for your PVR, maybe, and so just one left for a Stick, to bring you the services you can’t get, or at least can’t get satisfactorily, on the rest of your kit.

    And NowTV and Amazon were losing out to Roku, the only people with both NowTV and Amazon on their Stick.

    With this move, both are back in the running. And the winner signs you up as an account, even if you don’t subscribe, at first, to their service. But there will be blandishments, and eventually....

    Getting you as a subscriber gives them their ROI on the Stick back in spades, and that’s the real goal. 

    But even if they don’t, they have sold you the Stick, and not one of their competitors.

    Now it's a level playing field with each having equal content the main criteria when buying a streaming device will be price.

    Amazon have definitely came out winners in this deal as with their massive buying power they will practically give firesticks away in an attempt for market dominance.

    In 2020 I really wouldn't put a dvd player as a serious contender for a coveted HDMI slot.

    I still use my Blu-Ray/DVD player but may be not as much as say a few years ago.
    I agree that some TVs only have 3 HDMI ports and those can now be quickly used up with all the HDMI devices that we now have.
    It's good to have everything in one place.
    Hope in time Youview will add more apps to its service.
    Disney + seems to be the only other app I would hope comes to Youview overtime.
    Watching TV over time could turn out to be costly if you had to get every payed streaming service out there just so you can get all the programmes and shows that you want.

    Re your PS, of course you wouldn’t, because you’re a really hoopy frood. 

    But you would be amazed what people ask on forums, e.g. when they find their brand new £2,000 65” UHD TV doesn’t seem to have an input for the SCART on their cruddy old DVD player, and they grudgingly accept my recommendation of the 33 quid Sony one from Argos with HDMI, instead of the UHD player that would really show their TV off.

    And I bet when they get into Argos they see the £18 Bush one, and think “Well, that’s got HDMI” and buy that instead.... 😢

    I gave Prime a go last night on my Now TV devices and they kept losing connection during the live football.
    Switched to my 372T box and connection rock solid, albeit around 20 seconds behind the Now box.
    I tried the Now box again later, with YouView disconnected and Prime still disconnected.

     Thats not an <ahem> prime example of using Prime as there are an awful lot of users having an awful lot of problems with Amazons live football on various devices. For me, on a Sony 4K TV (internal Amazon app), which can only display a PQ at 25fps, the connection is solid via powerlines but the resolution looks ****. I'm going to see what it looks like on a laptop tonight as the picture is doing my head in and Amazon have got wall-to-wall football over the Christmas period which I'll want to watch.
    I'm now happy with the disagree icon, because its gone.

    I have everything on my latest LG Smart TV, save for BT Sport which is the only thing I now turn to on my Roku. I no longer use any of the apps on my YouView retail box I am sorry to say. Things have changed very much for the better since we were first discussing this many years back. I would as soon cut off an important part of my body as subscribe to Sky Q. Even if money was no object.

    @redchiz I agree as Since my sister got her 55inch Samsung 2019 4k smart TV 15 months ago she also no longer uses the apps on her Youview retail box and now only uses the retail Youview box if she wants to record something. Other than that she now mostly uses the TV tuner on her Samsung TV. 
    Only app shes got missing from her Samsung TV is the CBS Catch Up/Horror Bites but thats not to big a deal for her as shes got all the other main apps.

    A little more perhaps; we watched the last episode of His Dark Materials; The Subtle Knife, in UHD on the BBC iPlayer on our T4000, seemingly the only device we have connected to our 2015 Samsung UHD TV that will allow this, as the native player on the TV will not support it.

    @RoyB the UHD version is available on my Samsung  BBC iPlayer so I assume it is the age/specification of the 2015 Tv that is the limitation.

    The iplayer app on the 2018 LG can handle that OK.

    Just invest in a fire stick or roku,  all the apps are there including YouTube and Disney, but don't bother watching wander vision..its dire.

    Yes I have. Got fed up with waiting for Youview to broker a deal with Amazon.

     Fire stick is really good. GUI has a smooth satisfying interface, and features I’ve been looking for like auto frame rate changing for films and such, plus all the apps you mentioned. Down side is the auto frame rate feature only covers Amazon and Plex at the moment, Netflix is yet to implement it on fire stick....so there’s a couple of  gaps which Youview could plug if they can seize the initiative :)

    Just last night I ordered an Amazon Fire Stick. Never went for the 4k one as don't have 4k TVs and it will be another few years before I think about replacing one of the TVs
    Will still use both Youview boxes as PVRs and at time still use the apps that's on the box.
    I manly decided to get the Amazon Fire Stick as both my Samsung TVs from 2013 and 2014 dont support the last apps and some apps like Youtube now seem slow in loading and to use on the TVs.
    You would have though Amazon video would have went on Youview retail boxes by now.

    Yeah it’s perplexing that they haven’t brokered an agreement to get Amazon onto retail Youview. I guess by the excessive long time that’s gone by now it won’t be happening :(

    After all these years I have still never quite understood how the vagaries of YouView allow certain apps on certain boxes, but not on others. I am resigned to the idea of few, if any, further advances, especially in respect of "retail" boxes which effectively no longer exist.  😢

    Yeah originally I thought that all Youview devices would benefit from a stronger unified platform and attract all the mainstream apps but sadly that’s not the case with Amazon.

    That assessment is unfortunately correct. Retail is dead.  :'(
