Thumbnail lifetimes

 @Rob P

A lifetime ago, it seems, I said:-

I will check my archives when I get home, and see how far back the thumbnails go….

And the answer is January 2020, on average, with one Jan 2020 programme having already lost its thumbnail, and one December 2019 programme still keeping theirs.

There aren’t enough examples there to make any deductions as to whether some channels keep their thumbnails longer than others do, or not.

Yes, something for YouView to fix, perhaps.

But the programmes do seem to be in descending YYYYMMDD order, not just the MMDD shown, so I can deduce the years by when the months jump to a higher month name, going backwards.

And memory comes into it a bit, also.

Thanks Roy. In which case some providers seem to be better than others. I have now seen that the day is also there, so I can extrapolate that my last one in the recordings list with a picture, "When Lineker met Maradona," was on Friday 27 November 2020. 🙂

    Interesting, thanks Roy.

Further investigation shows I've actually got 2 years of thumbnails and not 1 as I originally thought, on my T2000. The oldest with an image is Tues 5th May 2020, and pretty much everything has an image up to that point. The next-oldest recording is Sun 29th March 2020 and there is no image on this nor anything before it. Recordings are almost exclusively from the "main 5" HD channels, with the occasional show from Film4, E4, ITV2.

I also have a BT DTR2110 tucked away, I will check that out later as well.

Conclusion: I record way too much stuff that I've not got around to watching

    Hi Roy,
I know it's simply because I'm a non-attender but what I'd love to read if you feel inclined and nothing better to do is a thread or post which outlines what TV and related products you now use and why.  You are clearly exceptionally interested and knowledgeable about all this stuff that it might and would be useful to others (lurkers to be converted to participants?)  like me on the lower part of the learning curve.  You learn by asking.   No probs if not. :)

Sure. Might take an hour or two, though - and that will be just to read it 😛

    Thanks Roy,
It hadn't occured to me that it would impose that long so please just ignore the request.  I perfectly understand.

Its OK, it won’t take me long, put that down to my warped sense of humour 😛

And I need an inventory anyway….

Not you at all - "it's not you - it's me".  I'm beginning to get a twitch every time I post .... to see what treasures I receive .... :)
It's my sense that you aren't a "heat seeker" for the sake of it as such and perhaps are happy to buy and update stuff when it seems wortwhile rather than just because it is new and shiney.  So I think your travel through all this would be of more wider interest and helpful than you might think.
    Thanks.

The general crapness of the thumbnails on Youview devices has been covered, a lot, but today I have no internet and I noted on my Manhattan T3-R all thumbnails attached to existing recordings are still perfectly intact; only further recordings made today are (understandably) missing theirs. (I wonder if they will be back-filled when connection is restored?)

Meanwhile Youview has lost the lot. PLEASE Youview, can you do something about caching them so they don't have to be downloaded fresh each time I turn the damned thing on?
