4K will only be internet only as Digital UK is selling off terrestrial spectrum to telephone companies and earning billions from it. It's no big deal as the UK is now fibred up to the eyeballs and so can now easily cope with TV broadcasts.
    It really isn't.

    Seems like Visionman can
only see to the end of his own street if he thinks “ the UK is now fibred up to the eyeballs”.
I'm not sure whether a laugh or a grimace is the correct way to interpret that comment but it’s just totally incorrect!!!!

That's really informative @Mike70 thanks. But, without being patronising, the poor old dears who just want to watch their usual programmes on the telly are unlikely to be any the wiser.  😟

Then prove it isn't. Because it is. Well? Ofcom link? ISPpreview? Which? Show everyone it isn't.

20% FTTP coverage currently, max. As for the hybrid FTTC rubbish and live streaming check out BT, or NOW TV forums during any major sporting event and see what's going down. Now imagine that with EastEnders, or Corrie, or anything else the majority of people actually watch.

You need to explain to me what is not patronising about your comment @redchiz. :p

@jonesh @DJHB1980 - redchiz wasn't being patronising about OAPs. He was stating a fact. You turn on the telly and you just want to watch telly.

I don't understand your comment @Visionman . Why else would one turn the TV on, other than to watch it?
My comment was directed at @redchiz's use of the term poor old dears, which, if you need an explanation, is a Victorian term which in the 21st century is considered to about as patronising as it is possible to be.

Openreach staring getting ready to rollout FTTP in my area last year but then it got delayed.
Last I heard it was now meant to be this year FTTP would be in my area but have not heard anything else and no confirmed date has been given.
My area has had Virgin since 2019.
I have had FTTC with BT since it came to my area in 2011.
Not all of towns in the UK have full FTTC coverage.
I still got family friends from mums side that stay just under 4 miles from Falkirk that I still sometimes keep in touch with and only part of there area has FTTC and you have to be near Falkirk town centre to get Virgin.
Broadband has improved over the years but could still do with a little more improvement.

    Hi Darren.
All towns and citys now have FTTC. The UK is now fibired up to 98,1%. Virgin have nothing to do with it. They are an independent cable TV and internet operator owned by Liberty Global.

    @jonesh

Millions of owners turn the telly on to watch their YouView boxes.

So seamless is the service that many owners, possibly including the rich, young, and unpleasant, don’t even realise they aren’t watching the telly itself, and confuse the help forums by not mentioning the YouView box in the equation 😢

@jonesh - When you turn your telly on you do know your watching YouView, yeah?

Gonna be honest here, even if I could get FTTP, I'd still prefer to receive via a dish or an aerial. Relying on one connection for everything sounds like a recipe for disaster
From my experience with BT TV, I can't really recommend full a full IPTV based service, it's fine if your using the service on its own, but the moment you start a Steam or PSN download it all falls apart

"Gonna be honest here, even if I could get FTTP....."

Dream on mate... The UK is fibered up to the eye balls. FTTP? Why on earth would anyone want or need 1000Mbps?

You keep saying that @Visionman, it really isn't. My son was recently renting a flat in the centre of Liverpool and I kid you not the only decent broadband he could get was via a 4G modem, the alternative was ADSL only, no fibre in sight.

    @Visionman

Spot on! Our 500Mbps FTTP is more than adequate for my wife and myself.

Of course, there’s just the two of us, and we don’t game, and if we are watching a Player or a streaming app, it’s usually both of us together watching the same thing.

But the 500 holds up pretty good, and 1000 would be overkill.
    For the moment, anyway…..

I get about 66mb with BT FTTC and the now thats fine with me as its manly me thats using the internet and during the day if im in dad will sometimes watch the streaming app with me. Dad dont watch much TV at night as he used to and in the last few months has been registered as partly blind and uses hearing aid in one of his ears.
Used to get about 70mb but BT say the green cab that my FTTC comes from is almost full and thats why my speeds dropped a little. Dont know if thats true or not. I cant complain as still get an ok speed.
I do also have a few more things connected via wifi in the house than I used too say a year or two ago.
I love my tech and stuff and if FTTP started to restart its rollout in my area after being delayed last year. I would think about getting it depending on price per month.

Hi Chiz, sorry about your sons situation but have a read of this -
    https://www.electronicsweekly.com/news/business/law-will-bring-fibre-access-blocks-flats-2019-10/

Also, besides Openreach, there are independent companies that ONLY fibre up blocks of flats, so if he orders it it can be done.  :)

No he couldn't, not from any supplier, believe me we tried. I am quite happy with my FTTC service of 60 Meg and I suspect Roy was just taking the p***. The fact is that the UK is not yet "fibered up" in the way you suggest for a significant percentage of the population.

4% that can't get fibre, really? In inner cities? Source.
