BT youview box not switching on

I have a BT you view recorder that sometimes will not turn on or light up on the front panel when first turned on, however there is a light on the back at the ethernet socket
the box is a few years old now

I have a similar issue with a relatively old T2100 box. It doesn't always come out of smart sleep and power up in the morning. I'm talking about once every couple of months or so. If that's the same problem you have, then switching off Smart Standby Mode in the settings would probably resolve the issue... with the associated rise in annual power consumption of your box. I haven't bothered and put up with occasionally having to wake it up myself. HTH
  • thanks for your reply I turn the box off at the mains every night and turn it back on usually in the evening time so I don't think it would be the same issue

Perhaps not... or maybe - both problems are related to powering back on again and may both be related to intermittent failure to boot. You could leave it on... ;)

@patterson12a When the box does not start up as you mentioned in your first post, how do you resolve it? Turn it off and back on again? Most of us are increasingly conscious of energy usage these days, but the Smart mode is designed to be as efficient as possible both for the box itself and in terms of consumption. In fact regular switching devices on and off can use far greater bursts of electricity usage as well as stressing and thus shortening the life of the device.

Having said all that, try a maintenance mode reset as explained here, that may clear and clean the system and improve matters going forward.

  • thank you for the advice, think I will just leave plugged in and leave on stand by
  • hi I'm still experiencing problems with my youview recorder. i have tried to keep it on all the time, which worked well for about two weeks, however now the box will display a red circle but will not turn on which means i have to switch ir off at the back and then it will not turn back on. the only way to get it on again is by turn it off and on again up to 30 times and by taking all the wire out the back but no set pattern to get it going again.

Do you think, then, that now might be a good time for you to try the Maintenance Mode Option 2 that @redchiz kindly suggested above?

OK then, I think you are looking at hardware failure.

But there are two things you could try:-

    1. Check the power supply with a multimeter to ensure that it is providing the rated voltage (or try an equivalent power supply if you can get hold of one easily, borrow one from a friend with a YouView box maybe?)

    2. Do a Maintenance Mode Option 5, the most drastic reset there is, though it will wipe any recordings you have.

Though the issue sounds like something that 1 might fix, but 2 probably won’t as it doesn’t sound like the sort of thing Option 5 usually clears (disc corruption). But something at least worth trying if the only alternative is throwing the box away.
